Sam Rockwell to Play Cowboys and Aliens

When Robert Downey Jr. had to step out of the starring role in Jon Favreau’s Cowboys and Aliens, I became slightly concerned that the movie might not work or sell as well without him as the bankable lead. Over the past few months my concerns have vanished as Favreau and co. have added star after star to fill the void.

First we found out Daniel Craig would be taking over the lead role of Zeke Jackson, followed by the notable addition of Olivia Wilde. Then the movie got a heck of a lot more star power when Favreau confirmed through Twitter that Harrison Ford joined Cowboys and Aliens as well.

While Favreau couldn’t get his Iron Man 2 star, he did just get an Iron Man 2 co-star in the form of Sam Rockwell who Heat Vision is now exclusively reporting has also joined the cast. Rockwell will play Doc, a bar owner who joins Zeke Jackson on the hunt for aliens.

The character was originally a smaller role designed for a heavy set man but when writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci discovered Rockwell was interested, they re-wrote the role a bit to give him more screentime.

I’m very excited at the idea of these actors playing cowboys, working together to fight… aliens. With Favreau at the helm, the cast involved and the writing team behind Star Trek working the screenplay, I think we have a very entertaining movie awaiting us next summer.

Cowboys and Aliens is a DreamWorks and Universal production set in the 1800s where Cowboys team up with Native Americans to combat a common unearthly foe. The story is an adaptation of the Cowboys and Aliens graphic novel series by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg.

What do you think about the latest cowboy entering the fray?

  1. I’m kinda looking forward to this. :)

  2. Harrison Ford is probably the main reason i’m seeing this.

  3. More RDJ and Rockwell? I’m in!

    • No RDJ – Daniel Craig took his part when Downey dropped out

  4. I am not interested anymore. I am really not a Sam Rockwell fan at all. I used to ‘love’ Harrison Ford but after the last Indiana Jones movie and seeing how bad he looked and acted. I felt ill. Daniel Craig is the only actor that has a truly active audience draw right now.
This film is opening with some other big movies though. Harry Potter and Captain America. I have my doubts on whether the actors involved can draw the fans in. The cast is just not very impressive and all of Ford’s movies – lately – are terrible. Let’s hope it has something better to add to it than Sam Rockwell. He is just not a star caliber or fantastic actor either.

    • Harrison Ford’s Crystal Skull did earn over $300 million. That’s more than I make in a year. And from a bad movie, starring a man who you claim has no box office draw.. that’s a pretty impressive number, wouldn’t you say?

Sam Rockwell’s stock will obviously skyrocket when IM2 takes over the box office. It’s hard to imagine one of the stars of one of the hottest movies of this summer, will not at least be noticed by audiences.

Olivia Wilde was Maxim’s hottest woman in 2009. There is a not-small part of the population that will see any movie she’s in. Particularly if there’s cowboys and aliens involved too.

Daniel Craig is widely considered the best James Bond since Sean Connery (and better, by some).

And you say that the above actors WON’T draw audiences in?

The competition is also a non-issue.
Harry Potter is not a competitor for this movie. Two different demographics.
Captain America is. But they won’t open on the same weekend. Remember how well IM and Dark Knight both did? They opened over the same summer, too. Neither of them were hurt financially by the other (in fact, the opposite is most likely true).

      • The Crystal Skull made money because it was ‘Indiana Jones’ did people truly go see it to try to watch 65 year old Harrrison Ford try to make it through an action scene? It ruined all of the other fantastic performances of Ford as a great action Hero for me. I don’t care if it made $300 million or not. His last 3 movies stunk. I saw them, pathetic acting attempts. The whole thing was just truly upsetting for me to see that’s all.I did not say I did not love Ford.
As for Rockwell, it doesn’t matter what movie he is in right now (IM 2). That is a nice thing to put on your resume, but it doesn’t change you to a class A actor. That is done by learning how to act. Most people can only name 4 other movies he has been in , yet he has been in at least 50 or more as a supporting actor. He is 43 years old. He should be a draw already if he is going to be.
As for Olivia Wilde , most women don’t really care that she was Maxims hottest woman of 2009. She could pose naked on a Twinkie box and I wouldn’t buy it. That is for you guys alone, she is eye candy to draw you men in. So, that isn’t even a valid arguement for me – sorry – moving along now.
As for Craig,I did say that he could draw an audience to a movie. That he was the only one who could. I did not say anything negative about Daniel Craig. He is a wonderful actor.
As for the movie’s competition, having Harry Potter and Captain America open 2 and 1 week before your movie comes out is pretty much a losing bet. Harry Potter might be a different genre – but this is the last book and it has staying power for months. Everyone is waiting to see what Captain America does also. As for Iron Man and The DK. Iron Man premiered on May 6 and The DK in June . That was 1 whole month difference. Both had time to succeed.

        • Ok. If your argument is that you, personally, do not find those actors a draw, fine. No one can argue that.

But you didn’t. You were trying to say that none of the actors (aside from Craig) currently cast are an “audience” draw, which you are obviously not the entire audience (or even main the demographic, honestly) which they are aiming for.

I understand if you aren’t interested in the movie. But don’t try to project your own lack of enthusiasm on the entire movie-going population. Personally, I’m excited for it. And I doubt I’m in the minority here.

And as far as competing against Captain America.. that’s still over a year off and neither have even started shooting yet. So we’ll see when they actually release.

  5. this is definetly one of my most anticpated movies of next year for sure
