Warning: spoilers ahead for Savage Spider-Man #4!

Peter Parker is trying out a new suit as the Savage Spider-Man. But while wearing it has unleashed his true potential as a warrior, it may come at the cost of his humanity.

Spider-Man's life has been pretty crazy lately, as he seeks to stop a power-enhancing drug from turning people into mindless drones. Unfortunately, Spider-Man was infected with the drug himself, which reacted negatively with his DNA. He was turned into a half man-half spider hybrid monster that was quickly controlled by Baron Zemo. After a brief time under the villain's control, Spider-Man managed to shed this monster form like an outer skin and emerged from it looking like Peter Parker.

Unfortunately, he wasn't the Peter Parker fans are familiar with. He was more cold, calculating, and dangerously menacing with a merciless perspective. In his efforts to stop Zemo, Peter constructs a new suit in Savage Spider-Man #4 by Joe Kelly and Gerardo Sandoval. Once again armed with organic web shooters, Peter puts this suit on and infiltrates Zemo's compound to stop him. Without his usual compassion, Peter's suit sheds the superhero aesthetic, opting for tactical function which allows him to get inside Zemo's operation and truly bring the hurt.

This suit is reminiscent of the outfit Sam Fisher wore in the video game series Splinter Cell, which makes a lot of sense, given the focus on stealth and close-quarters combat. Sneaking into Zemo's lair, Spider-Man eliminates his guards one by one, utilizing his enhanced agility and strength to their fullest. The suit has a militaristic edge, with a sleek black design and what appears to be armor on his shoulders and knees. There even seem to be utility belts around his waist and thigh, drawing on the visual tropes of the '90s 'grim and gritty' comics. This Spider-Man isn't the one concerned with webbing up criminals and rescuing cats from trees, but quickly and efficiently beating down everyone between him and his overall target.

Spider-Man's 'savage' costume does a great job of showing how his heroic persona is being subsumed under his new identity. Some of his classic webbing remains, but it's mostly covered with armor, and his friendly lenses have been turned into multiple 'eyes.' The black chest and white spider logo bring to mind the Venom symbiote - another costume that brought out the worst in Peter - while red webbing adds to the sense of predatory violence. With his clinical approach to battle robbing him of the things that make him a true hero, Spider-Man has donned a savage new costume - one which communicates his new focus on brutality and lack of compassion for his prey.
