I have long stated that Aliens is my favorite movie of all time. My criteria for determining that is that I can watch the bloody thing over and over and over again and NEVER get tired of it.
I just watched Serenity for the second time, and after having watched it, I went back and revised my 4 1/2 star rating to a solid . Why? As a sci-fi/action flick, the thing is almost without fault. I’ve seen all the episodes of Firefly, but even if I hadn’t, I think the movie would still have knocked my out of my seat.
Like Aliens, Serenity has a killer script and moves along with a tight pace that never leaves you bored and looking at your watch. Both films have a very specific personality that just fits, and characters that are well fleshed out, real and that you come to care about within the scope of the film.
Having watched Slither today, a movie that I really wanted to like (and did, I just didn’t love it), it really put things into perspective when watching Serenity again. No periods that seemed like filler or sequences that just seemed to slow down the film.
If you haven’t seen Serenity yet (I assume you MUST have seen Aliens by now, if not, shame on you), don’t bother renting it, just go out and buy the damned thing.

Well put .. I was predisposed to like “Serenity” as a devoted Whedonite, but ended up liking it much more than even I expected .. a sci-fi masterpiece indeed

I concur with you whole-heartedly on your assessment of “Serenity”, an absolutely incredible movie.
I guess I have missed the posts with your feelings on “Aliens”. Anyone entering my house would have me pegged (and rightly so) as a Star Wars fan…and probably no other film series has more effected my imagination. However, when people ask me what my all time favorite film is, I proudly point them to the simple yet elegent black framed poster above the TV with words “There are some places in the universe you don’t go alone.” at the top. It’s been 20 years now (geez, am I getting that old?) and it still reigns.

You know, that’s funny… anyone who knows me pegs me as a HUGE Star Trek fan, but there’s just something about “Aliens” that I find just utterly and completely satisfying.

I’ll have to rent this soon, you’ve piqued my interest. The way you describe it makes me think of “Blade Runner”. Sort of an under the radar classic which I seem to be able to watch over and over again. Any advice regarding letting my 10 year old son watch with me(Serenity)?
Personally (and this is speaking as someone who doesn’t have kids), I think I’d recommend watching it yourself first before letting a 10 year old watch it. It is rated PG-13 and there are a couple of scenes that I don’t think I’d have a 10 year old see.
If you’re renting, you may want to rent the “Firefly” series first. I don’t think you NEED to see the series to enjoy the movie, but I think the experience is enhanced even more if you have.

Yeah, it has a few pretty intense scenes. Mostly implied, but still… you miht want to check it out first.
