Joss Whedon Talks Veronica Mars Kickstarter and Firefly Follow Up Serenity Official Sequel Comic Announced; Joss & Zack Whedon Involved

Joss Whedon’s Firefly will always be considered one of the most beloved cult series of all time. While fans may never see another season of the show, Whedon gave them a some form of closure when he made Serenity in 2005. Serenity took place after the events of the last episode of the short-lived series; it wasn’t a huge financial success, but that hasn’t stopped die-hard fans of Firefly from wanting to see more of the space western series. Thanks to Dark Horse, the comic book publisher that created characters such as Hellboy,  fans now have the opportunity to revisit the Serenity crew.

When another cult series, Veronica Mars, successfully funded a new film through Kickstarter, it gave Firefly fans hope that the same thing could happen for their show. Sadly it has been months and still no word on any form of project involving Firefly - until now. At the 2013 New York Comic Con, all of the major and independent comic book publishers were in attendance promoting their current line of titles, as well as making a few announcements about what’s to come. Dark Horse Comics announced that they are releasing a sequel to Serenity in the form of a comic book miniseries produced by Joss Whedon.

Serenity: Leaves on the Wind will be a six issue miniseries with the potential to be turned into an ongoing series. The sequel comic will be written by Zack Whedon and will pick up where the series and film left off. The official press release sheds light on the current status of the Serenity crew, but doesn’t offer much information on where Leaves on the Wind will take them.

Malcolm Reynolds’s crew shook the ’verse to its core when they laid bare the crimes against humanity undertaken by their sinister government—the Alliance. Always outlaws, Mal, a very pregnant Zoe, new pilot River Tam, and the other surviving crew members are in greater danger than ever, and everyone’s asking the same question . . .

firefly grounded whedon snub Serenity Official Sequel Comic Announced; Joss & Zack Whedon Involved

This wont be the first time that a Whedonverse property has been turned into a comic series. Whedon’s first successful series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer may have ended after seven seasons, but the stories continue through an ongoing series also published by Dark Horse. Zack Whedon has also been working for Dark Horse for the last few years and has written stories based on other works by Joss, including Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog. He has also successfully adapted Serenity before with his graphic novel, The Shepard’s Tale.

I recently watched Firefly and Serenity for the first time and really enjoyed Whedon’s pre-Avengers work. Now that Whedon has shifted his focus over to his Marvel franchise, it is good to know that he will still be producing the series and leaving the writing to his very capable brother Zack. No true fan would say no to more adventures of Mal and the Serenity crew, so hopefully Zack Whedon’s miniseries will be a success and turn into an ongoing series. While we may never have the opportunity to see Nathan Fillion play Mal Reynolds on television or film again, it is good to know that his character will live on through another medium.

  1. Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • In other words, a movie sequel is not going to be made, so they’ve settled on a comic.

Disappointing, as I had alway hoped Josh would make a sequel to Serenity, especially now, with his newfound clout, connections, and finances.

      • Comic Sequel = pointless cash grab. The actors and their portrayal make the characters. Continuing the story with drawings is pointless.

      • He already addressed the topic of a sequel. He’d love to make one, but he’s too busy with Marvel, and the actors are busy too (e.g. Nathan Fillion with Castle).

He said in a few years when he’s done with Marvel and Nathan is done with Castle he might revisit the idea.

      • I don’t know what you would expect from that movie since they killed off wash and Shepherd Book. Also Nathan Fillian and Zoe look really old and not quite as lean as he used to be. I suppose a spin-off in the firefly universe would be cool. Like if they followed somebody else around.

  2. Shiny :)

  3. Did that say “pregnant Zoe”?

    Wash lives!

    • It was revealed that Zoe was pregnant at the end of the “Float-Out” one-shot comic, which dealt with a few pilots reminiscing about their time with Wash before he was on Serenity. It’s a cute little comic, and I believe considered canonical.

  4. I read, ‘Sequel Announced’ and spat my coffee out in excitement, but then saw the word ‘comic’… which is fine, I love comic books but when they’re based off TV shows they’re never the same. Looking forward to it though.

  5. GROOVY…

  6. “Leaf on the wind” Oh god the feels are rushing back to me again. Wash *sniff*

  7. yes please

  8. Shes a phattassed hogbeeotch damm.

  9. totally gai

  10. Awesome. Maybe if this could lead to something more in the future… I can always hope!

  11. Will they try to milk the series or make comic with an ending. Because if it the first one “f*ck you”, if the latter “thanks”.

  12. for a moment i had a glimmer of hope in my eyes…..if i was a reavers Al you’d be the first one i eat

    • Please don’t eat me reaver. A ‘Serenity’ sequel comic is better than nothing at all.

  13. Joss,
I am a Browncoat who tends to believe and hope as unreasonably as you always wanted us to. I know that you’re doing your other, whatever, right now, but I know, as do all Browncoats, that the second (third?) coming of Firefly will eventually be nigh.
I know that you’re adding to the corpus in the comic world, and that’s awesome: more than awesome. I know that one of the problems, even though we die-hards don’t want to acknowledge it, is that the actors we love have altered physically with time and may not be able to physically encompass the near sequel after which we lust. Comics are great for cryogenic preservation, but wouldn’t breathing life into those comics with interpolated rotoscoping a la “A Scanner Darkly” and “Waking Life” be even better?
Again, take your time. As long as none of our principles succumb to untimely Whedon-plot-death; we should be fine. And you know that with the Kickstarter and other ways of routing money, that we will create if they can’t accept the amount of money we’re willing to throw at them, we Browncoats will always be waiting in the wings, recruiting in the black, dark alleys, biding our time.
Just in case it hadn’t occurred to anyone…interpolated rotoscoping…for your consideration.
Willing to sleep, for a little while,
    A Browncoat
