World of Warcraft Sam Raimi Sam Raimi Not Directing World of Warcraft Movie

The last time we reported on the World of Warcraft movie (more than two years ago), we shared an interview with director Sam Raimi, who talked about his love for the game and how the film would include monsters and magic spells. In the very same interview, Raimi also mentioned that he was considering working on Oz: The Great and Powerful as his next project.

As we all now know, Raimi did indeed pick Oz as his next project - Disney released the first trailer for the film last week - but that left some unanswered questions about the status of the World of Warcraft movie. One of those questions was answered in a recent interview with Raimi at Comic-Con, where the director revealed that he’s no longer involved with the film.

Raimi explained that when he signed on for Oz – courtesy of Crave Online - the studio decided to move on without him:

“Actually, they don’t have me directing ‘World of Warcraft’ anymore because when I took the ‘Oz’ job, they had to move on to another director. They had to start making it.”

The question is, who is the replacement director? We haven’t heard about any other directors vying for the position, or even an official announcement from Activision Blizzard that Raimi was no longer involved in the project. Could it be that the World of Warcraft film has entered the seventh circle of development hell? (After all, the movie has been in some form of development since 2006.)

Raimi is one of only a handful of Hollywood directors who has proven he can turn big-budget projects into big box office returns, so it’s hard to imagine Blizzard finding someone else as capable to bring the company’s famous online role-playing game to the big screen.

That being said, I’m sure there are plenty of young directors out there who would love to take a crack at such a high-profile project. Either way, Activision Bilzzard should make a decision about how it wants to proceed with the film soon. In recent financial reports, the company has said that World of Warcraft subscribers are decreasing. Naturally, this begs the question – what good is a movie based on a branded property if nobody cares about the brand?

Oh wait, this is Hollywood. If a Stretch Armstrong movie is still happening, then a World of Warcraft movie is definitely still happening.

What do you think of Raimi’s departure from the film? Were you excited about a World of Warcraft movie to begin with?

  1. i didnt even know they were making a WoW film i think they should just cut there losses with the project though it will probably be a huge fail

  2. I dont know why but I’m kinda glad.

  3. HAHAHAHAH!

  4. where the director revealed that he’s no longer involved with the film.

  5. they should have waited,idiots !

  6. THANK GOD! Raimi ruined the sword of truth series for me, Im so releived he won’t ruin wow

  7. This movie has been ‘announced’ since 2006. I am convinced we’ll never see it…

  8. Really a wow movie? If it ever gets made its gonna be a total stink fest.

  9. Its sad that Raimi’s no longer directing it. But I’m very satisfied that he went for the Oz project. He really picked a winner in James Franco, an extremely talented actor. If only D.C. would choose him to be The Flash then I’ll be a happy camper. I’m sure other directors will pick up this project. Put Guillermo del Toro or Peter Jackson on the case! There’s some serious money to be made with this film!

  10. Dear Hollywood,

Look at all these comments above mine. Not a good thing to say. Not one. THIS is the level of trust we have in your “adaptations”. Just give up and go home.

    Best,
    Sawyer

  11. Well Vivendi is really missing out on a great opportunity. They have enough great back story to turn this into an epic trilogy (if done right) and with subs sagging as of late, this could have been a way to revitalize their franchise and renew interest in it.

  12. let’s see… WoW subscribers decreasing? Yes, they ALWAYS decrease in the year leading up to an expansion… which is in the next 6 months. The numbers generally go right back up.

Oh, and the decreasing numbers are an insignificant portion of the total subscription base. however, it’s interesting to note that that small proportion of WoW’s subscribers who stopped playing is already more people than play most other online games. there are a HELL of a lot of WoW players.

    • I don’t know if I would call a 17-20% loss in subs to be “insignificant”

      • 17-20% of 10+ million still leaves several times over the max of other MMO’s. Instead of beings the pop of Georgia its now the population of Virginia

  13. I just wanted a small story. It would be one about a group of people who get together and decide to take down Edwin VanCleef in the Deadmines. It would be a nice introduction to the world and it could lead to more epic stories about the group in later movies.

  14. Raimi rules! But only in a hell where Peter Parker does the jiggalo dance.

  15. Whatever, Blizzard is just fine. All these haters, I don’t understand why so much hatred for a company that provides a product, no different then SW:ToR. Will you hate that game when (if) it becomes as big as WoW? I myself gave it a shot and after 3 months canceled my subscription (just like I did with Warhammer, DC, Etc) and found myself back enjoying WoW. I wasn’t looking for a replacement, just wanted to try something new but I did not develop this “hatred” for WoW. It’s a game, if you don’t like it, stop playing, simple.

  16. If not Sam Raimi, I think Peter Jackson MAY be GOOD choice.

    • +1 for Jackson

  17. its “Warcraft” movie , not world of warcraft ..
and i doubt we will ever see this movie

  18. Good news,I am looking forward to that.

  19. this game and the guide i bought are the best money ive ever spent lol i bought this guide http://09f009-8woqopp4gph3qu82rak.hop.clickbank.net/ anyone else got it? i rocks doenst it?

  20. i made a small chimp smoke cardboard cinamon

  21. How many million subscribers are there?
    How is that nobody?
