Go Speedracer Go!

FlameStrike says:

Personally, the reason I think this Trek is going to suck is because of the similarities to Transformers, which I absolutely HATED. The writers of Trek are the same writers that screwed Transformers up so completely. These writers have effectively said the exact same things about Trek that they said about Transformers. They are fans of the series, they want to stay true to the source material, they want to treat it with respect, the fans will love it, etc….

Considering how they failed, at least from this fan’s perspective, so miserably at achieving their stated goals for Transformers, and have said that the movie was the one they envisioned when they wrote the script, I can’t say I have high hopes for Star Trek.

As for Abrams, I don’t know enough about what he’s done to date to say anything about his track record so far, but he’s working with a script that can’t be updated during production as a result of the writers strike, a script produced by writers, and I use that term loosely, who haven’t impressed me with their abilities even when they could update the script during production. Add to this, the fact they they’re talking about redesigning, not just updating the look of, the iconic NCC-1701 Enterprise and I have some serious concerns about how respectful they’re actually being.

Personally, I could accept the idea of a reboot to Star Trek, if it was done right. Unfortunately, unlike the idea from JMS and Bryce Zabel, this doesn’t capture my imagination in a positive way.

Vic says:

Yup, I’m not opposed to a reboot IF they do some miraculous job on the film. I keep hoping beyond hope that they don’t screw it up…

steve adams says:

Yea I think your totally right on Flamestrike!

The film will have some awesome effects but betray the core history of Star Trek.

Jim Carey says:

Flamestrike, Star Trek 0 is brought to us by the makers of Transformers? In space, no one can hear you boo!

toggz says:

Nitpicking but the eye wasn´t japanese ;P

FlameStrike says:

Carey, I didn’t “boo” during Transformers. I tried to burrow through my seat and into the floor so no one would see me there.

Vic says:

Gah! Was “The Eye” Korean??

Vic

Jim Carey says:

Flamestrike, I remember burrowing at Transformers. I chaperoned kids from a church group. When Sam’s parents asked if he had been m—, all the boys turned to the adults to ask, “What does m– mean?” You could hear “homina homina” all around.

Luckily the boy next to me (9 or 10 years old) had already asked tons of questions, so I said, “Shh, you’re gonna miss something.”

This offensive moment is deliberated over in editing and early screenings. Leaving it in a movie that would attract a lot of kids (PG-13 assumed to be about action scenes), speaks of an intent to manipulate. That was even more offensive than the lameness of the story and effects.

B. Green says:

Nice post. I am stoked about seeing The Eye and Untraceable. I’m not so sure about Rambo.

Screen Rant says:

I was looking forward to “Rambo” more prior to learning that there will be no pre-release screenings for critics. That is NOT a good sign.

Regarding “The Eye”, I just saw the Asian version and while it was pretty low key I liked it. No doubt the remake will not have the same tone and will instead go for bashing us over the head.

great list vic! i printed out this listed and tacked it to my office wall. also, semi-pro isn’t about volleyball, its about basketball (the ABA to be exact, just FYI.)

Dan says:

QUOTE: “Nice post. I am stoked about seeing The Eye and Untraceable.”

Yes, “UNTRACEABLE” is very very good. Very intense and suspenseful. They seem to have atleast tried to make the film technically authentic too. Diane Lane was superb.

paul-franco says:

X FILES 2 is the best movie 2008!!
I think it will be great

steve adams says:

Paul-Franco, if your still out there, you seem like a fan of the show. Ques? Do you think they should tackle the Conspiracy issue or do a stand alone story?

KEL says:

Conspiracy issue. That sort of thing needs to be adressed.

steve adams says:

Yea KEL, I think alot of the townsfolk are scared of the conpspiracy issue.

Were living in a time where (truth is becoming the enemy of the state)and were told not to go there….
It sickens me.

Its funny though how alot of townfolk hated the way the conspiracy issue was never resolved yet tune into Lost every week like junkies.

KEL says:

You’re damn right,Steve!

Now ‘days, the truth IS the enemy!! We are no longer a free country any more!

Jim Carey says:

Steve, Kel.

We’re posting messages about monsters, space ships, uniforms and celebrities.

Not free?

steve adams says:

Hey Jim, I don’t want to drag this review post down this road.

Don’t know if you’re still reading this thread, Vic, but I just saw the trailer for “The Happening”, and from what I’ve seen it looks like the storyline we both feared has been left in-tact (plants emitting a self-defense that causes humans to destroy themselves).

steve adams says:

Wow Jerseycajun, you would think the plantlife would have done this along time ago if they could.

This is the lamest idea Mcknight Shamalen has come up with since “the village”.
^
What’s happened to this guy.

First of all this is a total rip-off of the 60’s film “The day of the Trifeds”.
^
Did McKnight think that we wouldn’t see thru his “inconvienant truth rip-off”. Wow. Whata dork.
^
Thanks for the warning Jerseycajun.

ASIDE from the “Earth rebels against humans” angle, I actually thought the trailer was very creepy and effective. Just hadn’t had a chance to post it up here yet.

the old man says:

I think Shyamalan deserves a chance. I liked “Unbreakable” or was it because it was a Bruce Willis vehicle?? Anyway, terrestrial dangers are much more likely than an “Andromeda Strain”. I admit I probably won’t see the movie but the earth is more hostile than we give it credit for. It’s only because man has built up so many defences against nature. If you want some believable examples there are common fruits in our diet that while the fruit is harmless the seeds arn’t. What about the potato harvest the FDA had to have destroyed a few years back because the particular variety was dangerously allergenic? Of course the bean sprout growing out of the kids nostril is still a memorable old tale…Ha..ha When you think about it that tale was brobably more influential than The Triffids.

Just my two cents…

Dragonball isn’t coming out till April 2009. thought you might want to know that.
