It’s Screen Rant’s 10th Anniversary!

10th anniversary sr 2013 Its Screen Rants 10th Anniversary!

It was 10 long years ago that I launched a little movie and TV website just for fun, and at the time I never thought in my wildest dreams that would reach as many people as we do today. When I started the site I knew next to nothing about web design, evidenced by the hideous look of version 1.0:

SR 2003a Its Screen Rants 10th Anniversary!

Behold, the birth of Screen Rant!

Screen Rant was born back in November 2003 – and I had no experience with web design or anything else internet-related… I was just a movie as well as sci-fi fan and interested in this whole internet thing that seemed to be up and coming, and I thought it might be cool to set up one of those new websites called a “weblog.” Figured it might be fun to establish a place where I could talk about movies and TV, both the good and the bad, but I never thought anyone would read it beyond a couple of friends. It was more of a sandbox to play around with web design while writing about something I love.

Some of the earliest articles on the site were about Sci-Fi’s (that’s right, NOT “SyFy”) Battlestar Galactica, and the (at the time) brand new Lord of the Rings films. You probably don’t even remember that at one point both McG and Michael Bay were rumored to direct what became Bryan Singer’s version of Superman. simple smile Its Screen Rants 10th Anniversary!

Awesome redesign, 2004

Back then the site was heavy on the “Rant” side of things and it was just me and my friend Brian Rentschler venting a couple of times a week. Things puttered along for a while as a personal blog just for fun, but over time people started leaving comments on the site and conversations began to blossom around whatever article we’d written. So in summer 2008 I thought maybe Screen Rant could “be somebody.”

SR 2005 Its Screen Rants 10th Anniversary!

Kofi Outlaw came on board as a part time writer (he’s now Screen Rant Editor-in-Chief) and then a few months later I noticed a very well-spoken commenter on the site who I thought might be a good contributor. Turns out I was right, and his name is Rob Keyes (now also a Senior Editor and in charge of PR for the site).

SR 2007 Its Screen Rants 10th Anniversary!

Screen Rant in 2007

One of the early things that served as a “boost” for the site was when someone happened to email me photos of the desert set in the first Iron Man film – no one else had those and it not only brought us some early notoriety, it also put us on Paramount’s radar screen. 😛 We’ve had a number of articles written that have become the go-to source for movie info over the years (articles like our Inception Ending Explained), which has been read by over 3 million people.

SR 2009 Its Screen Rants 10th Anniversary!

2009, ahead of its time!

As time went on we brought more and more writers on board, including our current heavy-hitters, Contributing Editor Sandy Schaefer, one of our two token girl writers (I kid, I kid – she is an amazing contributor) Hannah Shaw-Williams, our wacky TV Editor Anthony Ocasio, Managing Editor and SR Underground Podcast Producer Ben Kendrick, and Editor Ben Moore, who keeps the night and weekend fires burning. We left behind the personal blog vibe for more of a magazine format, and it’s worked out well.

Many writers have come and gone, and I no longer personally write for the site, but we continue to do our best to bring readers news about the sorts of movies we love – with a dose of editorial opinion. It’s been a LOT of work, along with some luck, and I want to thank our intrepid crew for the great job they do day in and day out.

SR 2010 Its Screen Rants 10th Anniversary!

2010, a bit of a step backwards

There have been some ups and downs, stresses and craziness. There have been growing pains, both behind the scenes, and in our very lively comment section. Some of you have been with us for a VERY long time, and wish for “the old days,” but with popularity comes all the crazy people, and we now have about 1,000 new comments per day. Still, we do what we can to keep the conversation from getting mean and nasty (which isn’t easy, let me tell you!).

Overall it’s been a great ride and has given me the chance to meet and become friends with other really cool movie bloggers and industry people, work with what I consider to be the greatest team in the movie blogosphere, and to connect with movie fans like yourselves.

SR 2011 Its Screen Rants 10th Anniversary!

Screen Rant: 2011

So today we’re visited almost 10 million times every month – and we’re still working hard at trying to bring you the latest and best information on the movies and TV you enjoy – along with a bit of fun here and there.

We are all very grateful to you, our readers.

SR 2012 Its Screen Rants 10th Anniversary!

Screen Rant in 2013

I have far, far too many people to thank, and I don’t want this to come across like a Oscar acceptance speech – outside of the folks I’ve already mentioned above I have to thank my wife Kathleen, for letting me keep this crazy thing going and believing it would amount to something some day, my sister Isabel, with whom I forged a love of all things sci-fi, my developer, Michael, who squeezes in design time wherever he can, and my fellow movie bloggers who’ve been there for support over the years – you know who you are. simple smile Its Screen Rants 10th Anniversary!

If you’re a regular visitor I want to thank you for coming back again and again. If you’re a first time reader, kick off your shoes, relax, and have a look around… join in on the conversation and hang out.

I consider a lot of you folks friends, so again, thanks for sticking with us.

  1. GRATS VIC and all who made this possible!

  2. Happy Anniversary Screenrant! I’ve been checking in here since 2007 and still do… everyday. Keep up the great work gang!

  3. Well done on such a great website and your podcasts has made me snort more liquid through my nose than is medically recommended.

  4. Congrats Vic and team Screen Rant! I remember Vic and I posting movie and TV news on an Iron Man fan message board, and one day he said he was launching a movie blog. We all said it would be great, and I’ve been reading since day 1!

    • My introduction to the site was through the Iron Man fansite Advanced Iron (at least that’s what it was called at the time). I remember you from there, Heath.

I’m 26 now…I guess I started looking at this site in High School….how times flies.

  5. Happy anniversary!

  6. Have an awesome 10 more years to come, folks. :)

  7. Happy anniversary! Now get rid of this terrible new huge layout and go back to the 2013 one pictured above.

  8. Happy Birthday Screenrant!!! Ive been visiting this site daily since around 2008 and love it! This site is the only movie news site in my favorites. I love the news that you guys bring and the “small” community feel that it still has. What I mean is we don’t have comment sections that get wildly out of control and I see the same commenters all the time which is nice.

  9. Love the (shudder) after the Garfield Review 😉 So happy for you and this is still my go-to site for Entertainment News

  10. Happy Anniversary!

  11. Congrats! Keep up the great work!

  12. Congratulations! To ten more years!

  13. Congrats on the 10th anniversary!

Stumbled upon this site almost 2 years ago and the movie/tv news just keeps getting better and better. Love the widespread articles (i.e Arrow, LoK) and much more. This is actually my first time commenting, dont ask me why.

But keep the great and informative articles coming in, and to many more years!

  14. Aye. A warm congratulations to all at Screen Rant. Cannot for the life of me remember how I stumbled upon this site (alas, can barely remember what I did 5 minutes ago), but have been visiting daily ever since (about 3 years now). The content is always well presented, well written and the faces on the comments now familiar and comfortable (except for recently on some topics. Like a birthday party full of strangers, appropriately).

So here is to another 10 years of enjoyable excellence in whatever form it comes in. Who knows what the future holds. We might all be robots or something.

    • I stumbled upon ScreenRant when I looked for news about The Avengers. Once I heard the Avengers podcast I was permanently hooked to ScreenRant.:D

      • Hahaha That’s how I stumbled upon it a few years ago!

  15. I’ve been reading this website everyday since 2007. I found it while looking up news for comic book movies. This is the best place on the Web for movie news. I also love the podcast, I listen to it every week. I just wish vic would write an article every once in awhile lol 😉

  16. congrats to you all. here’s hoping for at least 10 more

  17. I can’t remember when and how I came across this site(probably an ex boyfriend) but it is my daily read. Often times the movie reviews and ratings are exactly in one with my thinking which prompts me to be selective on movies I go to see( honestly i see what feels good to me, but I weigh the sites opinion). I love getting the scoop ahead of my friends and as a writer hoping to get screenplays made, novels published, etc, I just love the insights and knowledge the site proves. Thanks.

  18. Great job vic and the team leading this blog and keeping us in the loop with hollywood and movie industry. To another 10

  20. Congrats, and thanks to everyone involved for creating and maintaining such a great site. I am a relative newcomer, but I visit everyday and consider ScreenRant to be the most user-friendly, even-handed site of its kind. A great place for reputable updates and well-thought-out reviews.

Glad to be a part of the community here. :)

  21. Its been a privelege growing up with this site. I was in 9th standard(or Grade in Amrika ;-)) when I started following it and now I have completed my engg and have been working hard, but Screenrant is one stop place for my news for movies!! And I especially love ur lists.. bring more of those :)

  22. Happy Anniversary Screenrant!
I stumble upon this website actually with the “Inception” article and I thought it was a smart way to analyze this Movie. I had decided to read other articles and had realised at the Time that the Writers were talented, the Articles well written and the Small community left very interesting comments… I quickly fell in Love with this Website! and guess what? Everytime I clicked that Internet Explorer page, It is that pops up. Yes I love this Website.
I love Movies! Movies are my Life and Let me Say that SCREENRANT saved my Life in ways I cannot explain…
I think SCREENRANT respects Its SCREENRANTERS and that is why I stay Faithful to this Site.
I do not comment too Often, However When I do, It is because The Article is a Sensitive One or if I do not Respectfully agree with an Opinion but I Religiously visit and read almost Every Article Everyday! lol
    Congratulation to Vic!
    and Once Again:
    Happy Anniversary Screenrant! :)

  23. congrats on being original and not bending to trends, big up the writers/editors

wow i remember visiting the site in the 2005 screengrab

  24. Congratualations ScreenRant.

Vic, I miss your contributions. The folks working here are great but I think you had a unique perspective and view of the intersection of geek-culture and society. Maybe some guest appearances or a Vic 2.0?

    • “Congratualations” to me as well for my creative spelling.

  25. Happy anniversary! Reading this made me so damn emotional, I’ve been following you for the majority of these 10 years <3333 Keep being this honest, awesome, smart and hilarious 😉

  26. Congratulations! Great site.

I remember finding this site when looking for some movie news, and the came across it again later when searching for some other movie news, and then looked into it some more and realized that this is just the site I’m looking for, made by people that seem like they’re fans of films as well and not just trying to make promo puff pieces.

Now you’re on my RSS feed that I check every day. Keep it up.

  27. Congratulations ScreenRant, for hitting a new landmark! Before you know, it’ll be 50 Years…

  28. Congratulations! Best movie website out there bar none

  29. Happy Birthday! I come onto to this site at least once a day. Keep up the great work.
