Lionsgate will release the seventh chapter in their successful "torture porn" series, Saw 3D, this October.  A new trailer for the film has been released and it hints that this will indeed be the final Saw movie - despite rumors that plans for Saw 8 are already being developed.

Saw 3D (previously known as Saw 7) touts the tagline "The Traps Come Alive" and promises to be a fully immersive experience for moviegoers who see it in 3D.  The official trailer for the film actually delivers on that promise and features lots of in-your-face shots of deadly weaponry that threatens to do irreparable harm to the audience members - both those watching the trailer and in the trailer itself.

Former editor turned director Kevin Greutert reunited with his Saw VI screenwriters Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton for the seventh Saw pic, which revolves around a group of individuals who survived the now-deceased Jigsaw's traps and seek closure from fellow survivor and self-help guru, Bobby Dagen (Sean Patrick Flanery). That turns out to be a poor choice on their part.

The new Saw 3D trailer does not reveal exactly which notable actors from previous Saw films will return, though one familiar face has already been confirmed.  What this preview does do is deliver exactly what fans want - people getting tortured by elaborate traps and lots of it.

3D films have long used the illusion that objects onscreen are flying out at the viewing audience, enough so that a lot of moviegoers nowadays consider it to be a cheap gimmick.  Saw 3D may not feature engaging characters or an intriguing story, but it actually looks to make proper use of the multi-dimensional technology.

The Saw movies have always been visceral viewing experiences and the 3D technology should only heighten the grisly nature of the seventh film. To its credit, the Saw 3D footage released so far has actually avoided the lame 3D trick shots that have plagued the promos for this week's big release, Resident Evil: Afterlife - and that is genuinely inspiring.

Saw 3D arrives in 2D and 3D theaters in the U.S. on October 29th, 2010.
