Sam Raimi’s Date With Mary Jane To Talk Spider-Man 4

Published 5 years ago by , Updated August 22nd, 2013 at 4:15 pm,

Last month we got some big news surrounding Spider-Man 4. Among the scheduling changes for the upcoming Marvel movies, we also were told that Spider-Man 4 would hit theaters May 6, 2011. The other unsurprising update that made a splash was that Raimi really wants Kirsten Dunst to return as Mary Jane Watson.

From what we’ve heard, Dunst has been hesitant about returning for another installment, perhaps because of some negative fan feedback about her being cast into the role in the first place which still hasn’t died down.

Raimi is taking it into his own hands and is reportedly set to meet with Kirsten Dunst to talk about her return for the next Spidey adventure. In a group interview last week, Raimi discussed the current situation:

“I’m hoping that she is going to come aboard, and I’ve got a meeting coming up with her… I think she would like to. But I don’t want to speak on behalf of her.”

The folks at Sci-Fi Wire had the opportunity to speak with Raimi about his upcoming Drag Me to Hell horror movie, Evil Dead 4 and what we may expect of the style for Spider-Man 4. Sci-fi Wire raised the point of the darker trend in superhero movies we’ve seen in The Dark Knight and Watchmen and asked whether or not we’d be seeing a darker and Edgier Spider-Man this time around. Raimi’s edited response:

“Whatever it is, I think will be a direct result of the best style to bring about our writer’s screenplay. And as soon as I read that, I will know what that is. Edgy could be a direction, but I don’t think it will be applied without really understanding the character’s journey from the inside out first and then figuring out the best way to bring that about.

And then, as far as the other influences, making it different from the other films, … I hope we don’t react to these very good and sometimes bad superhero movies around us. I hope that we just [look] ever deeper into the truth of who Peter Parker really is—as a human being and the unique character, and that we celebrate that, which is a lot of the reason I want to make this next picture. I still believe I have an understanding of Peter Parker as the character that I have not quite put onto the screen yet.

I’m not talking about Tobey Maguire’s performance, which I very much love; I’m talking about my understanding of the character. I feel like sometimes a kid at the piano recital. And I know this piece really well. I know it by heart. And I sometimes get it right, and sometimes I don’t. But I want a chance to really play it the way I feel it. So I’m hoping it’s a really good screenplay and I can express the character through that.”

By his piano recital analogy, I’m guessing he’s referring Spider-Man 3 when saying he sometimes doesn’t get it right. Other than that, we get nothing new. The script isn’t done and Raimi isn’t committing to a style of film.

The good news is that Raimi will have full control over this movie unlike its predecessor which will hopefully give us another quality movie like the first two and not a mess like the third installment.

As for the Mary Jane character, I don’t know what else they can explore in her relationship with Peter Parker and I don’t think the fans really care about the plot revolving around them. Personally, I don’t want them to even try – I’d like to see the story focused on the villains and Peter Parker trying to save the day this time around.

What do you think of Kirsten Dunst returning?

  1. darren,

my bad, i keep forgeting this site doesnt allow profanity

  2. That’s ok, but tell me something: why the profanity? I mean above all things it doesn’t profit a person’s interlect. What do you think?

  3. darren,

its just the way i am, i was raised that way, but its not like i go around and drop “f bombs” all the time(well sometimes, lol)

  4. I don’t suppose you mean your parents Matt I mean you just said that that is the way you were raised. I am sort of shocked if that is the case. But do you like it Matt?

  5. yeah i like it, doesnt bother me at all, i mean i may sound like a jerk, but hey im a redneck what can i say i like cursing, like getting drunk(every now and then) and i like huntin, its just my way of living, besides even the most respectable of person curses for example christian bale lol

  6. Matt I sort of feel( I don’t want to sound bossy or anything) concerned in a sort of way. Let’s just say concerned as a friend to let you know that their is a much better life than that to live. You may not think it but it is not a good practice at all buddy. Do you ever consider change?

  7. “better” is more opinionated, it may not be your ideal way of life, but its fine by me, and to be honest man its sounds as if your talking down to my parents and my family, im completely happy w/ my life.

  8. Hey, don’t get me wrong man, please I’m just trying to get you to see something in a different ‘light’ and give you a little heads up on this thing that you may call ‘the norm’. I didn’t in any way try to attack your parents or family. My sincere apologies. Please forgive me.

  9. its cool yo, but maybe there is a “better” way of life, like i said its all comes down to who your talking to, like my brother hes rich and i have never seen a person be a bigger jerk to people, im sure that having all kinds of money and having the oppurtunity to buy whatever you like is nice its just not for me, but lke i said my brother is a great example of why i dont wanna be rich, besides i see them w/ butlers, maids, drivers, and etc., im much more happy knowing that i can do the work myself not have anyone else do it for me.

but i still got my morals: i dont curse when im talking to females, i dont hit females, i help people when i have the oppurtunity(at least i try) and the people i care for.

  10. ps: to add to my list of moral: i dont drink on sunday b/c and i have my religion

  11. Know what, that’s really nice to hear, you know? I’m the type of person who doesn’t curse, nor drinks alcohol, nor hits females, and I do help people from time to time in charity work and in my own personal Christian life. I mean I really strive to do what’s good in this world for the benefit of other people and myself to please God because I know it is the right thing to do. You know, ‘Darren’ does mean ‘He who upholds the good’. What does Matt mean?

  12. yeah im a christian as well, but you know what i have no clue what my name means, its short for matthew, and you know what theres nothing wrong w/ drinking alchohol now and then(as long as your the legal age of course) as long as it doesnt become an addiction

  13. ps: i dont think the administators of this site like the fact that we are getting WAY off topic, so if ya wanna keep talking look me up on facebook and we can talk there

  14. That is amazing! That is great! I’ll look up Matthew and tell you what it means, ok? I don’t think that Mr. Vic will have a problem with us talking but I’ll look you up on facebook. Keep talking, ok?

  15. sure we lets keep talking, just chnange the subject

  16. Your not feeling ashamed are you Matt?(chuckle)

  17. nope, just a little bit annoyed, you can say your concerned about the way i live my life all you want, im fine w/ it

  18. Ok, I understand, I’m completely cool with you being a little annoyed. We’ll talk about that on facebook hopefully. But back in action now; what is it that you don’t like about Spidey3.

  19. well…where do i start? hmmmm i thought the acting was awful(other than jk simmons as Jameson), plot holes, toooo much MJ, dancing “emo” peter, and venom was wasted this is all of course my opinion.

on the other hand there was some great action like the fight w/ peter and harry in the begining and the fight w/ sandman when he was getting slammed against the subway train.

ill admit to enjoying the film, but it was dissappointing considering how good “spiderman 2″ was

  20. Well, let me start. No 1. The acting was not awful, if you would notice they produce real emotions and captivate the audience.

No 2. That’s the story man. Without MJ the story is not a love story.

No 3. Dancing Peter was sort of wacky, points for you on that one.

No 4. Topher did a great job in portraying Eddie and Venom was not wasted. He just wasn’t liked by the audience.

No 5. The action was HOT. The best was with Harry and Peter.

It was better than S2 and S1.

  21. I say take out MJ and put in the black cat focus on her relationship with Spidey

  22. Hey Blaze, what an idea! I kinda like that one, but MJ will have to fall in there somehow because Peter will have to go back to his one true love.

  23. By the way Matt K, hey buddy! Your name is of Hebrew origin and means Gift of God, and that you are- remember that bud.

  24. Darren I got an idea for that one no never mind her being a clone for hydro is too cartoony

  25. Ha ha, very funny. How about this:

Let Sam Raimi find a way to bring back Venom in the mix, cause Venom to be much more aggravated with Peter but waits for a really unsuspecting moment to avenge Eddie, probably in the last few minutes of S4 with a surprise appearance from Carnage: both of them as a team for S5.

Meanwhile, the Hobgoblin is in progress. That prisoner who escapes in the comics finds Norman and Harry Osborn’s work of art and masters it, but only Spidy can stop him so he wants to kill Spidey……

Or bring back Otto Octavias aka Doc Ock. He gets amnesia not knowing what to do with life goes in persuit for help from someone to get those arms off, gets captured but busts out and that should get him real mad! He goes into hiding- again……

While Dr. Curt Connors trys to grow his arm, thus experimenting very badly turns him into THE LIZARD!!!!!!…. but is so overwhelmed by its evil needs a partner; trys to find his ole time buddy Ock. He convincingly persuades Ock and walla!

    A new story is born.

  26. Hey Vic, give a reply on what you think, please.

  27. I think they should move on to new villains, preferably ONE.

    Vic

  28. I think so too Vic

  29. One alone? That might just kill the drama guys. Come on, every Spidey fan is anticipating lots of villains these days (thanks to Raimi). Spidey can take ‘em on. But I guess that your opinions count just as mine does. But I think my idea is way cool. Vic, is it possible that Sony Corp or Marvel Studios can recieve my recent comment for analysing from Screenrant?
