What is ironic is the first script turned in, by William Goldman, was said by insiders who read it to be the greatest superhero script ever written, yet the powers that be rejected it for being TOO SERIOUS AND TOO DARK!!! Now they WANT serious and dark? Then just revive the Goldman draft, and they can still get the movie made by 2010…or 2012 if they want to get a new director.

Good news. They are churning out superheroes movies now just to make a buck, and Shazam was always cheezy, in the show or comics, at best. DC has Superman, Marvel has the Hulk. No need for this red goofball, especially if it’s any kind of comedy.

I’m on the fence here. On one hand, I *****loved***** Get Smart this past summer. Very faithful to the Tv show. The cast was great, and I could (as well as others) see Dwyane Johnson reteaming with Segal for Shazam. I don’t know if that’s who they had in mind, I’m just saying, it made sense.
It would also make sense if they went to a tip of the hat off to the ultra low budget TV Saturday show-which I’m sure was one of the first ideas (why else would they bring in Segal?)

But with WB wanting (sadly) to make Superman “darker” why am I not shocked they want “Shazam” darker?

So what’s the flip side?
I could care less about Shazam! There. I said it. Sorry.

DC/WB wants dark> Where’s Lobo? Deadman?

It’s too bad because this could have been a really great movie if they had remained true to the source material..SHAZAM is an awesome character and if Segal had been given the green light I think he would have shown Warner Bros how they should have done Superman..It would have been great to see on the big screen and to have Black Adam as the villian would have been fantastic..I am really disappointed that this fell through…Black Adam is a dark character but not Captain Marvel..He is a big boy scout…Hence the Superman comparison..Again too bad…

I’m not surprised, if this was going forward it would have been on the tail of Get Smart as Jamie has pointed to. I think TDK closed a door that was only opened a jar for Shazam.

This is certainly more news worthy than Lex Luthor not being the main villian in a Superman movie. We have been hearing that from various outlets since late 2006. Not that I don’t appreciate Latino Review, the site is fantastic, one of my favorites. Superman facing a Supervillian and Lex being pushed to ths side or not in it at all has been floating around for years.

I think you nailed it right on the head when you said what works for Batman might not work for other things. I seriously doubt that the reason TDK did so well was because it was “dark”. It was because it was EXTREMELY anticipated, both off and online, and it was…you know….AMAZING, and therefore people went back again and again (also I don’t think we can doubt that Ledger’s death had something to do with the success as well, not A LOT but some at least).

As was mentioned Iron Man did rather well, espeically considering it was a newly introduced character to the movie world, and that was a “bright light” compared to the darkness of TDK. So again, whether it was dark or not had little to nothing to do with it.
