Over the last six years, since Marvel Studios introduced a whole round of superhero films rolling out in phases, we’ve been treated to eight unique films within a continuous timeline. Yet not one of these films has featured a female character in the lead role, with Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow coming the closest to getting an actual storyline.

The Black Widow first appeared as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in Iron Man 2, who was tasked to keep an eye on Tony Stark by Nick Fury, before moving on to co-star (as well as have her own story arc) in the hugely successful The Avengers. Her next appearance will be in this year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where she’ll help the Captain uncover a vast conspiracy. And now with The Avengers: Age of Ultron gearing up to begin filming, and the Black Widow’s part in it said to be very big, this latest news comes at quite a surprising time.

E! News has exclusively revealed that Scarlett Johansson is expecting her first child with fiancé Romain Dauriac. The pair, who first went public with their relationship in November 2012, just announced their engagement back in September. While we’re very excited to hear the happy news and bid the couple a hardy congratulations, the question on most people’s minds now is: How will this impact The Avengers 2?

Johansson is currently preparing to go on a promotional tour for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, then she’s scheduled to join The Avengers 2 cast overseas on April 5th. However, E! News also reports the actress is already four to five months along in her pregnancy, leaving very little time to get a plan in action before filming begins.

Luckily, an inside source has revealed that shooting for the sequel will be arranged to accommodate her pregnancy:

“They’re going to fast-track her scenes.”

In other words, expect all her filming to be done as soon as possible.

Although this is the first we’re hearing of her pregnancy, it’s hard to believe that director Joss Whedon hasn’t known about it for at least a little while. At this stage, her ability to do physical stunts is quickly becoming an issue, and measures need to be taken to ensure production runs smoothly.

Usually, filming would try to hide a pregnant actress behind props and carefully placed camera angles, but seeing as this is such an action-oriented role, it’ll be interesting to see how they tackle it in this case. The likely guess is they’ll use Johansson for close ups, keeping a body double around for far away shots. One thing’s for sure though, her tight leather suit won’t hide her pregnancy for much longer.

Then there’s the matter of a solo Black Widow film. While still a long way out – and not even a sure thing at that – it’s possible the film’s future could now be in question. If Johansson puts her career on hold to raise a family, the proposed film might very well get stuck in limbo.

Then again, we may be all worrying for nothing. Plenty of actresses have families and go on to have incredibly successful careers, even in the action movie genre. The good news is, she’s definitely still in The Avengers 2 and, as far as we know, her role won’t be truncated.

What do you think of the news, Screen Rant readers?

  1. So that explains the changed origins of Ultron. Black Widow will be Ultron’s mother.

    • Then she’ll eat the father’s head

    • Captain America: “Here, Black Widow… hold my shield. For the rest of the movie. Please.”

  2. I think this won’t be as big of an issue as people think; many actors have been subbed by stunt people who’ve had the actor’s face digitally added to their own to great effect. The Star Wars prequels, The Crow, etc. I’m glad for the expecting parents.

    • The two examples you give just happen to be the two films where it’s fairly obvious their features were digitally imposed- especially with Count Dooku. You’ll have to redefine “great effect”.

      • Avengers tracking shot was all cg.

  3. What if….and hear me out on this…Whedon incorporates the pregnancy into Avengers 2, Black Widow gives birth at the end of the film to…wait for it…..THANOS!!! It’s a great way to swerve everyone on Thanos’ arrival to Earth and is a completely original idea that has never been used by Whedon in any of his previous TV shows. *shifty eyes*

    • We’ve already seen him fully grown at the end of the first Avengers though.

      • Thanos is actually the father. That will lead the cliffhanger that leads into Avengers 3

  4. sorry guys, shes all mine

    • What…you mean she’s leaving me for you?!

    • You can have her. She is not my type anyway. The green arrow guy next to Black Widow is my type. ^_^

      • that’s hawkeye next to her.

  5. Damn ! That Quicksilver sure is fast. ^_^

  6. Women have been having babies since long before the movie industry existed. We’re just finding this news out now, but if she’s 4-5 months along already, Marvel Studios almost certainly knew already… and yet they’ve still been talking about the prospect of a Black Widow solo movie for Phase 3: if they’re not phased by this news, us members of the audience have no right to be.

    Besides -

    a) We’ve not seen The Winter Soldier yet, and we don’t know what situation Steve and Natasha will be in at the end of that. If there really is going to be a SHIELD civil war, which a lot of people are guessing, Age of Ultron might see Cap and Widow as “civilians” – which might mean Scarlett’s wardrobe for the movie could be a little more forgiving of baby bumps.

    b) A lot of the action scenes where Scarlett wore the leather jumpsuit in Avengers were filmed on green screen rather than on physical sets. That kind of shooting is easy to fast-track, because you don’t need to construct any sets. Her scenes that took place on physical sets involved being sat in a Quinjet, sat behind the briefing table on the helicarrier… those kind of scenes make it easy to aim a camera away from a bump. Also, Tony and Bruce (and even Steve at one point) were wearing comfortable civilian clothes during those scenes: having Scarlett change out of her “costume” and into something a little more comfortable / loose for those scenes makes it easier to disguise bumps.

    c) Age of Ultron is already adding three new characters to the Avengers line-up – Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Vision. That’s already a lot of people to share screen time with, so while Black Widow may be important to the story/plot, she’s not necessarily in every single action scene. If she was, but tweaks need to be made, there’s all those extra characters… or Joss could use the opportunity to sneak Falcon in, or to add another kickass lady like Wasp (who he wanted in the first movie) or Mockingbird (who is also Hawkeye’s partner/love interest) so that there’s someone else to do the ass-kicking Widow would have done, while letting Scarlett continue to do the plot-heavy stuff.

  7. Oh my his she’s pregnant not dead what’s the big deal. You’re acting like the Avengers and the rest of the Matvel Universe might be over because she has a kid. I can tell you obviously don’t because you don’t know what your talking about.

  8. Just cut her out. A mere human shouldn’t be on the same likes of the elite 4 that is the avengers. If anything she’s a liability to that team.

    • She’s a highly- trained spy. She specializes at espionage, and is able to take on multiple enemies singlehandedly. Watch the Avengers, and see how quickly she was able to blast a swarm of Chitauri as soon as she got a weapon.

And she also used her espionage in the final battle. More than fighting against, she also looked for a way to shut the portal, and she did.

      • Give it up, they could of put you in the movie and written your character to do all those things and you’d be amazing too.

  9. If you listen carefully, you can hear the crying of every straight man’s p*nis…

    • +1

  10. I feel sure Marvel and Scarlett have discussed at great length what’s going to happen, and I don’t think the rest of us need to worry about it, myself. Honestly, I wish the parents-to-be all the happiness and joy in the world, and just think everyone’s focus should be on wishing Scarlett a healthy, stress-free, happy pregnancy.

    Just my two cents worth…

  11. Black Widow could be pregnant in the movie. Depending on how long it is between winter soldier and age of ultron, the mid credit scene could be widow meeting up with a shadowy figure.
    “We have a problem.”
    “What”
    “I’m pregnant.”
Shadowy figure is revealed with a shocked look on his face.

Shadowy figure could be good guy or bad guy, depending on where whedon wants to take the story.

  12. I would have thought anything full body they could just cgi these days.

  13. I just hope that they don’t make a Black Widow solo movie, for God’s sake. So many other characters that are better and richer than her and they’re just going to revisit who she is in a solo bout. Shame.

  14. Congrats Scar.

  15. Better than what happened to Storm.

  16. Wow, I thought she was still single. Then again, I don’t read celebrity gossip rags and generally try to avoid anything that talks about a celeb’s personal life.

    Still though, congrats to her.

    • lol, If you don’t bother to read about celebrity gossip why would you assume or think she was single?

  17. I remember watching an episode of the show “Science of the Movies” where they showed this proprietary CG system that could make a very pregnant woman not look pregnant, or give a fat guy a six pack (they demonstrated both).

I can’t remember what the system was called, but basically they can use something like that for vital shots, since I’m sure they’ll have the budget.

  18. Nothing, it means nothing.

  19. So now they are going to rush production on this movie? This means we fans are going to get a crappy movie in the end. Marvel is starting to show cracks in their armor. First with their lame captain america movie that will tie into their god awful agents of shield, then their cheesey gauardians of the galaxy trailer, and finally their stupid bug movie in 2015. DC is far above Marvel in every way, especially when you have the three biggest comic book heroes of all time on screen for the first time in history: Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. DC’s Dark Knight trilogy, Man of Steel, Arrow are far superior to anything Marvel has.

    • Troll is trolling.

    • you call yourself a fan? jeez, i’d hate to hear [read] what you’d say if you weren’t!

  20. Her scenes in The Avengers were my favorite in the movie. Hope she is able to continue the great work soon!

  21. Work it into the script and have Widow pregnant with Franklin Richards – Fanboy freakout in 3 …2….1..

  22. To whom it may concern. Maury Povich has confirmed it: I am the father!

  23. I heard somewhere that they CGIed RDJ’s face onto a body double for Iron Man 3 when he was injured. If they can manage to make Mark Ruffalo the hulk I am confidant they will have no problem shooting around this. Not to mention, I never expected to see Widow in the thick of battle quite as much this time around. I figured she’d be mission control, cause Black Widow vs Robots isn’t quite a fair fight (unless we find out in Winter Soldier that she was given super serum like in the comics). Congrats to her and her fiance.

  24. they will probably do what the x-men did with halle berry.

    • Fill her up with Botox?

  25. OK, if she is 5 months prego now, then she is showing and she should be due in July. If Marvel can subtract her from a few scenes and she can come back and shot her remaining close ups in September she won’t need to be replaced. Say post production starts in October and her stunt double shoots Black Windows action scenes this summer. All should be fine. This could be a blessing – continuity wise, since Whedon is adding War Machine, QS and, the SW.

    • Yeah! I think you have hit it spot on! In fact it might be best if they have her back for reshoots post baby since she will be out doing press for Cap 2 for a good chunk of the month. And looking at pictures from recently, she’s showing already. But if they can make me believe Chris Evans face is only that tiny little pre-surum Steve Rogers body, I am sure we won’t notice.

  26. Three Superheroes and a Baby ! (4 if you count Hulk).
I wouldn’t worry about how it will affect the Avengers 2 – as Trevor Slattery would say….” It’s all movie magic luv” !

  27. Write her out and replace her with Ms. Marvel. Do it!

  28. Just dump her and recst someone who actually fits the part.

  29. What does this means? Marvel might want to rethink. doing a female lead movie?

    • Ummm…I think not.

We’ve had more than enough of that kind of nonsense. Cate Blanchett called it exactly right on Oscar night on that topic.
