Members of developer Eidos Montréal are starting to talk about the mysterious Shadow of the Tomb Raider multiplayer mode. While details are currently sparse, they confirmed to Xbox: The Official Magazine that it won't be competitive in nature. Instead, they're looking to create an "extended gameplay" experience for players to enjoy together.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the third adventure of Lara Croft since the 2013 reboot, which went on to spawn a new film adaptation earlier this year. While the first two titles were developed primarily by Crystal Dynamics, who is currently busy working on an Avengers game, 2018's Tomb Raider is being made by Eidos Montréal who assisted on the previous enties. The Canadian studio is best known for the modern takes on Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Thief.

"We won’t have competitive multiplayer," revealed Senior Producer Mario Chabtini in an interview with Xbox: The Official Magazine. Shadow of the Tomb Raider will instead feature "extended gameplay" that the studio will announce at a later date. Creative Director Daniel Bisson didn't go into much more detail, but he did tell people what to expect. "We've listened to the fans," said Bisson. "We're adding a new twist to it. [It's] nothing like 2013's competitive Tomb Raider [multiplayer] mode, though."

As Bisson noted, multiplayer isn't a new idea to the Tomb Raider series. A competitive mode akin to Uncharted's multiplayer was added to the reboot, but it never really found much of an audience despite being fundamentally sound. It just wasn't what fans wanted out of the series. Its sequel, 2015's Rise of the Tomb Raider, switched things up by adding a cooperative mode that had two players competing tasks and attempting to survive rough weather conditions together. It was much better received, and fits the sort of "extended gameplay" mold that Chabtini mentioned above.

Cooperative play was initially confirmed when publisher Square Enix announced that Shadow of the Tomb Raider would be receiving a season pass of DLC content. It will be comprised of seven different "Paths," which will each feature a new tomb to explore, story content, an additional outfit to wear, skill to equip, and one new weapon. The first of the monthly DLC drops will add in a cooperative mode, but nothing concrete is known as of yet.
