When Scream 4 hit theaters this past April, it wasn’t the box office smash that director Wes Craven and producer Bob Weinstein had hoped for – especially compared to its predecessors. While it made a little over twice its $40 million budget worldwide, it made $2 million less than that domestically. (Eek.)
Which is why it’s surprising, some five months later, to hear Wes Craven say that Scream 5 is almost definitely a go — though he might not be directing.
When asked if a Scream 5 was on the way, courtesy of Movieweb, Craven said:
“Yes. The odds are that there will be [a Scream 5]. It is something that Bob Weinstein wants to do. He tends to do what he wants to do. So I am inclined to think that there will be [another sequel]. Whether I will be a part of it or not? I don’t know. My contract gives me the first look. If they show me something that is really wonderful? Of course I will be a part of it.”
Wes Craven’s box office track record in the past few years doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in his money-making abilities. Scream 4 notwithstanding, My Soul to Take and Cursed were both terrible fiscal failures. Only Red Eye, starring Cillian Murphy and Rachel McAdams, made its money back. So it’s easy to imagine a scenario where additional Screams were made with a new director at the helm.
When asked what his plans for Scream 5 would entail, Craven said:
“I’d have to kill you if I told you. Its better to have an ending where you can’t tell where it’s going to go next. Than to have an ending where you go, ‘Oh, that is the hook for the sequel. That is the hook for the next one.’ We felt it was better to let the audience speculate than to have all of these clues placed in their lap. It’s not a matter of not being smart enough [to figure out how 4 ties into 5]. We’re clever at this. Let’s just put it that way.”

The cast of 'Scream 4'
On how the films are concocted:
“Most people think that I sit around and think up [the] ideas, then I send them to the studio. With Scream, that is not the case. Kevin Williamson has been the writer since day one. He has been the writer on all of these projects, at least at the beginning of them. That relationship with him and Bob Weinstein is very old, and close. Typically what will happen is that Bob Weinstein or Kevin Williamson will come up with a new idea, and they will pitch it to one or the other. If they both like it, they will toss it around and see if they can develop it into an overarching concept. Then I get the telephone call. They say, ‘We have something to show you.’ It will either be a scene, or if it is Kevin Williamson, he will run through the idea with me from beginning to end. That is what happened on this one. There were a few pages. Not many. At some point there was a first draft. But it mainly started with me and Kevin Williamson sitting down in a restaurant in Los Angeles. He showed me how it would go, and I really thought he had something there. So I signed on. Before that point, I am at a position where I don’t want to be involved with something until the script is there. That makes me not a part of the original process, of banging out the idea. I think that Kevin Williamson is the best at that. And Bob Weinstein is all over that too. I don’t want to play another guy in that. Going into [Scream 4], the first meeting I had with Kevin Williamson, he did sketch out a Scream 5 and 6. The idea was that we were doing the first in a new trilogy. We had to wait to see if we made enough money on each film to make the next one viable. If that happens, those two will come up with the concepts and an idea that is worth fulfilling.”
It’s interesting to hear about the relationship between Kevin Williamson – who has had two TV hits recently with The Vampire Diaries and Secret Circle – and Bob Weinstein, especially considering the admitted friction they had on the Scream 4 set (which may or may not have led to their parting of the ways, which may or may not have been the reason Kevin Williamson has yet to watch the fourquel). Would Williamson really be up for rounding out the second Scream trilogy after all that?
Despite its less-than-impressive box office take, Scream 4 was a fun, tongue-in-cheek – to the point of self-parody – horror flick. There were a lot of clever, funny, and creative ideas throughout with regard to recent industry movements like “torture porn” and “horror-movie-remake-itus”. And even though it was nothing to write home about (and definitely a lesser picture than the original), it was easily as good or better than 2 and 3.
The point being: this particular writer would welcome a Scream 5, if said sequel ended up being as entertaining as number four.
But what about you guys? Are you interested in seeing a fifth Scream, or was the fourth the straw the broke the camel’s back? Let us know in the comments.

You have to make a scream 5 and six common guys westy u made like 30 nightmares on elm streets so why don’t u and those other guys make 30 screams they are amazing movies accept the 3rd it sucked I thought but please make more
Actually Alex, Wes was only involved with the First one. He had little to no influence on the third. (These are the Nightmare films by the way.) He has stated in print and the Nightmare on Elm Street documentary, that he never wanted Nightmare to be a franchise with a ton of sequels. The only other Nightmare he did was the New Nightmare, which was vastly different in set up and mythology.
Get your facts straight before you tout off.
Ugh oh my god nobody like a smarty pants just say he was in them
Ugh oh my god leave Alex alone
I think that Scream 5 would be a fantastic idea, as long as wes craven was the director and it still have the same stars and ideas as the others. The Scream movies are a fanastic series and i would love to see more as long as the new ones are as creative or more creative than the originals.
you should make a scream 5 and end all the series by using sidney as the killer and she kills dewie and the tv reporter
I think in 5 their should be 2 killers again, but not working together so not only killing everyone else their trying to work out who each other are and kill them
Scream 5 and 6 is needed after that im fine if they dont make a seven but i would still want one
Scream 5 and 6 going to
Be awesome. But bring back Nick Cave and trouble in woods burrow soundtracks. Please. That’s the only thing I did not like about scream 4. I wand the red right hand back in the next 2 scream movies.

totally agree love those soundtracks!!!!!
Yes. They totally should make a Scream 5. Me and my friends are huge fans of the scream movies even though the first 2 came out before we where born, but still huge, huge fans of the movies. It would be awesome. If they make a fifth Scream count on us being there.
I love the Scream movies! I didn’t care for the 4 th because it was so pradictible, but the more I saw it the more I loved it. I would love to see Scream 5!!! Just hopefully get more creative on the killer and their motive.
I love Scream, but Sidney is gonna have a mental breakdown….if i was her, id be like omg….really!!! They need to finish it in Scream 5 or let Neve Campells character be like kill me already…ha ha!!
I loved Scream 4. I loved all the Scream movies even though I’m not a horror fan. The best part was maintaining the original cast as primary figures. “Don’t f*ck with the original!!!!) Anybody could have played the kids (although Hayden was fun). I DEFINITELY want a Scream 5 with the original cast.
i just now heard about talk of a 5th and a 6th?! I’m a huge fan of Scream it’s my favorite horror movie, and though i was super excited for the 4th one i was equally wary but it didn’t disappoint. i though emma roberts was brilliant, a truly chilling psycho. i’m only excited for a 5th Scream if they maintain the 3 original cast members as they have in the last 4. though i don’t really know how much more you can do other than making sidney finally snap and be the killer. either way i will go see it because i simply can’t help myself. i wish they would show the original Scream at the theater again during halloween or something, i was about 8 or 9 when it came out so i didn’t get to see it in the theater but would love to.
I have been a HUGE fan of the scream series since I was like 5. When I found out that there was a Scream 4 I was so excited. It was a great movie. Horror films in this generation are not the same as they used to be in the 90′s, so it is expected to see horror films not hitting their peaks in the box office now a days, but like the other Scream movies, it was a fresh take on the series on the teen side of life, if anything better. It was much more gory, sexy, and left me guessing who the killer was until the end. Should they keep the series going? In my opinion, definately. It’s a great series and one of the best horror films since the 90′s that continues to keep my interest to this day.
i love the scream movies, so of course i want there to be a fifth one. one of the things i love the most is that 3 orignal characters are still alive, its so rare in horror movies for characters to come back in sequals, and after so 3 more movies, 3 are still alive and coming back! so they should keep coming back in a fifth movie and many more!!!
I hope they make a scream 5 on scream 4 Jenny talks about there being a stab 4 , 5, 6, and a stab 7 maybe they should make that many screams
YES make a scream5 scream is a classic ps make it in 3D that would be beast
I want scream 5!!:(( that’s my favorite movie
Pleeeaasssee do a fifth scream. I absolutly LOVE those movies !!!!!
Please make a fifth scream. I LOVE those movies!!!!
I think there should be a fifth scream because the first four movies are really good and i think the fifth movie could top all the rest.
You have to make a scream 5! You can’t just end with scream four with the non conclusive ending you used!
I agree with those who want a scream 5 & 6. To be honest, part 4 kinda got me confused because of course that begins a new trilogy, why would you do that? No offense to no one, scream movies are badass & i love them! & wes craven you should direct them!! My opinion is why not show a little bit more detail about sydney’s mom’s past .. Unless that doesn’t sound like a good idea..

Scream is one of the very few movies who keep the sequels fresh and brilliant. I will only have a problem if there wasn’t another sequel!:)
Is Kirby still gonna be alive that be cool if she was
I have a feeling that scream 5 is already underway , I think that they will film in secret and then boom scream 5 trailer in time for Halloween , neve played innocent really well, my take on scream 5 , 2 killers only 1 revealed and and 6 finishes it off with the killer who lived through 5
Yay! i love the scream series. but i am kinda confused on wat its gonna be about lol!
I think they should make a Scream 5 and have a couple murders to start it off. Then Gale gets killed but still put up a good fight. Then Dewey should die on the next night saving one of the new teens. Then Sidney finally snaps after the two who she is closest to die. Sidney searches for the killer finds him/her kills them and gets arrested for killing an innocent person. Because the real killer framed him/her. Sidney is taken to a mental institution and tries to tell people the real killer is on the lose. It ends and sets a story for the next movie.
Please please please make another Scream!!! The Scream movies are the best horror movies ever made!
