The past few years have been something of a golden era when it comes to television shows getting revivals. Long-dead series like Arrested Development24, and Gilmore Girls have all been brought back to life in one way or another, with dozens of other shows getting some version of a similar treatment. It looks as if 2017 won't stop the trend, either. Prison Break is already set to return, and late in 2015 we learned the groundbreaking Cartoon Network series Samurai Jack will be returning to screens as well.

While a movie based on the character still seems to be stuck in development hell, the final season of the series will be coming to Adult Swim next month. First premiering back in 2001, it's been 10 years since the fourth season of the show aired. The story centers around a samurai named Jack tasked with stopping the evil demon Aku. While it begins in feudal Japan, a time portal eventually send the action to a bizarre, dystopian future where culture and technology from across various time periods and civilizations is strewn. Following a recently-released teaser and behind-the-scenes video, we know have our first full look at Jack back in action.

Today, Adult Swim dropped the first trailer for the upcoming limited season along with a synopsis for the show. You can check out the trailer above and read the synopsis below:

It's been 50 years since we saw Samurai Jack and time has not been kind to him. Aku has destroyed every time portal and Jack has stopped aging, a side effect of time travel. It seems he is cursed to just roam the land for all eternity.

Samurai Jack Season 5 2017

There's a lot we want to see in the new season, and it looks like we'll get most of it. The animation style and mix of different eras of weapons looks to follow up the original series, but the show doesn't pick up where it left off. It's been five decades since we last saw Jack, and he hasn't aged a day. Aku, meanwhile, is still causing chaos, which looks to lead to a lot of self-flaggelating from Jack. The new series is set to explore much more mature themes than its predecessor, thanks in part to the move to Adult Swim, so Jack's sense of shame and anger will probably be front and center. There's no word yet, however, on how many of the original cast and crew will be returning.

We know series creator Gendy Tartakovsky will be executive producing, though how much he's involved beyond that is unknown. Many of the other seasons were written and directed by him, but he may be turning those duties over. It's safe to assume Phil Lamar will return as Jack, but sadly Aku will have to be replaced. His original voice actor, Mako, died during the production of Avatar: The Last Airbender, immortalized in one of the series' saddest episodes. From the sound of it, his costar Grey DeLisle, who voiced Azula on the series and Asajj Ventress on The Clone Wars (not to be confused with Tartakovsky's Clone Wars), is the voice of the warrior taunting and fighting Jack throughout the trailer. With the premiere fast approaching, we should learn a lot more soon.
