Y: The Last Man is the critically acclaimed and highly successful Vertigo comic series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. The story follows the epic journey of Yorick Brown and his pet monkey, Ampersand, as the only two known mammals possessing a Y chromosome left on earth as they travel through the new and chaotic world looking for answers and a long lost love.
The project has been set to be helmed by DJ Caruso (Disturbia, Eagle Eye) and for a long time, it seemed that Caruso’s go-to guy, Shia LaBeouf, would play the lead. LaBeouf was interested and pre-Transformers I would of said he’d be a pretty decent choice. The problem is that Shia’s now over-exposed and he plays the same guy in every movie he’s in.
Fortunately for us fans of the book, Shia realizes this to and has pulled himself out of the project stating that he’d be playing the same character as in Transformers, except with a pet monkey:
“You take Sam and you put a monkey on his shoulder… I don’t know if it’s that big a differential. It seems like he’s the ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation again… I’m not willing to make that movie currently, and may be too old to play the role by the time it does come around.”
Like I said, pre-Transformers I would have been okay with him in the role. I hope that we see some movement on this film and some casting choices soon. The plan is apparently to make the series into a trilogy of movies and the script is in development. Similar to another successful Vertigo comic series, Preacher, we’ve not seen much movement on that recently other than an update about the script still being worked on.
Y: The Last Man is one of my favorite comic books and once I started, I was hooked. It includes some of the best characters and character development out there and the relationships and stories depicted throughout the long journey make it a must-read for everyone.
What do you think of Shia taking himself out of the running for the role?
Y: The Last Man was planned as a 2010 release but I expect it won’t be out till 2011 at the earliest as there’s been no real movement recently.
