Surely one of the most anticipated movies of 2009 is Guy Ritchie’s telling of the classic Arthur Conan Doyle detective character, Sherlock Holmes. It stars Robert Downey Jr. as the titular character, with supporting performances from Jude Law (as Sherlock’s faithful Dr. Watson), Mark Strong and Rachel McAdams.

So far we’ve had looks at the Sherlock Holmes movie from various different images, but no video footage to whet our appetites. However, that’s no longer the case as today we have the first trailer for Sherlock Holmes for your viewing pleasure… and let me tell you it is awesome. Check it out below:
Head over to Yahoo! Movies for the HD version.
From the look of the trailer, it appears that director Guy Ritchie has gone in both an action and a comedic direction with the classic detective character. There are many stylish elements that we can see just from that two-plus minutes of footage – in particular the slow-motion portion of a fighting sequence, which is something that may get on some people’s nerves (this stylistic nature is why some people loathe Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels).
Who knows if the stylistic choices of Ritchie will hold the film back, but pretty much everything else looks spot-on. Robert Downey Jr. is one of the best actors working today, and he looks like he’s added another fantastic performance to his resume. It’s really astounding how he is able to slip into these roles – his accent and mannerisms as Sherlock are nothing less than perfection.
Law as Dr. Watson I thought was an iffy casting choice when it was first announced, but looking at him in the trailer he seems to fit the part very well. There’s not much of McAdams and Strong to go on, but none of them look weak or out of place.
I was extremely glad to hear that this incarnation of Sherlock Holmes would include his fighting and martial arts skills that are, unbeknownst to most people, actually part of his original description when he was created well over 100 years ago. And it looks like Ritchie has put that to good use: It’s a bit more action-heavy than I would have thought (maybe that’s just a decision of the studio to get people into the theater), but it’s a new version and I think there should be a blank slate given to try out different things.
The comedic aspect seems to work very well, too. It’s very hard to do action-comedy without it just feeling like two different movies forced together (*cough* Transformers *cough*), and it looks like Ritchie has gotten the right balance here.
Here’s hoping the actual movie turns out as good as the trailer…
What is your opinion on the first trailer for Sherlock Holmes? Is it what you hoped it would be?
Sherlock Holmes is scheduled to be released on Christmas Day in the US, and on Boxing Day in the UK this year.

I’m in!
“Madam i need you to remain calm and trust me i’m a professional…beneath this pillow lies the key to my release” hilarious!!! and is it me but in that part where they announce mark strong did he or did he not look like a younger andy garcia…?
is it a parody? what is this british accent? i feel wrong!
It feels like a buddy cop movie, in the 1800’s, great! And Downey is pretty much the king of accents.
DAMN!!!!!, Racheal McAdams looks pretty freakin hot in lingerie, and the movie itself looks to be entertaining.
Looks good. i don’t mind slow mo used in moderation. Wireworks is what has out lived it’s usefulness.
a little too much action but RDJ knows what he’s doing. and, yes, rached mcadams is hot!
It sorta feels like Sherlock Holmes as directed by Michael Bay.
The slow-motion punch at 1:07 looks unbelievably silly…
Looks good. Will def go see it. Have to say google ad sucks once again though!
Oh god this just looks fantastic! I will certainly go see it. Robert Downey Jr. is a fantastic and a gifted actor. They don’t come much better. My children and myself especially loved the hammer throwing bit. We all can’t wait till Christmas!!!!
Looks pretty cool. Now where is that Avatar trailer?
It looks the shiz!
It looks like I’ll end up throwing things at the screen as was the case during Beowulf.
This is getting silly.

Hey, sorry about that bud! Forgot to add a little snippet of code that pushes the trailer down below the ad.

Oh boy, Rachel McAdams as an adventuress! She’s great and I look forward to seeing her up against (so to speak) Downey’s Holmes. It looks like the film will call upon Holmes’s stated prowess with sword, pugilism, singlestick and bartitsu (a form of ju-jitsu and mentioned in “The Adventure of the Empty House” as being what Holmes used against Moriarty at Reichenbach. It was devised by Edward William Barton-Wright, a British engineer who had spent the previous three years living in the Empire of Japan, who returned to England in 1898 and announced the formation of a “New Art of Self Defence” and named it for himself. This looks down and dirty and very entertaining, even for an old Sherlockian like myself.
Looks good but it’s NOT Sherlock Holmes. Not remotely so. Jeremy Bret is Sherlock Holmes, this is a very cool quirkey late Victorian Age heroic Detective – buddy – cop – thriller- action- dramedy- film. Just not Sherlock Holmes
i am quite pleasantly surprised by this trailer. i thought that this movie would simply be a film to pass the time, as i thought of iron man after i saw it, but this looks spectacular. unlike The Road, i think this film is cast splendidly. the whole trailer had me excited. looking forward to this one.
This definitely looks like a must-see movie. RDJ is looking like he can do no wrong now!
Sherlock Holmes:His depravity knows no bounds!
LOVE it!
As soon as I saw Rachel McAdams, that sold me.
It actually does look like it will be very entertaining, and aside from Revolver, what more would anyone expect from Guy Ritchie?(notice I didn’t even bother mentioning that movie with Madonna)
I’m soooooo totally in!!!!! The trailer was wonderful and the fact that they got RDJ to do it makes it even sweeter. I’ve always thought it was one of the best actors of his generation. Look at what he did in Chaplin… probably one of my favorites of his.
He’s very versitile… drama and comedy are definitely his strong suits and recently action has been added to the list.
Loos really cool. No way I’m missing it. But, isn’t Rachel McAdams too young for Downey? Just sayin’
They made a sequel to LXG?
(credit to Becca)
I hope this story is slanted more toward Doctor Who then Masterpiece Theatre…
looks great but what else is new it has RDJ in it
It looks good…Ive read a fair amount of Holmes and really looking forward to a different take on it…we’ve all seen the long coat and deerstalker…both RDJ and Jude Law seem to look at ease in their roles
Please inform Mr. Downey that Sherlock was a cocaine addict, not an opium addict, and he kicked the habit in Sir Arthur’s books.
They probably won’t show Holmes smoking cigarettes either, as he did in the stories.
While I think it’s cool that they’re making a sherlock holmes movie, the fact that the main character himself isn’t British makes me a little sad. I mean, this is a classic British character and America is taking him and throwing him into an action-packed movie without even his trusty brown duster. I’ll probably see it, but chances are I won’t be too happy.
Considering the number of British, Australian and New Zealander actors playing American-accented characters here, I think that this will be OK. I just think that it is fascinating casting and look forward to what Downey does with the role. I’ve already heard his various British accents in “Restoration” and “Chaplin.”
Looks very interesting….Can’t wait to see this one…
Guy Ritchie doing Sherlock Holmes ? Let’s hope it’s not another Swept Away, I assume Madonna is not in it. Sherlock Holmes doing kung-fu ? Funny. I hope is good though, but I’ll wait for some reviews first before going to the cinema.
As a teenager, I used to read Sherlock Holmes and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was one of my favorite authores. Even today, I use much of his theories of deduction in both my work and writing careers. I lived for the “resolve,” when Holmes would detail how he solved each crime. I’m friends with a police officer who is amazed at how observant I am, based on reading the Holmes series! (He’d be shocked to know that I’m not that clever all on my own!)
The trailer for the movie was great and I love Robert Downey, Jr. I will definitely be seeing the movie. However, I sincerely hope that Ritchie will resist the urge to make Sherlock Holmes a superhero. He was not. Sherlock was inspired by one of Doyles’ teachers in medical school, Dr. Joseph Bell, who was a master at observation, logic, deduction, and diagnosis. I sincerely hope that Ritchie will no aggrandize Holmes to the point of losing his simplistic charm.
not sure if this has been brought up but the nit picker i am saw an editing goof in between the 2 trailers at 1:59 mark of this trailer when the two figures are being blasted back from the explosion i noticed from the other trailer that in the other trailer there is only 1 person getting blasted back(im guessing Holmes)…. Just thought id shoot that bullet in the air and see where it came down.
Did you folks notice that too?
Overall this will be on my watch list for whenever it came out
When I heard RDJr. was signing on to play Sherlock Holmes, I was thrilled. Now that I’ve seen the trailer? I’m even more psyched. I don’t think there’s any danger of Ritchie turning Holmes into a hero, either, simply because of the actor Ritchie’s picked to play this iconic character. Downey Jr. has this snarky, bruised quality that he can’t shake, even when he’s playing a classic hero like Iron Man. That quality is what gives his roles their humor and vulnerability. No one does that combo like Downey Jr., so I have no doubts he’ll give Sherlock a makeover we’ll never forget.
