Men Say: No More Sex (In The City) Please!

Feb 9, 2009 by

sex-and-the-city-21To some people (mostly men) the news that a Sex and the City sequel has been green-lit will be the worst news in a long time. For others (mostly women) it’ll be the most exciting thing that they write in their diaries for 2010.

So ladies and gentlemen prepared to be…ahem…Carried away again.

So just why did it take so long for a sequel to be given the go-ahead when the original grossed $415 million worldwide?

I’m going to say the reason is money.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis were all keen to make the first film after the series ended five years ago – but Cattrall held out for script approval and a salary equal to Parker’s.

Now, it took four years to reach agreement over that so nine months seems like a walk in the park. However, what is really odd is that although the film is fast tracked for a 2010 release there isn’t even a script yet!

You have to wonder what Patrick Michael King has been doing since the first film started rolling in the Benjamin’s.

Sex and the City has permeated popular culture and I honestly believe that the show (along with Ally McBeal) helped make a lot of women a little crazy. It made their lives, work and relationships seem banal by the standards of Carrie et al, and therefore created an army of shoe-loving overly talkative women ready to discuss their own private Mr Big.

I know that sounds like a huge generalization (and it probably is) – but admit it, you know at least one woman like that! Having said that there are a few good women out there who are standing firm and refusing to fall for the single girl shenanigans.

Heck, I could be wrong – but I don’t think that I am – but the film He’s Just Not That Into You (which opened wide this weekend) is a line taken directly from an episode of the Sex and the City series. Now, that shows how important the series has become to the chick flick contingent.

More news on Sex and the City if the casting gets interesting.

  1. i hope my girlfriend doesnt force me to go see this.

  2. Speaking as a woman I’m a little annoyed at your sexism. ok yeah more than a little annoyed. Granted the world could probably do with one less badly written chick flick… but I would rather have Sex and the City which is undeniably at least well written and puts women in a position of power… than some crap shopaholic that puts women in a weak pathetic position. It would be nice to hear comments on the movie not on women being… “crazy”… k thanks.

  3. My girlfriend, a long-time SATC fan didn’t like the movie, and I felt it was bland. My old Media Criticism class showed the first and last episode… Talk about going from edgy to bland! I’m not the biggest fan but I respect shows and movies that don’t just target guys like me, who like Iron Man, etc.

  4. My girlfriend loves this show and kind of made me watch all six seasons and see the movie, and I was able to survive. As a movie lover and also writer of a blog, I consider “Sex and the City” to be at least superior to other films for women such as “He’s Just Not That Into You,” “27 Dresses,” and “Bride Wars.”
It seems that most recent films for women make them seem crazy and/or obsessed with wedding/sex/love.
“Sex and the City” falls prey to this (especially in the movie), but it is WAY better written than other chick flicks. I can only hope the same for the sequel since I already know I will have to see it when it comes out.

  5. The women that I have heard from who had seen the movie and followed the series are staunchly AGAINST another film. I used to work at HBO and it was a huge property while I was there so there is no doubt it is a strict financial move. Even the gals were so reluctant to get on board the first time, this is indeed depressing news.

  6. My wife didn’t watch the show.
I did … just a couple of epidsodes, but I did.

Then we watched the film together and it was better that we anticipated.

    Should there be another one?
    Storywise … I don’t think so.

    Will there be another one?
    Definitely.

    And @D-E-D-P-O-O-L

I think the SITC women are more than a bit psychotic and clichéd, but you’re right, at least the writers give them some power and personality that other examples of that “genre” lack severely.

  7. Remember!! ohh ally mcbeal…
