Despite Suburgatory's third season not doing very well, or perhaps in spite of it, ABC greenlit a new comedy pilot from Suburgatory creator Emily Kapnek about a month ago. With the pickup, Selfie, along with Damaged Goods from Awkward creator Lauren Iungerich, joined the network's list of 11 comedy pilots awaiting a series order in May.

Now the next step is finally in place, as Kapnek's thing for redheads (see Suburgatory's Jane Levy and the animated series As Told by Ginger) has reared its head yet again. Karen Gillan - who last graced our TV screens on Adult Swim's NTSF:SD:SUV and as Doctor Who's companion Amy Pond - has signed on to star as the female lead in a new show called Selfie.

Inspired by the Broadway musical My Fair Lady, Gillan will play Eliza Dooley, a shallow twenty-something who's obsessed with being popular, until it happens for all the wrong reasons. A video of her humiliating breakup is posted on the internet, instantly going viral and catapulting her into social media stardom. She's then left to try and pick up the pieces by enlisting the help of a marketing expert to repair her tarnished image.

The original My Fair Lady stage show in the 1950s relied heavily on the chemistry between actors Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews, who played a Cockney flower girl taking speech lessons from a phoneticist to pass as a well-born lady. Seemingly, the same idea should apply here with the pilot's success dependent on getting the right leading man. There's even talk of Selfie becoming a successor to Suburgatory, should that series not be renewed, so finding the right actor to star opposite Gillan is essential to its chances for a series order.

It was thought that Gillan would continue acting on the big screen, since her next projects are the highly anticipated Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, which released its first trailer today, and horror film Oculus. This latest news, however, brings her right back to TV where she can, assumedly, raise her profile stateside while still pursuing film roles.

Are you sad to see Gillan back on the small screen instead of booking film roles? Or will you be happy to catch her on TV every week should the show get a series order? Let us know in the comments.
