It’s Screen Rant’s 7th Birthday!

Nov 13, 2010 by

Vic Holtreman of Screen RantWow.

It’s hard to believe that Screen Rant has been online seven (7!!) years. I started this site back in November 2003 – and I had no idea what I was doing… I was just a movie and Sci Fi fan and with this whole internet thing that seemed to be up and coming, I thought it might be cool to set up one of those new websites called a “weblog.” I figured it might be fun to set up a place where I could talk about movies and TV, both the good and the bad, but I never thought anyone would read it outside a couple of friends of mine.

One of the very first posts on the site was Sandy Collora’s short fan film Batman: Dead End. There were articles about Battlestar Galactica, how annoying people who talked in movie theaters were and the odd movie review here and there.

Back then the site was VERY heavy on the “Rant” side of things and it was just me and a my friend Brian Rentschler venting a couple of times a week. Things puttered along for a while just for fun, but in summer 2008 I thought maybe Screen Rant could “be somebody.” Kofi Outlaw came on board as a part time writer (he’s now our senior editor) and then a few months later I noticed a very well-spoken commenter on the site who I thought might be a good writer. Turns out I was right, and his name is Rob Keyes (now also an editor).

As time went on we brought more and more writers on board – some have come and gone, but we continued to do our best to bring readers news about the sorts of movies we loved with a dose of opinion. It’s been a LOT of work along with some luck and I want to thank our intrepid crew for the great job they do day in and day out. Oh, and a year ago we branched out with what’s turning into one of the go-to video game news sites on the web: GameRant.com.

The site has been through a lot changes over the past seven years, and will continue to change as we grow and evolve. Since I’m sure none of you know what the site looked like when it was born, I thought you might get a kick out of this:

We’ve come a long way, baby. :)

We have more changes coming very soon in an effort to make Screen Rant even better.

There have been some ups and downs but overall it’s been a great ride and has given me the chance to meet other really cool movie bloggers and industry people – and to connect with movie fans like yourselves.

If you’re a regular visitor I want to thank you for coming back again and again. If you’re a first time reader, kick off your shoes, relax, and have a look around… join in on the conversation and hang out. I consider a lot of you folks family, so again, thanks for sticking with us. And if you haven’t done so yet, don’t forget to join the Screen Rant Facebook page!

  1. Happy Birthday Screen Rant!
If I’m not mistaken, Game Rant has a birthday coming up too ;)

  2. good job everyone , appreciate all the work you guys have done to keep this awesome site running . Happy Birthday !

  3. Happy birthday ScreenRant!
Like Daniel, I have undergone a few “distractions” over the last five years I have been a regular visitor of the site, and on more than one occasion ScreenRant has made it easier to cope by having a place to go to where I feel involved. This is the only site that comes to mind where style and substance are consistantly on display, and those who post here respect the rules of the road. In this way Screenrant (in my opinion) defies convention.
Those who visit here may not aleays agree with each other’s views, but I’m sure one thing we CAN all agree upon is the fact that due to the efforts and fine work of the folks who write for and manage the site, we all feel, in some small way, that Screenrant belongs to all of us, and we are so much better off having a place to go that feels like Home.

Thanks for all the hard work Vic, and for welcoming us into your most excellent house!

    Peace, Michael

  4. Happy Birthday Screenrant

my first brush with screenrant was an external link from imdb on the TDK’s casting rumors of joker news. since then i have been HOOKED on this site, mostly just reading stuff. just created an account last year so i can join u guys

    Love you guys

  5. Happy Birthday Screen Rant! I’ve been a regular reader (though the last couple of months I’ve been off from commenting, nothing personal, just my bad :) )for over 2 and a half years now. I remember one of the very first articles (if not THE first) I read was the Iron Man review, which Vic gave 4.5 out of 5 (I remember that!). After then… well I’m still here ‘hanging out’ in the site every time I can (ergo, daily), and I’ll be doing that for much more time.

You want a site that gives you movie (and tv) news? Go anywhere on the web. You want a site that besides giving news, encourages discussion and comments in the best way there is? You pal, shou… no, MUST head to Screen Rant. :)

So, again congrats not only to the site but to anyone who has been a part of it during these 7 years. That’s the lucky number!!

  6. Happy Birthday Screenrant,

Congtratulations to Vic and the Crew for providing us with such a great site.
    Good work guys :)

  7. Happy Birthday Screen Rant!

Thank you for the news and entertainment. I enjoy all the articles and comments :-)

I’m an expat living in Germany and I would be lost without you folks.

    Thanks again.

  8. I’m late chiming in on this: Happy Birthday! You’re almost a man now. :)

I remember Vic posting a link here on the comicbookboards Iron Man forum. I came over and I like to think I have been here since day one. Hell I laugh at all those kids who post “First” on here when I was “First Day”. I’ve been in and out over the years(I relocated this year and did without Internet for awhile) but this is one of the first places I still check everyday. This is only one of two forums I still participate in and the only movie blog/site I regularly visit. In fact, Vic gave me a whole new appreciation for the silver screen again. I do watch movies under a more critical scope nowadays and one day, ONE DAY, it will translate into me being a decent filmaker as well.

Vic, we owe you a beer! Cheers and here’s to 7 more!

  9. Happy bday SR!

Yo’ Vic! if there are changes coming, might I suggest something?

For some reason, ScreenRant REALLY slows down my computer and sometimes it freezes for 5-10 minutes. (Although that doesn’t stop me from hanging out here lol).
I don’t know if it’s just my crappy computer, but if it’s possible, could you make the site…slicker, I guess? Maybe it’s all the info it has to process etc whatever.

    Happy Birthday again!

    • Steve,

That’s a new one to me. I know that in general the longer I have Firefox open the more it slows down by computer, but I’ve never noticed this site specifically doing that.

But so you know, I have my programmer working on re-coding the site from the ground up at this very moment. :)

      Vic

      • @ Vic;

Cheers Vic :) It must just be me I guess lol. Look forward to seeing what you have in store (as long as it isn’t as bad as those dreadful recent IMDB changes! But I have faith in you guys!).

  10. Happy Birthday SR…. I have been coming to this site for awhile now (thanks to one of the writers I met at the Smallville Panel). This site is really done really well. Thanks Vic and crew for all the news in the media world!

  12. Happy Birthday Screenrant, Happy Birthday Screnrant, Please do some more reviews, Happy Birthday Screenrant! ♫♪

    • Olu,

We’re trying, bud. We post up a lot more reviews than we used to. :)

      Vic

  13. Congratulations and thanks, Vic and everybody involved. I was just introduced to ScreenRant this year and love it. I was in a discussion of Doctor Who that blew me away. Gotta go back and digest everything – people were unbelievably knowledgeable and thoughtful. It was a few weeks ago so I’m hoping my old links will work.

Do you have archives? Since I just discovered you, I’d love to look up some past discussions. Do you have things indexed by movie, TV show, actors, etc? That might be way too much to ask but – just askin’!

Whether or not you have the above, I love my newsletters – keep it comin’! Wishing you many more years.

  14. Happy Birthday screenrant! and congratulations Vic and friends

I have been an everyday reader and a semi regular commenter for 3 and a bit years now and I would like to join many others in thanking you guys for such a fun, honest and impressive site.
You make the first hour at work the least productive and most fun of the day, so once again thank you and I wish you many more years of ranting

  15. Happy Birthday Rant! I have been a regular at this website for nearly two years and it’s been a great source of information and I’m glad to have made my opinions to movies and to hear other’s opinions who (usually) have better opinions. Plus in my future I plan on staying on this website to here fan opinions so I know what the people want in a film so I know what I should put into a film, for it’s my dream to become a director and make my name out there.

Happy Birthday Screenrant. And thank you for being here for years to come. :)

    • That last art didn’t come out right.

And thank you for being here when people need information. And may you be here for years to come.

      That’s better.

Actually there maybe a couple grammical

  18. Happy Belated B day!

  19. @Vic and ScreenRant

Sorry for being late with this but i figured that with the 3D craze that technology may one day prolong your life to 100 more years (don’t ask how is that possible) but the important part is that we’ll get screenrant for 100 more years. Long live ScreenRant!!!

  20. All the best to Vic and Kofi and Rob and all the others who make this site the best place to hang out and shoot the breeze in a manner befitting of intelligent adults..Have been frequenting the site since my days in Saudi Arabia in 2004-2005 but never commented until 2007..and really enjoy hanging out with all the regulars and just sharing ideas and opinions on our favorite movies, tv shows etc..thanks for making this possible Vic

  21. I have my pain stick ready for you to go through the Ascension Chamber, humaaan!! I hope you have selected the right poetry to quote while you writhe in agony!!

While that sounds like a lot of fun Kahless (NOT!), it’s the sites birthday, not Vic’s.

    Whatever!!

    :-)

    Happy Birthday, ScreenRant.

  22. Happy Birthday screenrant! and congrats Vic and Writer friends.

I am a regular reader of SR and not so frequent commenter. I came to know SR thru IMDb….thanks.

Would love to see more articles on indie films as well.

Keep up the great work…this is the only site which makes me log in to the internet…..interesting articles/commenters/perspectives and a wonderful platform to share. :)

  23. Happy Birthday everybody! Thank you for all you do for us!
