Now, according to a new report, the actor will be rejoining Blomkamp for his new film, Chappie.
Entertainment Weekly was the first to report the casting, though Copley hinted at the news this past weekend in a Facebook post. So far, not much is known about the movie, apart from the fact that it’s a sci-fi comedy set in an “unusual setting.” (However, our own Kyle Hembree did have some interesting theories in a recent article).
The trailer for Elysium looks great, which is good news for fans of original sci-fi. For those unfamiliar with the plot of that film, here’s a synopsis:
In the year 2154, the very wealthy live on Elysium – a Stanford torus space habitat in Earth orbit – while the rest live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planet’s crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium – but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens’ luxurious lifestyle. The only one with the chance to bring equality to these worlds is 29 year-old Max Da Costa, an ordinary man in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s mayor, Secretary Jessica Delacourt and her hard-line forces.
Blomkamp is definitely one of the most innovative directors working today and he’s found a great lead actor in Copley. While we have no clue what Chappie is meant to be all about, if it comes close to matching District 9 (or what we’ve seen so far of Elysium), it’s definitely a movie to keep an eye on.
Besides his work with Blomkamp, Copley can next be seen in Spike Lee’s remake of Oldboy. Copley is also set to appear in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty reimagining, Maleficent, and the indie sci-fi film Europa Report.
Elysium hits theaters August 9th, 2013. There’s currently no release date for Chappie, but we’ll keep you apprised of any updates as they become available.
