The Godfather series may be the bible of mob movies, but the New Testament certainly includes a chapter on Martin Scorsese’s mob films, Goodfellas and Casino.

Today mob movie fans have reason to rejoice, as Reuters is reporting that Scorsese is reteaming with his longtime friend and collaborator Robert De Niro for a new project once again set in the world of crime and gangsters.

There are few details about the project, although we know from Scorsese himself what the story concept is. Check out what Scorsese had to say during the Berlin premiere of his latest film, Shutter Island (which we review HERE):

“Bob De Niro (and I) are talking about something that has to do with [the mobster] world..There’s no doubt about that. We’re working on something like that, but it’s from the vantage point of older men looking back, none of this running around stuff.”

While that sounds interesting, I can’t help but point out that both Goodfellas and Casino were told in the narrative structure of a former gangster looking back over his life of crime. Where I think this new Scorsese/De Niro project will be different, however, is in the tone of the story.

With Casino and Goodfellas, for all the consequences that the “bad guys” ultimately face, there is this element of glamor brought to the mobster lifestyle. Before the prison stints, or the threat of “being whacked” in the third act, the main characters usually spent 2/3 of the movie enjoying wealth, power and infamy. A main character that is older, wiser, and clearly critical of his mob lifestyle from the very  beginning – brought to you by two of the guys who helped make mob life famous – would be a powerful and interesting movie to see.

Or, to sum it up in short words: seeing De Niro and Scorsese working together again on ANYTHING is pretty much awesome.

If you’re reading this, I’m sure you’re as hungry for more details as we are. Stay tuned to Screen Rant or follow me on Twitter for updates on this new Scorsese/De Niro mob flick.

  1. Lets hope Scorsese figures out how to keep Bobby from mailing it in.

  2. NOW GO HOME AND GET YOUR F***IN SHINE BOX!

  3. Very good news…It doesn't get much better than Scorsese and De Niro together.

  4. Indeed. De Niro (and Al Pacino) have both been mostly phoning it in for a long time now – they need good directors who aren't afraid of them to firmly put a loving boot in their butt…like Scorsese.

  5. Rumor has it that the movie Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro are referring to below is non other than “Dino Cellini.” http://www.dinocellini.com/

Martin Scorsese is keen to revive a cinematic partnership with Robert De Niro that goes
back to “Mean Streets” nearly 40 years ago and says the project will be related to the
mobster world. “Bob De Niro [and I] are talking about something that has to do with that world,” Scorsese told reporters after a screening of his latest film, “Shutter Island,” at the Berlin film festival. “There's no doubt about that. We're working on something like that, but it's from the vantage point of older men looking back, none of this running-around stuff.” The Hollywood heavyweights last worked together on “Casino” in 1995. Earlier collaborations include “Raging Bull,” “Taxi Driver” and “Cape Fear.”
