Anna Paquin & Kristen Bell Join ‘Scream 4′ Cast

Add two more names to the list of potential victims to be killed by the psychotic Ghostface – stars Anna Paquin and Kristen Bell have signed on to make a cameo appearance in next year’s Scream 4.

Director Wes Craven will once again helm the newest entry in the successful horror series, which is being penned by his Scream 1 & 2 screenwriter Kevin Williamson – Scream 3 writer Ehren Kruger is handling on-set revisions.

Neve Campbell returns as Sidney Prescott in Scream 4, which takes place in real-time, ten years after the events of the third installment.  Campbell will be joined by fellow Scream alumnus and real-life married couple David Arquette and Courteney Cox, who play onscreen married couple Sheriff Dewey Riley and Gale Weathers-Riley, respectively.

Several new actors are onboard to play potential victims of the new Ghostface killer (no Wu-Tang pun intended), including younger faces like Hayden Panettiere (Heroes), Emma Roberts, and Rory Culkin (Signs) – not to mentioned more experienced performers like Mary McDonnell.

TV favorites Paquin (True Blood) and Bell (Veronica Mars) are both likely candidates to get off’d during the opening sequence of Scream 4.  The Scream franchise has made a tradition out of killing famous celebrities in the first five minutes of each film – one which began with Drew Barrymore in the original Scream (see below) – and it looks like the fourth entry will not buck that trend.

Scream 4 will reportedly be the first in a new trilogy – assuming it does well enough at the box office to justify two additional sequels.  While it is not an official reboot, the word is that Campbell and her fellow Scream veterans will “pass on the torch” to their younger costars in the fourth film.

The original Scream trilogy fashioned itself as a hip, post-modern horror flick in which characters were familiar with the clichés of the genre and paid the ultimate price when they forgot “the rules of survival.”  How the fourth movie will update that premise for the new decade remains to be seen.

Scream 4 arrives in theaters in the U.S. on April 15th, 2011.

  1. Why is Anna Paquin’s hair trying to crawl into her mouth?
Now, that would make for a good scene in a horror flick; some girl’s hair trying to crawl into her mouth and suffocate her.

As for the Scream-franchise, I couldn’t care less.

    • Not quite hair crawling into the mouth but I remember watching Poltergeist 2 (I think it was the sequal) when I was younger and the little boy was brushing his teeth when all of a sudden his braces started to worm out and wrap him up in a metal cocoon to the ceiling. Freaked me out as a kid. Nothing to do with the article at all, but your comment reminded me of that scene.

  2. this movie going to suck lke all the rest of them exept the first one

  3. I don’t think you could have found a worse pic of Anna Paquin. I’m actually looking forward to this movie.

    • Here, here… First it was the god awful unflattering picture of Joss Whedon posing like some poster boy of emo-super nerdom, article after article and now this dog photo. Who actually takes such terrible pictures and expects to make a buck out of them anyway? A one eyed monkey with a Polaroid instamatic could take a better picture. I wish that ACME school of awful photography would close their dang doors already, it’s starting to get aggravating! I believe in gainful employment for the handicapped but a legally blind professional photographer is just going too far…

  4. I love kristen bell!! Im looking forward to this movie!

  5. I can’t wait to see this film and how this new trilogy pans out. Pity that Anna Paquin will be a victim in the film but i guess for alot of good actors/actress it could happen sooner or later. I can’t wait to see who the killer ends up being, I suspect already it’s the girl whos obsessed with Sidney and jealous of her.

    • I agree. She does the doe-eyed unstable thing very well on ‘Community’. I could totally see her cracking and killing. But then again, remember Adam Brody’s unsettling turn as a psycho Satan worshipper? His sarcastic deliveries are brilliant. (they could BOTH be the killers)

      • clarification: Adam Brody in ‘Jennifer’s Body’

  6. I enjoyed the first 3 films. But I have a problem with the “pass the torch” idea. Why not just start a new franchise, a new villian. Movies and their sequals are attached to the actors that made them. Movie goers put names to faces and when you change the face you change the quality of the movie. GL though.

  7. I enjoyed all 3 previous films aswell. But i kinda like the idea of passing the torch idea. But only if was to be done slowly as this is only the first of a new trilogy so i would like to keep something from the old trilogy mixed with this fresh one. Im sure Wes Craven & Kevin Williamson will deliver.

  8. i LOVE the Scream franchise and i’m going out of mind since they announced this i mean c’mon the franchise was great part 2 was a little weak but i loved 3 and how (SPOILER ALERT!) her brother was behind all of it! i mean that was a great twist i can’t wait to see where this new franchise goes i think Wes has something great in the works!

  9. I am so glad they decided to do more even if many hate the idea. Apperantly Mathew Lillard might be involved!

  10. see me in 20 years.
