Before the first Sherlock Holmes was even released there was already talk of a sequel. Much of that talk surrounded the classic Sherlock Holmes villain, Moriarty, who was even rumored to be played by Brad Pitt (that rumor continues to rear its head every so often). Whoever the villain, we all know Sherlock Holmes 2 is inevitable and today we learn we’ll be seeing it sooner, rather than later.

Shortly after the news surfaced that Robert Downey Jr. wouldn’t be playing Cowboys & Aliens, we get word that the reason for his departure from that project was a scheduling clash with the shoot for Sherlock Holmes 2 (as fellow Screen Rant writer Rob Keyes successfully guessed at icon smile Sherlock Holmes 2 Starts Shooting This Summer ). EW has a source inside the production that says even though the project has yet to be green-lit (it’s only a matter of time, though), the studio is nonetheless fast-tracking it after the success of the first film (it’s almost at the $300 million worldwide mark at the box office on a $90 million budget).

Warner Bros. has apparently already commissioned a script from Kieran and Michele Mulroney (who both wrote and directed the 2009 comedy/drama, Paper Man), instead of using any of the three screenwriters that wrote the first Holmes installment. They are now trying to lock down the cast (which will include RDJ, and most likely the return of Jude Law and Rachel McAdams) for a June shooting start date.  Cowboys & Aliens was set to start shooting in July. I guess the classic detective won out over cowboys and aliens battling it out…

I enjoyed Guy Ritchie’s take on Sherlock Holmes (Screen Rant head honcho Vic Holterman loved it), and am looking forward to what’s to come from the franchise. It remains to be seen whether Ritchie will follow RDJ and direct the second one, but I can’t see any reason why he wouldn’t. He has proven to WB that he can deliver a Holmes movie that simultaneously entertains new audiences while still satisfying purists (yes there are Sherlock Holmes purists out there), and in my opinion Ritchie would be crazy to turn down the opportunity to direct a second installment.

Only time will tell if Moriarty – who quasi-appeared in the first film – will be the villain in the sequel. Don’t they have to use him, at least at some point?

Are you happy to see another Sherlock Holmes on the way so soon after the first? Do you think RDJ was right to leave Cowboys & Aliens for it? What direction would you like the sequel to take?

As stated, Sherlock Holmes 2 is set to start shooting this June. Presumably we’d see it hit theaters sometime in 2011.

  1. Yep.
    Very happy.
I hope these are good writers though.
I am not familiar with them.

  2. Can not wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I heard Pitt actually shot a few scenes, but they kept them for the sequel, when the studio realised what a huge hit it would be.
I hope everyone comes back, cast and director.

  3. A sequal…yes, please, the sooner, the better. Downey made the right decision. Ritchie, yes, must come back. More Watson in the next one, too, would be perfect.

  4. Very happy to hear this … was wondering when we’d get such news!

  5. I think I can wait. Only reason I didn’t walk out is because I would have just gone home and gone to bed. Worst movie of the year for me.

  6. i have always been a Sherlock Holmes fan, after all it was the first book i read when i was younger- i think all Cowboys & Aliens needed him for was the star power cause after all he does bring that to the table- but other then that he still an actor that loves to act and we dont see that anymore even if critics or the public thinks it is a bad idea [Heart and Souls,Soapdish,Home for the Holidays] just to name a few- so i think that what hes doing here is a good move, a change to the old and i think that he would know the part of sherlock [habitual cocaine user, bipolar, money problem] holmes- he was made for this

  7. awesome…its gonna be great if the cast and crew return

just loved the style and look, as well as the clever screenplay and direction, not to mention the acting

guy ritchie should make movies like this, not Revolver

  8. Two thumbs up for a sequel!!!

Please put more Rachel McAdams in the 2nd Sherlock movie, she wasn’t in the 1st one enough. She is hands down my favorite actress and one of hollywood’s best.

  9. Yes…definately excited, but not about the new writers…it could spell disaster…I just hope they follow the same formula and don’t over sensationalize it…do what makes sense for the storyline and characters…do NOT play to the audience.

As for Brad Pitt…PLEASE NO!!!! Please use a British actor…or someone like Cillian Murphy, but older.

  10. VERY excited to see that they’re moving on this so quickly. My guess would be that they’re going to release it Christmas 2011. I just don’t understand why they’re not using the same writers as the first film. They did a helluva good job and know the characters and the back story already. I’m hoping that the writers don’t screw this up. I also think that Guy Ritchie needs to do this 2nd film. He really nailed the first one and I would love for him to continue the franchise.

  11. Finally going to see it tonight. Probably see Daybrakers tonight as well. When I get out for a movie I have to make it count. :)

  12. Excited to see where they take the franchise. It was an entertaining, fun popcorn flick, but I want to see more. Also: McAdams was horribly miscast. Maybe that’s just me. She’s a fine actress, but she wasn’t right for the part.

  13. How good would Alan Rickman be as Moriarty????!!!!

  14. I look forward to the sequel of Sherlock Holmes! I’d like to see more Sherlock Holmes actually gets down and dirty solving the crime and doing the detecting. I hope they have an intriguing enough case for him to solve.

I was very impressed by the bare knuckle boxing scene when Holmes demonstrates his expertise in martial art, but was subsequently let down when he didn’t seem to be using it, especially in his combat with the giant.

I’d like to see more development in the relationship between Holmes and Irene – how Holmes struggles between the emotions stirred up by his attraction to Irene and his faith in pure rationality.

The depiction of Sherlock Holmes as a character in the first movie is fresh, rich, solid and interesting. I’d rather the whole plot in the sequel centre around exploring in depth the complexity, eccentricity and development of Sherlock Holmes as a character. In one sense the “bromance” between Holmes and Watson serves this purpose well, but I hope they use it sparingly as a highlight other than becoming a sad distraction.

  15. This is interesting news, and according to several friends of mine who've already seen it, they're definitely eager for the Holmes sequel (and no … I still haven't seen the first Sherlock Holmes yet). One friend of mine has seen the movie four times within the past three weeks, and she says it gets better with each viewing.

Now… who should play Moriarty? I'd love to see Hugh Laurie tackle the role, if his House shooting schedule would permit it.

  16. I really hope Rachel comes back… She was a very big part in making this movie successful

  17. I loved the first film! It was probably one of the better movies I saw in 2009, and I'm definitely excited for a sequel! The only problem I had with the first is that sometimes Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law tried to speak too quickly and threw away some funny lines by doing so. Hopefully they'll fix that this time around, and it'll be even better. Next time I'll know to play along with Sherlock and look for clues. It was very cool how it all came together in the end, I hope they use flashbacks and slow motion in the sequel too!

And so the shadowy figure that Rachel was working for was Moriarty??

  18. I agree. She was sexy, funny, and definitely a good actress!! That's hard to find nowadays! (Example: Megan Fox)

  19. @Twistedburton

Agree with everything you said. I loved the movie … I was hoping it wouldn't end.

  20. This movie was AWESOME…I went to see it three times. I don't think they should cast brad pitt though as Moriarty, and I really wish they keep the same writers I have a feeling that the second one is going to lose its appeal. I think there should be more of Watson though, he was under played. I like the whole bromance that was going on, along with the wittiness. Also a lot people are looking for more action, I think there was a perfect amount of action. I like how they brought out the profiler in Holmes

  21. fisrt one was great! i cant wait for the second one! irs going to be awesome!

  22. I look forward to Sherlock Holmes 2. I hope that if Moriarty is the villain, they DON'T use Brad Pitt. He is too young and good-looking. If they want a movie worthy of its subject, one that would really bring in the ducats, they should hire John Malkovick as Moriarty. There is a man who could display the menace, the evil, the intelligence that Moriarty personifies.

  24. Can't wait for the 2nd Sherlock Holmes – The cast from the first one was perfectly matched.
