The Sharknado series has been a surprising, interesting hit for the SyFy channel, which presented its first Sharknado installment in 2013, as the movie became a huge topic of conversation on social media, which led to more and more viewers whenever SyFy would show the movie again. The now-yearly spectacle, which stars Ian Ziering and Tara Reid, enters its fourth rendition next month. But ahead of its July premiere, SyFy has been teasing whether or not Reid’s character in the film, April, will be around in this year’s installment.
Even with names like David Hasselhoff and Gary Busey already confirmed for Sharknado: The 4th Awakens, it always seemed likely that Reid would play a big part in the film despite all of the teases surrounding the fate of her character in the series. Rather than tease fans of the series anymore, SyFy released a new teaser today that confirms the fate of April Wexler for Sharknado 4.
In the teaser, SyFy reminds viewers that April’s fate has been unknown for almost a year now since Sharknado 3’s premiere. Although the video asks the question “Is April alive?” the narrator provides the answer in the teaser in a very definitive fashion. After it’s revealed that April is back, viewers are shown a training montage involving her character along with her telling someone offscreen: “Come with me if you want to live.”
With Sharknado 4’s release just over a month out, SyFy having already publicly listed the film’s cast, Reid’s confirmed return should not come as a shock. With its huge social-media presence, SyFy electing to confirm Reid’s return in this manner is understandable as the teaser looks to have been created in a way that would immediately become a trending topic.
It would be fair to claim that Reid is the most recognizable figure in the Sharknado universe – outside of the shark-infested tornadoes, of course – and it’s nice to see that she’ll be reprising her role as April in the upcoming film. It’s hard to imagine a Sharknado film without Reid at this point, but it’s understandable why SyFy would tease fans about her status, as it became a huge topic of conversation after the fact.
Still, it’s going to be interesting to see how many more Sharknado-filled summers SyFy has in mind going forward. No matter how many more films they elect to do, one would think Reid will be involved.
Sharknado: The 4th Awakens will premiere July 31st, 2016 at 8pm ET on Syfy.
