Based on his own classic debut feature film of 1986, writer, director, and series creator Spike Lee (Chi-Raq) is currently hard at work on his next project in the form of She’s Gotta Have It for Netflix. Taking obvious inspiration and thematic cues from his original movie of the same name, the new TV show is aiming to revisit Lee’s early work and effectively revise/re-imagine it for the 21st century.
Following the news of the passing of Bill Nunn – aka Radio Raheem from Lee’s 1989 magnum opus Do the Right Thing – returning to familiar territory from his past catalog of work might be a more timely endeavor than ever for the filmmaker to pursue. On that note, it’s now being reported that a prominent Broadway performer has been cast as one of the leads in the She’s Gotta Have It TV series.
According to Deadline, none other than Anthony Ramos of the smash hit Broadway musical production Hamilton – wherein he originated the roles of John Lauren and Philip Hamilton – has been cast in the forthcoming She’s Gotta Have It Netflix series. Ramos is set to play social media mogul and rising pop-cultural icon Mars Blackmon – who was originally portrayed by writer/director Lee in the original 1986 film – in a concerted bid for further acclaim and attention as a screen actor.
Currently, Lee is slated to direct all ten episodes of the Netflix original series, with his wife Tonya Lewis Lee serving as the show’s executive producer. Like the original film, the She’s Gotta Have It TV series will follow the exploits of a young twenty-something, Brooklyn artist named Nola Darling, who must choose between three competing male suitors – including, a well groomed model named Greer Childs, a controlling investment banker named Jamie Overstreet, and Ramos as Mars Blackmon.
Whether or not fans of Lee’s original directorial debut will be pleased with the 21st century update to what has become a monument to late 20th century independent film remains to be seen. After breaking out on Broadway on the critically acclaimed and in demand theater ticket that is Hamilton, Ramos will no doubt draw attention to his first big break on the small screen with the release of the She’s Gotta Have It TV series. As for the rest of the cast, only time will tell who else will be attracted to the upcoming Spike Lee Joint.
