Sam Raimi last talked about Spider-Man 4 early last month, where he gave us details about such things as whether he was planning both the fourth and fifth Spider-Man films at the same time (he’s not), as well as how difficult it is to go back to a franchise after time has passed.
Today, in an interview with our friends over at Cinematical, Raimi talked some more about Spider-Man 4, and went a bit more specifically into his plans and goals for the fourth movie, including how it will differ from the disaster that was Spider-Man 3. Here’s what he had to say:

“I learn lessons on every single picture I make… I learned a lot on [Drag Me To Hell], about timing, and that you don’t have to give up any character at the expense of horror. It’s just an excuse that maybe I’ve used in the past. As far as Spider-Man, I’ve learned a lot of lessons about what people didn’t like and missteps that I’d made. But I learned those lessons on the previous two, I was just a little quieter about them. I made a lot of mistakes, and it’s part of the reason I so want to make this next story of Peter Parker.”
“I really think I know in my heart who the character is… I would like one more chance at it [that character]. [With] the Spider-Man films, I’ve made mistakes, but I really do look at them as things that I’ve learned, and hope that when I apply what I’ve learned to this next one, I really make a film that people enjoy and is really true to the character in a fresh, original way. That’s my goal.”
Even with the horrible way Raimi handled Spider-Man 3 (folks – he was the director, it was his movie, and it is his fault it sucked. There’s no excuse…), these latest thoughts from him just further solidify the fact that he really does love the character and is willing to put his all into bringing us another Spider-Man movie that’s on par with the first two.
It’s good to hear that Raimi has taken a look at what he did wrong with Spider-Man 3, admitted his mistakes, and is planning on doing what he can to make sure the same mistakes aren’t repeated in Spider-Man 4. He needs to carefully plan this one and not, for example, rush into such things as having a villain in there just because the fans love them so much (*cough* Venom! *cough*).
Whatever you do, Mr. Raimi, no more Mary Jane talking about her bloody career problems!
What do you make of Sam Raimi’s plans so far for Spider-Man 4? Are you glad he’s apparently learned from his past mistakes?
Spider-Man 4 is planned to be released on May 6th 2011.

I agree Ross…I don’t wanna here MJ whine about her failing career and I can’t wait to see “Drag Me to Hell”
so hes askin for redemption?
what gives?
I didn’t think S3 was that bad..it had bad parts but overall I enjoyed it and have watched it many times….MJ’s career storyline and the whole Peter doing the Saturday Night Fever thing was awful but I just skip those parts like they never happened…The glory of DVD…
bring him back,i loved the first two and it was not his fualt the producers pushed venom into the film,i hope that we do get a chance to see the lizard, and carnage, and i would love to see doc ock come back but the thing they really need to focus on and this goes for every film ever made is story.work on story, dialog, and character development.
“I made a lot of mistakes, and it’s part of the reason I so want to make this next story of Peter Parker.”
I think that was part of the problem with SM3. It was TOO much about Parker. It was Parker fighting harry, not Spiderman. I agree that parker is obviously a big part of the story but come up with a new angle. Yes, we know he struggles with being Spiderman. We got that in the second pic. We don’t need beat over the head with it in every movie. And for god’s sake quit having MJ be nothing but a whiny, wimpering damsel in distress.
I didnt mind Spiderman 3… especially as a midway movie in the franchise, its not like it was the send off film like Matrix Revolutions
All he has to do is make it one villian, have a nice emotional, tragic back story to that villian-Thats it.
I felt that he over complicated the plot of S3. And I agree , MJ is super whinny. I would prefer SAm to go with Gwen as even when she is in distress, she it not whinny-LOL.
no excuses this time around Raimi.
I agree w/ FRED on that there should only be one villian this time around
I think Spiderman 4 will be fine. Personally my opinion is that Raimi purposely screwed it up at least sub consciously just to spit in the faces of the people shoving Venom down his throat. I am a huge Venom fan, but I’d of rather never had him in a film than get what we got. Personally if your doing a comic book movie you should never do it about a villain you don’t like because your gonna screw up. Either you’ll make a bad film by not doing justice to the character or you’ll make a decent film, but piss off comic fans because you changed the character in to something you would prefer.
Its funny how fans seem to forget so fast how good movies are. Just cuz Spider-Man 3 wasnt as good as 1 and 2 doesnt mean it sucked. And now you have fans screaming reboot. If the next Batman film isnt as good as TDK are people gonna start asking for a reboot? Im glad people on here are saying that Spider-Man 3 wasnt that bad, cuz it wasnt.
Yeah, I’ll probably catch Drag Me To Hell in theaters. I’ve always wished he had saved Venom for another one. (the 4 in this case). Not having Venom in Spider-Man 3 would have been much better for fans of the comics and the films. I felt like it was an insult to the character…
Spiderman 3 was that bad
Was *not that bad
Oscar! sorry to say Spiderman 3 was that bad. It was a horrible film. It had good parts, but they were way over shadowed by the god awful parts. The scene where Sandman was coming to life was beautiful, but was so over shadowed and ruined by the majority of the film that it’s heart breaking.
3 was pretty bad, it was vastly over complicated with 3 different villains and poor casting choices. The story was all over the place and audiences couldn’t resonant with any of the new characters, let alone emo-Peter Parker.
[Topher Grace as Eddie Brock... really?!!?!?! I'd like to strike the individual who made that suggestion.]
What exactly does emo mean? Seems like people on the internet like to toss that term around a lot when they don’t like a character. Never really understood it.
To answer that, I’ll refer to MADtv [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7IxliAPjAk]
Think… My Chemical Romance.
Carl Lee,
man, I freakin love that video LOL
I loved Spider Man 3…
i don’t think peter was emo in that film… he seemed pretty happy… i’m from new york myself and i like to do that walk from saturday night fever(the opening scene). I dance it up a bit as well…he made that anoxeric girl make him more cookies and stuff. I liked that peter a bit more… tired of his whining. If i were peter I’d go out with someone with a little more meat… and not so annoying. She’d still be a redhead though and she wouldn’t know my real identity… only know me as spider-man and ill know her as my red-headed booty call. Also i’d demand a fee from somebody for helping out the police with all this crime… someone’s gotta pay granny’s bills right? but that’s just me…
I don’t know if I will give it a chance or not 3 was so bad 1. venom was way to small ( should have been the size of someone like Brock Lesner)
2. a half hour wasted with aunt may
3.MJ whinning
if Carnage is in it I will see it
Venom was a little small yes, but didn’t need to be Brock Lesnar size just bigger than he was. I mean lets be a little realistic shall we.
OBJECTIVES FOR SM4: #1 LOSE THE AUNT MAY CHARACTER, YOU ABSOLUTELY DO NOT NEED HER OR ANY MORE MENTION OF UNCLE BEN, THAT PLOTLINE HAS BEEN BEATEN TO A PULP. #2 LOSE KIRSTEN DUNST, I HAVE NO DESIRE TO SEE MJ SCREAMING PART 4, BRING BACK THE GWEN STACY CHARACTER AND WORK WITH THAT. #3 TAKE IT BACK TO ONE VILLIAN WITH A GREAT BACKSTORY. #4 BRING THE MOVIE IN LEAN AND TIGHT AT 1HR 45M, SM3 WAS 2HR 15M WHICH WAS 30M TO LONG.
I guess my problem with Spider-Man 4 is going to be that there’s no GOOD way to bring Harry back and tie up that plot line THE RIGHT WAY.
It’ll be interesting to see how he picks up the pieces of this universe that sort of fell apart during 3. I am in the group that thinks 3 wasn’t a bad movie, but I disagree heavily with some of the story arcs, namely: Harry’s and well… Harry’s. Even during 3, it was going so well the way these two wound up duking it out, the animosity, the hatred, and yet their bond of friendship… it was just so well done they could have expanded this plot into the entire movie itself. But the end elicited a complete double-take. It was like the Indy vs. Sword-Guy duel. Build-up build-up build-up and then BAM ending with zero effort on anyone’s part.
It would be nice to drop MJ and hook Peter up with Gwen. After all, in the comics, Spidey accidentally killed Gwen and wound up with MJ, why not just flip it and have Spider-Man 4 open with the death of MJ and Peter turning to Gwen.
LIZARD NEEDS TO BE IN THE FILM..EVEN STAN LEE SAID IT WAS A OBVIOUS CHOICE
What INK & Fred said..
K.I.S.S. = Keep It Simple, Stupid
Less is more.
Etc. Etc.
I won’t even watch the movie if they drop MJ won’t even bother to spend my money on it.
i like the spider-man movies, but couldn’t they have made peter less of a little girl. honetly? all he does is cry and complain the whole movie (all 3), then he kicks some bad guy butt(which is normally really cool), then whines again
I love the first 2 Spidey movies. I thought they were well created, fun and left me wanting more Spidey. I was never a fan of Dunst as MJ, but I am ok with her in a 4th film IF her role is extremely limited. 5-10 minute screen time tops.
As for Spidey 3, I didn’t think it was HORRIBLE (with emo Peter and Topher Grace as Venom being the obvious exceptions), but I thought that too much was trying to be crammed into one movie. Peter’s relationship with Harry AND Sandman would have been more than enough to have made a great movie. They could have made Venom a phenomenal 4th film, with the opening scene to S3 being at the end of S3-meteor falls to earth and the symbiote hitches a ride on Peter’s bike. A whole movie to delve into Venom and the symbiote would have made a great movie that fans would have been CLAMORING to see. I think both Sony and Raimi lost a lot of good will from the Spidey fans with forcing Venom into the movie.
Will I see Spider-Man 4? You bet I will because Spidey is one of my all-time favorite comic book characters and the first 2 films were fantastic. I’m willing to give Raimi another shot to make a great Spidey flick.
