Ever since Neill Blomkamp’s debut feature film District 9 came out and was not only a critical hit but a financial one too, people have been wondering when a sequel was going to come along. It’s not really a necessary sequel in my opinion, but I don’t think anyone who enjoyed the first one would say no to more of that quality sci-fi storytelling.
Only a couple of days ago we learned that District 9 2 (will it be called District 10?) could start shooting as early as this Fall, with Blomkamp and Peter Jackson coming back to direct and produce respectively.
There were a few things that made that seem unlikely, including Sony denying the report (studios always deny until they themselves break the news) and the fact that Blomkamp is set to do another untitled sci-fi project which he acquired funding for last year.
However, just a couple of days since the last update we have another one from District 9 star, Shartlo Copley, who revealed some interesting little pieces of info to Empire. As part of their A-Team feature (in which Copley plays ‘Howling Mad’ Murdock), Empire asked Copley about the status of the District 9 sequel and what we can expect from the story.
Copley said that both he and Blomkamp really want to do another District 9. He said that indeed Blomkamp was going to do another movie first (we assume he means that untitled sci-fi project) but, “if everything goes according to plan we’ll do the second film in about two years time.” So not quite as soon as this Fall, but at least there’s a plan in place.
Although Copley realizes it’s a cliched thing to say, he says there’s a whole universe there that can be explored. “That story can go in so many different ways… There’s a million ways you can go,” he said. He also went on to hint that it could be a prequel of some sort, or it least it wouldn’t be the typical sequel that you see:
“Neil’s actually very interested in prequels as well; he’s said that a few times. We wouldn’t do the traditional Hollywood version of the sequel which would just be 100 aliens fighting humans.”
Although I don’t want to see a cliched alien invasion film that Copley is referring to, I still would like the District 9 sequel to go in that sort of direction – i.e. the aliens coming back for full-scale revenge on the humans. It seems logical to me. Also I’d love to see Christopher (the alien who promised Copley’s character, Wikus, that he’d change him back into a human) make good on his promise.
Of course, if you’ve been following the news on the follow-up to District 9, you’ll probably remember Blomkamp talking about his thoughts on where to go from the first one. He said he wasn’t so interested in “aliens coming back and blowing things up,” but that, “a prequel might be interesting.” I’d personally prefer an imaginative sequel rather than going backwards in time to before when the first movie takes place. But I certainly wouldn’t be upset if they went that route, either.
What do you think of the details Copley has given about the District 9 sequel? Would you prefer a straight sequel (with all-out alien vs. human warfare) or is a prequel the better route to go?
