Sam Raimi Wants Kirsten Dunst

Published 5 years ago by , Updated August 22nd, 2013 at 3:32 pm,

Sam Raimi had a busy weekend – having to dish out information on the fourth installments of two popular franchises to the hungry press. As I wrote earlier, Raimi answered some questions on the future of the Evil Dead franchise, but he also clarified some stuff for Spider-Man 4.

It was just a few days ago when the official release date for Spider-Man 4 was announced along with the updated schedule for the next four films by Marvel Studios. Now, we have confirmation that a fifth movie is not currently being planned and therefore Spider-Man 4 & 5 are likely not to be shot at the same time as  was rumored to be a possibility last May.

“The writers, producers and I are working out what the story will be, but we haven’t been talking in terms of Part 4 and 5.” Raimi told MTV News. “I’ve read that [about 'Spider-Man 5’] also, but right now we’re just working on the story for ‘Spider-Man 4,’ just that one film.

As for who will drop the gloves with Spidey in the film – no word on who the villain or villains will be in the  but we do know that Raimi has an interest in Morbius from what he said in January.

“We’re definitely talking about working from all the material in the comic books and nothing [invented] outside of that, “Raimi continued. “All the characters or villain or villains, whatever we decide to do will be from Stan Lee’s creations or those that came after him.”

I think the idea of Morbius would help make for a darker themed and more realistic take on Spider-Man which is what we need after the third installment. I also still hold out hope that we’ll see The Lizard as the other villain. Morbius and the Lizard both have very similar origin stories and quite a bit of history together in the comics. Since we see Raimi referencing the material in the comic books, maybe we’ll see something like that.

As for major players involved with this project, Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire are signed on but Kirsten Dunst is not. When asked if they could write her out or write in another love interest, Raimi responded

“I can’t imagine making a ‘Spider-Man’ movie without Kirsten,” he said, seemingly contemplating the idea in his head with a long pause. “Of course it can be done because Spider Man has existed without the character of Mary-Jane but she’s one of my favorite parts and it would be a shame not to have her in the picture. I’m hoping she’ll be in it and I’m planning on having a story with her in it.”

I can go either way on this as I wasn’t a big fan of her character in the films and I’d much rather see a story getting away from that relationship as we got plenty of that (come to think of it, far too much – remember Emo-Peter Parker?) over the last three films, what else can they do?

What do you think about Spider-Man 4 and its potential villain line-up?

Spider-Man 4 hits theaters May 6, 2011.

  1. i dont mind dunst as MJ, but just dont focus the story on her we dont need another film where she is whining about her acting career, and then saying “..this isnt about you” when the film is about spiderman

  2. I alwasy saw the casting of Kirsten Dunst into Spider-man 1 as something of that she’s one of the hottest girls going around, lets put her in, instead of finding someone like how they did with Tobey. But, I do not mind Kirsten. Personally, I always thought Amy Smart would make a good MJ.

  3. carnage….

  4. @spidey

i would have loved to see carnage as the next villian until i saw what they did to venom, now i would rather see the lizard or kraven the hunter

  5. I would be fine with either Lizard or Morbius or both. It would also be fun to see Shocker get a cameo at the beginning of the film. Maybe just get busted quick by Spidey. I mean how much set-up does a guy with power gloves need?

Kirsten Dunst … not hot enough to be MJ from the comics but the casting didn’t bother me at the time. Of course I was just happy the movie was FINALLY being made after being promised every year since 1988 that it was coming out.

What did bother me is what others have said about the script focusing on her. I think it worked well in the first two movies but began to fall apart in the the third. I say enter Gwen as the new girlfriend and kill off MJ in the fourth. That would give Peter some heavy guilt to deal with don’t ya think?

  6. One thing…we don’t want Spider-man 3′n’a half!! All the boring stuff that weighed that movie down…Rami has to seriously look at what worked in the last 3 movies…then up the action..effects..stunts..and we must see Spider-Man more…less is more when it comes to too much dialogue…
What about previous villian returning..Doc Oc…Goblin…or Venom properly being given more time and development! Also the Lizard has been waiting in the wings for 3 movies so far…surely we can’t go through another one and he still hasn’t shown!!!

  7. Carnage is just Venom on crack…it’s been there, done that..there’s only so much you can do with the symbiotes and they are a small part of Spider-man’s universe, very one-dimensional IMO in terms of what they can do with the character, crazed psychopath with Spiderman’s powers..oh right that was Venom. They did not do Venom’s character justice in S3 but it’s been done…

I liked Dunst in S1 and S2 but not three. I think they should explore the Gwen Stacy and Professor Warren/Clone story arc from the AMazing SPiderman books in the 70′s..lots of cameos from other characters in that arc and it was very well done from a storyline POV…

  8. Hoooow abooout … killing the damn MJ character off altogether?

The first 2 Spider-Man flicks had a lot going for them, but everytime that ugly bint stuck her face into the camera, the films came to a screetching hold.

    Yes … I don’t like her.
    At all.

For me … the franchise is DEAD.

  9. Please, no Carnage or Venom – I want something that can sustain my suspension of belief, not destroy it.

  10. Sam needs to go out and find himself a real actress for the role of MJ, I always thought that was a huge miscast. SM 1 and 2 were great, they were fantastic, SM 3 totally too everything the first 2 set up and crapped all over it, IMO.

  11. Killing off the MJ character could be the best thing for the franchise..revitalize the SPiderman franchise and it would be a powerful story to put to film…The angst, the drama, the revenge…hey maybe Lizard could eat her for a snack..kind of soft and chewy on the outside with a crunchy center!! ;) Bring on Gwen Stacy or even the Black Cat or Silver Sable as a love interest…

  12. im with ya Rob, Michael Morbius goes Great with Dr.connors.

  13. I sincerely hope Spider- man 4 is a symbiote free zone .

  14. I have loved the franchise, each and every movie, and I think Spider-Man as a superhero is great. I, too, would love to see Kraven featured in one of the movies.

  15. I would love to see the Kingpin as the main antagonist vs. Justin Hammer(Silvermane) with the Scorpion, Rhino and Tombstone as the muscle with Spiderman in the middle trying to stop it all. I mean doesnt anyone want to see the classic villains. And since they’re two movies based one story arc it should be able to handle multiple villains. Spiderman has a much more impressive rouges gallery than just Venom and Carnage and they would do well to utilize it.

  16. If she sheds ONE tear,

    Whines even ONE little whimper,

Talks to Peter with that “Poor, Poor Peter voice…

I’m throwing my popcorn at the screen!

  17. @JessSayin’

Let me know what theater you’ll be going to, that would be hilarious … especially when you get your arse kicked by other movie goers. J/K :)

  18. My gut feeling over Spider-Man 3 was Raimi’s big F-U to sony. Think about it, he wanted to do his story but the Studio intervened and said they wanted Venom and so on. So, Raimi with all the toys at his disposal gave a subtle “screw with me, I’m gonna screw with you” to Sony. Kinda makes sense.

  19. if mj is not in it. I wouldn’t mind seeing some sparks between Peter & Betty but like everybody else I agree, the romance has to take a back seat. Better yet Peter & Betty could be thrust into a daily bugle situation together that is actually part of the main plot.

  20. I would love to see a Spidey film where Spidey catches villain after villain, starting with Rhino and ending with a sweet battle with Kraven. The first hour would be Spidey catching Rhino, Shocker, and Scorpion, with the Kingpin behind it all. The final battle would be the last hour, hour and 1/2, where Spidey is fighting Kraven. MJ can be in the first 10 minutes, AND THAT’S IT FOR HER! No frakking whiney dancing blubbering crap!

  21. RHINO!EXCELLENT CHARACTER!..MABEY TAKING SPIDEY IN A MORE GANGSTER-MOB TYPE STORY LIKE THE COMICS WOULD BE INTERESTING…JUST DON’T TRY AND GO ALL “DARK KNIGHT”….I JUST HOPE SAM & CO ARE SWITCHED ON FOR THIS NEXT MOVIE AND WE GET A CORKER!!!AFTER ALL..WE’VE BEEN WAITING LONG ENUFF FOR THE NEXT EDITION!
    MAKE MINE MARVEL

  22. @INK,
Oh dude! You have no idea what you just said..

I’m the guy that stood up right when that piece of crap movie, ‘Sphere’ ended and yelled:

“I have the power to forget this movie!”
(If you remember the premise of the film you’ll get it)

The ENTIRE audience that had to sit through that stupid, tedious film erupted in laughter.

  23. @John “Kahless” Taylor,

    DITTO!

  24. Dunst should have a very MINIMAL role, basically; “Peter, I got a job on a soap opera in Hollywood and I am leaving.” THAT’S IT!! I thought Dunst was HORRIBLE as MJ, she’s the Smallville Lana Lang on the big screen!!

S3 was easily the worst of the movies, but it wasn’t the worst superhero movie ever made, either. I think if Raimi returns to the S2 formula, this could get the franchise back on track. Although I am not sure how much longer Tobey can be Spidey without some CGI to de-age him. I’d love to see The Lilzard and Morbius as the next villain, with Kingpin in the shadows for a potential 5th movie with villains like Electro, Rhino, etc.

  25. I don’t think Raimi should be let anywhere near spiderman again after the **** that was S3. Yes some people don’t rate venom, but to me and lot of other fans he’s up there as one of the greatest villians of all time! On a proffesional level, how raimi let the script get on the screen is astonishing!

As for Kirsten, she was good in the first two movies, likeable if not desirable, but by S3 she looked worn out like too much partying, too much men and too much sniff etc….

Or it was the poor script making her that why!

I would be pro a new Mary jane

  26. Why is no one talking about Vulture? WAY better than Morbius. With Morbius, you have the fear that you’re mixing genres. In the first 2 SM films, Raimi was able to construct FANTASTIC over the top villains… try it again! I say Vulture or Scorpion… you can STILL have someone sucking the life out of people… and it won’t be Dunst!

  27. We had over-the-top villains last time around with shape-shifting Sandman and Venom – but if you’re looking for that, I think The Lizard fits the bill even more than Vulture.

The thing with Morbius is that he can help make the film darker and add a little suspense and mystery to the movie if done right – Also, he’s the no-brainer pairing with The Lizard which I think would make for a create Spider-Man film resurgence.

  28. I’m still thinking about Spider-Man 4,by the time it comes out it’s going to be almost a decade since the first movie, like Batman…a change of focus/director/cast would freshen things up…Sony are gambling here bringing back the old cast & crew…if it sucks…we might not see Spidey back for a long time!!!
Iron-Man has shown how Marvel movies should be made….and the way we got to see Tony Stark inside the suit was clever…mabey we could get a similar angle with Peter behind the mask.
I’m just getting the feeling that the makers of the next Spidey don’t really know what they’re doing now with the films so they’re sticking with the old guard!

  29. I would Love to see a Spider-Man 4 Movie also… I mean with the Lizard guy in it… That would be so cool… But in reality… I want to see “Evil Dead 4″ First… I mean Sam needs to make it 1st.. Bruce Cambell isnt getting any Younger now is he ???
“Evil Dead” is my Fav. Horror Movie to date… Please Sam??? Do another “Evil Dead” Movie soon… But please leave the comedy out of it… Do the 4th instalment like the 1st one was… with “Pure Horror”…
Sam you can do it… Im sure you can dude.. Your my Hero Sam… Please do it real soon… Larry… :-)
