It would seem half of the headlines these days are about Avatar or Sam Worthington, with the other half about who will play Captain America. Now, the Australian action star shared some thoughts on an Avatar sequel and his upcoming project, The Texas Killing Fields during his press tour for Clash of the Titans. There are some genuinely interesting moments quoted over at ScreenCrave.

“We have discussed Avatar 2. He [Cameron] had brought up ideas even when we were filming it. He would have ideas that would relate to what we were filming in the first one. Obviously, we’re not going to go into that until Jim finds himself a challenge. He’s not the type of man who just goes into movies lightly, he’s not just going to do a sequel to make money. But also, we know that it’s been embraced by audiences so we know we’re definitely probably going to undertake another one. But it’s up to Jim to find the challenge to push himself. Avatar 2 has to push the boundaries like Avatar 1 did.”

This is some great material for dissection. One aspect of filmmaking I love is how ideas present themselves at any moment. It’s not strange to hear about directors coming up with sequel ideas mid-production. The Hangover is a good example. Avatar really is Cameron’s passion project, and not moving forward until the director finds the right story is the only way to go. He has already mentioned this in a few ways, even contemplating a trilogy at one point.

It will be interesting to see the approach to his first sequel since one of the best follow-up films of all time, Terminator 2: Judgment Day. To say the sequel has to push the boundaries of the first Avatar is an obvious comment, but sparks some thought. They are going to try and make it bigger and better, but what will it take to do that? Is it really even possible? Worthington’s money comment that could generate some harsh reactions, considering the updates regarding re-releases and Blu-Ray shenanigans. Let’s just hope they don’t rush this sequel or it could be out before we even get our 3D televisions. Maybe Cameron should wait until we can make 4D feature films.

With all the action films Sam Worthington has starred in, it was only a matter of time before he branched out to other genres. Luckily, he will not be following in the footsteps of Gerard Butler and jump into the pool’s shallow end with romantic comedies. Though he’s getting dangerously close with the romantic drama Last Night (2010), starring alongside Keira Knightley and Eva Mendes.

“In Texas Fields I play a cop that’s inspired by real events [and it’s] about murders that went down in Texas City. I play a guy who was a real cop, it’s like an amalgamation of stories but it’s inspired by these horrific events that happened down there.”

Confused? Me too. I’m not sure that made much sense. Starring alongside Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen), they make an appealing pair of action stars heading to drama where action won’t be totally absent considering the “horrific events.” Filming begins as soon as the Australian star’s promotional campaign for Clash of the Titans ends.

  1. I can not imagine Sam ever doing a romantic comedy. Even in real life he is the ultimate Aussie badass and reminds me of alot of people (i'm Australian). Gerard Butler needs to get back to action like 300. Gamer doesn't count.

  2. Um, what is this is a remake of? I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with the 1984 film The Killing Fields. That movie was set in Cambodia and has nothing to do with the plot of the film described above.

  3. Thanks Crom Crom. Fixed. No idea why I mixed that up.

  4. Check out Sam’s performance in Dirty Deeds. While not a romantic comedy as such, it does allow for some levity despite the subject. A ‘top bloke’ as we say in Oz. Bring on Avatar 2.

  5. They are filming the movie with him in it right now called Texas Killing Fields or (The Fields). Its being filmed literally right next to my house in Amite, Louisiana. Pretty cool

  6. It’s a shame we couldn’t entice them to film in Texas. I’m not sure if Texas City is a Louisiana town, anyone can enlighten me on that one? Avatar was great, I’d pay to see a number 2 with Sam again.

    • Filmed in Texas? I don’t know about that.

  7. I think it’s kinda a sham how they are planning to release alternate releases. Are we that dumb? Lets all go pay to see the same movie again with just a bit of new footage here and there.

  8. They aren’t filming it in Texas because League City (the town the events actually happened in) has changed alot since the late 80’s early 90’s. The louisianna town it is filming in resembles what it actually looked like back then.

    • I grew up in League City and I can assure you the town portrayed in the movie looks nothing like that now nor in the past. Louisiana is swampland whereas the League City/Texas City area is coastal prairie near Galveston.
