While Syfy is no stranger to B movie creature features highlighting frightening beasts like crocodiles and sharks as well as hybrid terrors like Piranhaconda and Sharktopus, the network struck gold - or at least, viral success - with their 2013 summer hit, Sharknado. So it was no surprise when Syfy announced they were working on a sequel to their runaway hit.

With a title like Sharknado 2: The Second One, original stars Ian Ziering and Tara Reid returning, and the addition of even more recognizable names, how could the sequel not live up to its predecessor? For those that have their doubts, an official teaser trailer has been released.

The trailer claims Sharknado 2 will be “bigger, bolder, even more ridiculous” than the original. Though no specific plot details are displayed in the teaser, that’s to be expected since viewers will be tuning in for the campy action that made the original film so successful. Stars Reid and Ziering are both featured in the trailer, with Ziering’s character uttering the only line of dialogue: “It’s happening again.” This soundbite no doubt succinctly sums up the entire story of the sequel.

Two of the film’s other stars, Mark McGrath (Scooby-Doo) and Vivica A. Fox (Independence Day), are shown for a brief moment in the trailer, but New York City plays a bigger leading role. Well-known backdrops such as a Manhattan street, a city subway stop, and Citi Field are all featured in the trailer, though they may be out-shined by Ziering standing on a bus and wielding a chainsaw - his weapon of choice from the original film.

Whether Sharknado 2 will live up to the social media spectacle of the original is as unpredictable as the laws of meteorology in these films, but the sequel is sure to deliver on what it promised: more sharks and more tornadoes. Hopefully, Sharknado 2 will also feature more interesting and crazy (if somewhat difficult to believe) CGI-assisted stunts such as Ziering’s Herculean final defeat of a shark from inside the beast’s stomach.

It’s difficult to believe Syfy could possibly top that scene, or the viral success of Sharknado, but in a world where sharks and tornadoes can join forces to create a violent megastorm on TV, anything is possible.
