Syfy has long been known for its B-movie creature features, often produced with “mockbuster” movie studio The Asylum, like Mega Piranha, Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, and Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus. Of course, the team hit unprecedented viral success with their 2013 TV-movie Sharknado, which told the tale of what happens when sharks meet a tornado. Keeping in line with the “so bad it’s good” mentality of the original, Sharknado 2: The Second One hit television screens a year later.
Now, this summer comes the third entry to Syfy and The Asylum’s Sharknado franchise, very aptly titled Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! Like the second movie in the series, Sharknado 3 will feature celebrity cameos, many of which can be seen in the newest teaser trailer.
Syfy released the newest trailer (above), which shows the return of series stars Tara Reid and Ian Ziering as well as Cassie Scerbo, who appeared in the first film. Additionally, Sharknado 3 will feature Frankie Muniz (Malcolm in the Middle), Kathie Lee & Hoda (Today Show), magicians Penn & Teller, *NSYNC’s Chris Kirkpatrick, NASCAR drivers Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski, R&B artist Ne-Yo, plus Bo Derek and David Hasselhoff, though more cameos are expected to appear.
Chris Regina, Senior Vice President of Program Strategy at Syfy, spoke about the network’s approach to the threequel, wanting to go bigger and better while staying true to what viewers have enjoyed about the series so far:
“We wanted this third title to boldly go where no shark movie has gone before. ‘Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!’ embraces the larger-than-life irreverence that has made these movies so popular and entertaining.”
Behind the camera, director Anthony C. Ferrante and screenwriter Thunder Levin have returned for the third installment in the Sharknado series. While the first film tore up Los Angeles and the second took a bite out of the Big Apple, Sharknado 3 will hit the “Feast Coast”.
As with its previous entries, Sharknado 3 doesn’t seem to be taking itself too seriously and continues to poke fun at its own legacy with Shark Tank judge Mark Cuban taking on the role of President of the United States and featuring classic Baywatch lifeguard Hasselhoff. Certainly, those that enjoyed The Hoff’s performance in the official Kung Fury music video will likely be equally entertained by his role in Sharknado 3.
Of course, Sharknado isn’t for every movie fan. Those that didn’t watch or didn’t enjoy previous installments in the sharks-meet-tornado franchise should likely pass on Sharknado 3: On Hell No! But, for fans of the series, the upcoming movie looks to be a bigger and better entry to the trilogy that adds more action, more cameos, and, yes, more killer sharks.
Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! premieres Wednesday July 22nd @9PM on Syfy. Watch the trailer below.
