Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence have starred in successful films together - American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook - though both were under the guidance of eccentric filmmaker David O. Russell. For Serena, "B. Coop" and "J. Law" are getting a change in director - working under Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier (Things We Lost in the Fire, Brothers) - and are reaching even further back in time, to the period of the Depression-era south, for a drama about a power couple named the Pembertons (Coop/Law) whose timber empire is threatened by marital secrets.

The trailer above doesn't directly spell out all of the twists and turns in author Ron Rash's novel (adapted to the screen by K-19: The Widowmaker screenwriter, Chris Kyle); rather, the trailer teases a bit of the mystery and the darker truths beneath the Pembertons' marriage, showing imagery that could admittedly be considered spoilers - except for the fact that, out of context, the footage doesn't really reveal all that much.

Serena Movie Poster (2014) Cooper and Lawrence

-

Serena has a solid supporting cast that includes Rhys Ifans (Amazing Spider-Man), Sam Reid (Belle), Sean Harris (that Prometheus "geologist"), Charity Wakefield (The Raven), Ana Ularu (Outbound) and Toby Jones (Captain America 2). Of course, the real selling point will be people turning out to see Coop-Law smolder in other romance - this time to the grandiose backdrop of a period piece. Whether or not that set up will result in the same success as the onscreen couple's work with Russell remains to be seen (pun).

Serena will be in theaters on October 24th.
