Scarlett Johansson Talks Playing Black Widow in The Avengers and Iron Man 3 Scarlett Johansson Talks Black Widow in The Avengers & Iron Man 3

While The Dark Knight Rises prologue is wowing people in theaters – or in some cases, confusing the heck out of them with Bane’s garbled growls – we’re still waiting for the second real trailer for The Avengers.

Scarlett Johansson, who has been promoting We Bought a Zoo, recently talked about her role in The Avengers and her possible role in 2013’s Iron Man 3.

When asked by MTV Splash Page if she was concerned she wouldn’t get enough screen-time, she said:

“There are a lot of people to serve in [‘The Avengers’], for sure. The Widow has a great story. I think Joss did a great job of weaving together all these characters’ stories. It was no small feat for him.”

Hmm. Seems like a pretty run-of-the-mill company line, unfortunately.

However, Scarlett admits that she’s yet to see the final product and has no idea how much of her work will remain on the cutting room floor:

“You never know in a big film like this. There could be six hours squashed down in 90 minutes or whatever it’s going to be, and you wonder what might be sacrificed.”

Asked if she plays a role in Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 – which Robert Downey Jr. said has the best screenplay he has read in years – Scarlett said:

“I have no idea. I don’t know if I can get that latex suit on after the finishing ‘Avengers.’ I might have to take a break from the latex suit for a minute, eat some real cheese, and then get back into it.”

Scarlett Johansson in Iron Man 2 Scarlett Johansson Talks Black Widow in The Avengers & Iron Man 3

Frankly, some people wouldn’t be too nonplussed by Scarlett Johansson’s lack of participation in the Iron Man threequel. Her part in Iron Man 2 is largely considered to be one of the worst aspects of that film, in spite of a great many underwhelming aspects.

What about you, Screen Ranters? Do you want to see Scarjo in Iron Man 3?  And are you looking forward to seeing her play the Black Widow in The Avengers? Let us know in the comments.

  1. Worst aspects of the film? It was one of my favs! Black Widow OWNS

    • Why, exactly, would you say that she owns? In Iron Man 2?

      • Good question..
I like some underwhelming films myself, but IM2 was a rather soulless mess..
        ..much like Cowboys and Aliens.

        • Iron Man 2 was nowhere near as bad as Cowboys and Aliens, but it did lack the focus of the first film.

        • smelly

    • i know!! it was one of my fav parts of the film!!

    • I’d say its not that she owns (or that she was one of the “worst” parts of the film”, its just that she really had no impact on the movie. I mean she more or less had no part, besides to look really hot (which she did do well..). When I think of her part I cant say I am disappointed…I could just really careless. When I start talking about IM2 and complaining I cant say she comes up in conversation, there are a lot of other things that come to mind first.

And in her defense (or the characters defense)..the one scene where she kicks ass is well…kick ass.

Overall I am fine with her being in IM3 and even having an increased part. But that bigger part shouldn’t just mean more screen time with no dialogue so we can stare at her…it should be a bigger part with an actual storyline.

      • i agree with that. i also wonder if that character will follow the same route as in the animated avengers. i don’t want to say in here due to posible spoilers, and i havent watched that whole series. it’s on netflix and i’ve got too many other shows im watching on their, but i watched the 1st 4 or 5 episodes, and i don’t know what to think about her

        • I highly doubt they’d follow the EMH route. It’s not the kind of story that can be done on the big screen. It needs more time to breathe.

  2. i thought she was ok in IM2, and think she would be ok in IM3 for a cameo or something. i guess it depends on the story. i know all these actors have signed multi-picture deals and making a small appearance in a film counts as one, so who knows how marvel will handle cameos and all that. i didn’t like scarjo refering to the movie “There could be six hours squashed down in 90 minutes or whatever it’s going to be…” i think it needs to be at least over 2 hrs, and then an even longer directors cut on dvd/blu ray.
i wish marvel would release the next trailer already, and show some hulk this time around!

  3. I’d see Scarlett Johanson in anything!

    • I’d like to see her in my arms! Or there’s even a few things I could think of her “out of”! Whew…time for a quick cold shower!

    • Really? I’d like to see her in nothing…. ;)

  4. “Her part in Iron Man 2 is largely considered to be one of the worst aspects of that film, in spite of a great many underwhelming aspects.”

    According to…who exactly?

    • That comment surprised me to. If ScarJo was the worst thing for you about IM2, I’d say you need to readjust your priorities in what your looking for in a movie. Considering all the problems, Black Widow being in there wouldn’t even make my list.

    • According to Ben Moore. I have been looking through the comments, and while there are some who agree that IM2 was “underwhelming”, I have yet to see anyone concur with his opinion that Ms. Johansson stood out in a negative way. I believe that Mr. Moore is stating his own opinion as one that is widely held.

I would suggest that he stick to voicing his opinion as such and leave the artistic embellishments to the government.

      • actually, she WAS one of the worst aspects of the movie. everyone says that.

        • @Joe

Not to give you a hard time, but as we know “everyone” did *not*making say that, to whom are you actually referring? Are you referencing most of the online reviews you read for Iron Man 2, most of your own buddies, or some other population?

        • @Joe

          • A few weeks ago it was Mickey Rourke’s fault. Don Cheadle and Sam Rockwell are up next….

        • Not I!

  5. Scar-Jo is OK…I don’t want to take anything away from her…but she is just a supporting character, not the star, and could not carry a movie (either her or her character) on their own. Another supporting role would be OK for the next film, but certainly not essential. More essential is that we would see Iron Man fight The Mandarin (all other considerations are secondary). It would be the same with War Machine. It would not be any great loss if he were not in Iron Man 3 (although I have nothing against War Machine–he served his purpose well enough in IM2). I hope Scarlett does not decide she is an absolutely ESSENTIAL key to the success of IM3, like Kirsten Dunst (“Dunce”? Er. sorry….)or whatever her name was thought she was the headliner in Spiderman’s movies. McGuire and Raimi were essential, the gal playing MJ was not and could be replaced. The first Rhodey in Iron Man 1 made that mistake, and neither he nor the actor playing Rhodey in IM2 were that good and essential that they could not be replaced (same thing with Bruce Banner’s actors, come to think of it!). Ego gets you nowhere.

    • Actually it was a money dispute not ego,& second terrence howard was promised he’d have a big contribution in IM2,like wearing the war machine suit, but when he got the script he had less involvement than the first & soon as they fired him favro favrue whatever the name is said they were working their hardest to make sure war machine got his fair share of time when this should’ve been done the first place…And the film still sucked to a point, made alot of money, but still mediocre.

      • Terrance Howard was fired because he wanted more money. Check production records and you’ll see he was the highest paid actor of the first film (even more than Downey). He chose to pitch a fit rather than take a pay cut, so they replaced him. Good riddance…in the time since his canning he has started a slow self-destruct.

  6. Is it just me, or does it look like ScarJo, in that 1st picture, cut loose an atomic fart that explodes the bus behind her?

    • I think it’s just you :)

    • lol… Yea she did have that look on her face, you’re silly for that one Mr.Pornstar.

    • lmao

    • Even better, it was a giant Queef!

      • ….No

    • You’re all so nasty ;-)

  7. I know this is kinda off topic, but since favreu dropped out of ironman 3 is he still gonna play Happy though??

    • He has said in a couple of interviews that if they ask him to reprise his role as Happy he has no problem coming back. For all we know though, Happy might not even be in the script.

  8. Scarlett for me just seemed very out of place in IM2. I couldnt stand her in that movie and in my opinion she was one of the worst things about IM2. The only scene that she deleivered well for me was her final fight scene against multiple oponents at the end of the movie. Im sorry i just think she was wrongly cast as that character. Not looking forward to her being in the Avengers at all and can definately do without her appearance in IM3. No dis-respect to her in any way just my opinion.

  9. Nothing against Johansson but the Black Widow character in all these movies is somewhat superfluous. I would MUCH rather have had Wasp in Avengers (and Hank Pym) but instead we get SHIELD Agent 2. Hawkeye alone could have fulfilled the role of SHIELD liaison plus he has the same skill set as Black Widow (only with a bow instead of a gun)

    • While I’d also like to see the Wasp and Ant-Man, the reality is that those characters could be added retroactively. As they can easily hide when they decrease their size, one could we could later find out that they were actually in a number of scenes which we’ve already seen in prior MCU projects.

Regarding Widow, I like the idea of her character being able to show-up unannounced… and in disguise (contrasted to the more overt Coulson). Granted, such a device only works with good writing, but I can see Marvel using the device creatively.

  10. I would rather have seen Milla Jovoich play the role. I’d always kind of pictured the character something more like her, especially the accent, build and eyes.

    • Good call.

  11. Unfortunately it seemed like they needed to cast a young and attractive a-lister for IM2 so Black Widow just got shoe horned in to make it happen. It’s been over a year since I’ve seen it but if I remember correctly all her role consisted of was looking hot in street clothes so RDJ could flirt with her and then the one scene where she kicks a$& in a hallway while looking hot. Did I miss anything?
All my complaining is basically just to say either give her more to do or just don’t include the character in the story at all. Between The Avengers and IM3 there will be enough going on that will hold my interest so I don’t want someone else sucking up screen time just for the sake of including a character from the source material that no one would miss anyway. Run-on sentence finished….

  12. Iron Man 2 was a film with no spark, I kept waiting for it get interesting but the whole thing just seemed like a setup for the Avengers movie. Scarlett Johansson was stiff and bland but she didn’t detract from the movie IMHO. The whole movie was rather boring. Whiplash…meh.

  13. mmm she’s sexy

  14. Have you noticed that in “ALMOST” all the Avengers individual movie posters they all seem to focus on her butt? Thats it

  15. “Asked if she plays a role in Shane Black’s Iron Man 3″

Lord, I hope not. She was the most annoying part about IM2.

  16. Well…..I’m just looking forward to this Film (Avengers)
As far as IM3..not particularlly interested in the Shane Black and RDJ’s “Bromance…
Any who dosnt see “Downy using the same “leverage that was joked about in “Tropical Thunder is blind!!
But alas True Belivers this Train is coming to a end..and whoever plays “Tony Stark next …I hope they appreciate the role and work within the MCU and actually like it. No “BIGGER…than the character stuff that has been displayed by only 1Avenger….

I like what’s been done but…Sorry People….a good THOR film beats the crapp outta the “Tech World of Ironman “anytime..
All depends if your into that “Sword and Socery guff…

So Scarjo..if the Boys don’t want you in their playground..I’m sure there are some “Who’ll take you..

    • I’m sorry, but your constant use of only one set of quote marks is highly annoying, and kinda invaladates everything you’re saying. Not that it made any sense to begin with.

  17. Man just give me my Luke Cage and Black Panther movie and dont do a solo film of the Widow.

  18. Worst parts of the film how so she did a pretty good job and the real point was to put a shield influence into the film besides nick fury. Plus it introduced the character. I thought her part was fine. Of course I also thought iron man 2 was a good movie it entertained and actually had a good fight scene at the end.

  19. Sherlock Holmes didn’t do well..Opening Day..
Wonder if Mr. Downy will toe the company ladder now..
Those interviews where he blew past Joss Whedon’s take on the Avengers and shifted to IM3..was disgusting and unprofessional, and disrespectfull..Kevin Feige is sitting back in post production of The Avengers and wondering..if IM3 isn’t liked by the Fans…RDJ is DONE! Kev gave these guys a shot..better knock it out the Park..no Nancy,Ten Rings, nothin..

Reality is a hard pill to swallow…but He’ll go off and do other things..and well have a Ironman (Actor) that actually wants to be an Avenger!!!

    • @tr8-
“Sherlock Holmes didn’t do well..Opening Day..”it did 14 mil, not impressive, but hey, it’s a tough economy, and people like me that have a family tend to wait til matinee prices on sat. afternoon, which is still 30 if all 5 of us go
“Wonder if Mr. Downy will toe the company ladder now..” what company ladder are you referring to exactly? what company? sherlock is WB, the avengers is marvel/disney…
“Those interviews where he blew past Joss Whedon’s take on the Avengers and shifted to IM3..was disgusting and unprofessional, and disrespectfull..” what interviews are you referring too? this is the second time i’ve seen someone post about RDJ being rude to whedon about the 2 movies, and i have yet to read these alleged interviews. i would think if these actually existed, they would have made it on this site
“Kevin Feige is sitting back in post production of The Avengers and wondering..if IM3 isn’t liked by the Fans…RDJ is DONE!” …and you know this how? you are basing this on what? that he made some comment about 1 film in favor of another, and both films are being produced by Kevin Feige?
” Kev gave these guys a shot..better knock it out the Park..no Nancy,Ten Rings, nothin..” what are you talking about? nancy…ten rings…what does that even mean?

  20. Scarlett’s got the chops and the right approach.. she seems to take the various facets of a Marvel-world blockbuster seriously… so, with a stunning script and a dead-serious director with a lot to prove, Black Widow SHOULD get a bit more screen time. nuff said.

  21. Jeffro…
You seemed to have responded to my comments in a very strange and curious behavior…
I’m the 2nd person you know of that mentioned the “Wheddon thang..Thank goodness for that ..I was starting to think , you thought I made it up…
Go to comicbookmovies.com and ref all of the Avenger posts..it will update you..and if you didn’t like what I wrote about RDJ (And I was being Nice) then I suggest don’t read some of the comments..”Whoa!
The Nancy..typo was just that a typo..it was supposed to say “Mandarin…theses touch screen Phones with their *Spellcheck..whatcha gonna do..***
I’m in the bizz..and right now I’m dealing with a “RDJ type …who has now actually asked for more production rights..so His behavior is not a uncommon thing..but it always comes from the same type of person…
Now “Jeffro…I know its safe to say ..that even you know theres no “I in TEAM…Chris Evans, Chris Hems, Tom Hidd, have all *behaved very professionally during speaking engagements ..etc..etc..
RDJ signed a 4 pic deal with Marvel Studios..back when he was making another “comeback..had some good TV thing going..good press..but IM put him on top again…there’s no sense of *appreciation to the Studio for taking a chance..not *Kissing Ass…professional courtesy…no, no Jeffro..you don’t think so..not even where , when asked about The Avengers..talk about the Avengers…not “My guy (Shane Black)wrote the best script I’ve seen in 5 yrs… What the hell was that…HEY! We’re talking Wheddon/qAvengers..not IM3..and then he didn’t even go back to the Avengers.. Is Downy prepping his exit…???
Downy tried several times to get “Wheddon to change the script to where it would be Ironman and the Avengers…Wheddon actually, actually made a attempt but foresaw, whereas…It wouldn’t make sense to the overall scheme of the Movie, Avenger Franchise, future films..
Since that time…well let’s just say…its been a funny thing..
Kevin Feige didn’t keep Ed Norton…whom I think is a perfect “Bruce Banner..but when..the guy takes the script re writes it..gives the director/producer a fit..etc..etc..but at lest he gave good interviews on the project…

    • @ Tra8,

Exactly what is so strange and curious about the way i responded to your post? I broke down each one of your points and replied with my own thought/question. What I find “strange and curious” is your constant, and annoying use of one set of quotation marks in all your posts. If you are indeed “in the biz” (see how i did that there?) as you claim, then surely (i won’t call you Shirley)it isn’t as a script-writer, or anything grammatically related.
I went to comicbookmovies.com per your suggestion, and it seems to be an advertisement for different shopping websites, so again, i ask you where are these interviews where RDJ was being unprofessional? Post a link. Show me where he said this:” “My guy (Shane Black)wrote the best script I’ve seen in 5 yrs… ” (my end quotes, you don’t have any)
I’m also puzzled by this in your post, ” I’m in the bizz..and right now I’m dealing with a “RDJ type …who has now actually asked for more production rights..so His behavior is not a uncommon thing..but it always comes from the same type of person… ” who this person is, and his asking for more “production rights” has nothing to do with RDJ, that I can discern.
The next item I question is this, ” Downy tried several times to get “Wheddon to change the script to where it would be Ironman and the Avengers…Wheddon actually, actually made a attempt but foresaw, whereas…It wouldn’t make sense to the overall scheme of the Movie, Avenger Franchise, future films..” What are you talking about? What fake website did you get this tidbit from? I am not bashing you or trying to start some flame war, i just want some clarification on some of your claims, because it all sounds like speculation and “Avenger movie hating” (see, end quotes, try it sometime.) to me.
I am not affiliated with anything having to do with any movie or any website, I’m just a movie fan, and i like picking apart movies too, but i base my claims on facts, or just my opinion. I’m not part of any Marvel vs DC group, i have enjoyed “superhero” films for years, as long as they are good. In my opinion, The Avengers will be great, because all the “pre Avenger” movies have been great, even IM2, complete with Scarjo and the trash talking Mickey Rourke, who, in my opinion, was the worst part of that film. (maybe a tie with Sam Rockwell) I also think TDKR will be great because the other 2 films were great, in my opinion. As for which one will be better, well that is a matter of opinion. I look forward to your next half quote post.

      • I agree with you. People need to stop with all this DC vs Marvel war. And yes the worst thing about IM2 is the combination of Rockwell (cant believe he was considered for Stark role) and Rourke (who is a drama queen). Here are my opinions on what i think was wrong in IM2,
        1. Too much comedy from Stark, IM1 took itself seriously and Stark seemed more heroic and serious about his convictions.
        2. Race track fight shouldve ended in a draw with crowd casualties to add more tension between Stark and US government.
        3. Party scene should not have Stark vs Rhodey fight, instead Rhodey shouldve came in with an army of soldiers to confiscate the armours and detain Stark.
        4. Delete Donut shop scene altogether – i feel it was to soon to reveal Romanoff’s identity and was unecessary. Instead Coulson and Fury shouldve arrived at an army base to get Stark out. Coulson injects Stark in neck with temporary cure. Then go straight into Stark house scene.
        5. They needed to show Stark create his new armour (this movie had no “armour making” scene at all)
        6. Final battle, Black Widow takes on Hammer guards to deactivate control of War Machine suit, War Machine takes on drones while Stark single-handedly takes on Whiplash.
        7. Whiplash needed to be more agile less armour. Needed more movement. And also wouldve been good if he starts off having the upperhand beating the life out of Stark. Until Rhodey arrives and they battle Whiplash together. More drones come in and turns into a battle royale. In the end yes they perform the dual repulsor burst.
        8. Shield warehouse scene needed Black Widow to finally reveal who she is and who Shield is. Tells Fury that Culver University is a bust.

They need to do to the Marvel movies what theyve done to the Lord of the Rings and do reshoots to add or alter scenes if necessary.

  22. Why the hell would anyone complain about seeing a hot busty piece like Scarlett Johansson? Along with Christina Hendricks, she’s one of my top hottest women in hollywood.

    • Well, as a female, I’m not really into other girls, but not even her supposed ‘hotness’ can overcome my getting past her terrible acting and inflated opinion of herself.

      • CAN’T overcome.

        • oops – typos, sorry

  23. What we should really ask ourselves here is: “Would we rather see ScarJo feature in IM3, or have her star in her own spin-off movie?”
IMO, I would prefer her to have her own spin-off (that way, she won’t be able to screw up IM3)

    • And here are a couple of spy related movies and shows to take inspiration from……..From Paris with Love, Spy Game, Bourne trilogy, Mission Impossible quadrilogy, James Bond, Haywire, ALIAS, Nikita, Even the first episode of Dark Angel. But go darker than most these flicks. Most of the movie needs to be in russian and they need to explore the red ledger more.

  24. Leave the suit on Baby! ~ Stark

  25. I don’t go to movies to see hot women, I want a good movie. While I did like IM2, it did have it’s problems and Scar Jo was one of them. When I heard Black Widow was going to be in the film, I expected the actress to try and pull off a Russian accent. Someone mentioned Mila Jovavich; I would think she would have been perfect for Black Widow.

    • I was hoping for a Russian accent as well, but then I remembered something: Scarlet Johansen is the actress portraying Black Widow (she can’t do a decent accent to save her life) ;)

      • They could just go the same route the X-Men movies did and just ignore the whole Russian thing. At least they tried to put some shade on Scarlet using an American accent with the whole undercover thing, Storm had that weird Jamaican accent in the first movie and then she lost it due to some mind wipe I guess.

      • Black Widow is THE ultimate spy, she cant have any accent give her nationality away. She is multi lingual and have knowledge of multiple languages. This was a necessity in her training in order to blend in more.

    • mila is too busy filming resident evil XIV in 5D. :)

  26. I think the Black Widows part in IM2 was far from the worst aspect of the movie. She is a secondary character who was “introduced” in IM2, the expectations were intentionally low. Will she take off as a feature film quality character, or will she remain in the background? She did all she was supposed to do in that movie. For me, the problems in IM2 were mostly in the story and had nothing to do with BW. If they had fixed those problems and made a great movie, BW’s part would have been roughly the same,(for me). I think BW is a character alot like Batman, very difficult to translate directly to film. All that being said, I’d like to see Scarjo return as BW and have a big impact, in IM3 or some other Marvel feature. If she doesnt, I sure wont take a bottle of sleeping pills over it.

  27. I hope she will not appear in IM3, her acting was awful in the 2nd movie. To me she was one of the reasons the film didn’t work so well.
