spider man 4 villains Sam Raimi Discusses Spider Man 4 Villains

Spider-Man 4 has been receiving plenty of buzz in recent times with announcements and confirmations of it going into production next year for a 2011 release. On top of that, we’ve had countless reports and speculation about what storylines it may follow, the start of development for Spider-Man 5 & 6, and discussions of what villains will be the focus of the fourth installment in the super successful superhero franchise.

MTV spoke with Sam Raimi and got the director to discuss a bit about the villains of Spider-Man 4 and the results of a fan poll they ran on the site which saw The Lizard and Carnage come out on top as the most desired villains, with the highest percentages from an unknown number of votes.

Raimi responded to the two top choices but couldn’t reveal who they’ve selected as the villainous characters are for the next Spider-Man adventure.

“I love the Lizard… There’s a great story there in the Marvel comic books about Dr. Connors. I’m less familiar with Carnage.”

After this, you could tell Raimi wanted to be more open on the topic, but he must remain tight-lipped for obvious reasons with shooting not even expected to begin until next March. After a long pause, Raimi followed up by saying “I’m not allowed to say at this point.”

Normally, I’d think that The Lizard would be an obvious choice and that the other would be a character not introduced into the franchise yet. I can pretty much guarantee Carnage will not be in Spider-Man 4. After what happened with Venom in Spider-Man 3, they’ll be leaving the symbiotic villains behind until the franchise restarts and/or the Venom solo film gets underway.

However, Raimi later explains that the next movie doesn’t have so much to do with a character introduced in the films so far or about intertwining with/setting up the Venom spinoff. This partially puts a damper on The Lizard’s full introduction.

Of course, he could just be intentionally misleading. It seems like too much of a missed opportunity to not have The Lizard finally make an appearance after seeing Dr. Curt Connors introduced and slightly developed over the last few films.

Raimi continued by elaborating on the goal of Spider-Man 4’s story and how the villain will fit into that plan.

“What we’re trying to do right now is really understand the journey Peter is going to go on this time and have the villain maybe be a counter to that growth, something that he has to overcome… Or maybe he has to grow in a way to overcome the villain, because there always seem to be stories of coming of age, of a young man growing up and learning things about life, so once we are identifying the exact movement that Peter has to grow to, I think the villain—and we’re trying this right now; we’re trying to choose a villain based on who would be the proper counter to that growth, so we really have dramatic conflict.”

  1. oh yeah what i meant to say was if it`s longer there can still be more action scenes, “the way they hate spiderman” is another reason it can`t automatically be “too many villains” like people were saying. It`s probably that the movie didn`t work was cuz There were other plots in SM3 or that they forced Venom in while they were filming or finished the script.

  2. oh and when did peter “whine” in any of the movies?

  3. @ John K

Wow. Slow down turbo – it’ll be OK.

I think multiple villians is fine. You could have a simple 2 dimensional villian like Shocker just rob a bank and Spider-Man can stop him to start off the film. Just a straigtht forward action scene. No follow-up necessary.

And if Raimi thinks that Peter has to still grow as a man, then he needs some real problems, like a Aunt Mae dying, or Mary Jane betraying him, or something heavy like that. There’s a lot of issues that Peter has already dealt with so they would have to come up with something substantial.

As far as the other villians go, I like the Lizard idea, but I also like the idea of a villain that just likes hurting other people. This way Peter has to come to grips with the fact that some villians are beyond redemption. That could be the real growth the character needs.

  4. Wouldn`t it be pretty late to bring in the Lizard? He`s one of the least powerful villains, and Spiderman faced 3 of the most powerful villains, he should`ve been in SM2 and then later in Sm3 he could`ve become biiger and more powerful like in SM3 the game or the comics. Did you know he was used in SM3 the game and became bigger and more dangerous?

  5. oh and fury2701? do you think 3 villains is fine? ok, so you, like many people, think there was too much villains with the buzz story of the movie spotlight? I really don`t see why you guys are complaining so much about there being 3 villains in Sm3, it can work anyhow if the story is right, seriously, what would be so wrong with using lots of villains once in the series? fitting the complexities of each character in there makes it more vicious and more varietic, is there anything wrong with that? Since when do you need to complain about there being 3 villains in there, you need to get your head up straight, you`ve forgetten about other movies making it work, let me tell you something: Each character has a certain dimension in there, so it depends on if they have some sort of sub-plot or set up relationship together, OR if one of the villains are set up in the previous movie and the other two have alreeady gotten beaten by Spiderman and need to team up. It depends on the dimensions or lengths of each villain or what type of villain they are, which is why i`m saying. If atleast 2 of those villains have something in common with eachother, or if they both make common sense together, then it doesn`t matter if there`s 3 villains, it matters how heavy they can carry the storyline, the intention of the movie is just to bring something up that shows the dramatic institue Peter must learn with his responsibility, so even if some storylines are a little bit flinched, still the main thing that matters is that the villains still have side-descretional sense of believability, if they don`t both just keep trying beating up Spiderman, ALSO, as i mentioned, if they have enough time or the movie`s long enough. So if you know that`s not what it is then do you know how they film? Is it that easy for you to be judgemental over an issue like that is, which really, shouldn`t be an issue.

  6. To me the best idea would be a “man-spider” movie in which Peters power are advancing and making him more spider like so he would be force to reveal himself to Dr. Curt Connors (the Lizard) to try to find a cure and stop the spider transformation. Having Spider-man’s blood samples and knowledge of how he got his powers he would be able to apply it in a reptile formula to regrow his arm. This plot could also have Michael Morbious as an assistant, Kraven the hunter hired to capture man-spider/spider-man, and possibly scorpion, rhino, or vulture as lab rats.

  8. Rhino would be could in the sense of having a destructive battle

  9. You guys need to be serious. Let me repeat again, those villains are too silly, not lying to you.

“chhose any plot from the comics” is such a repulsive inverse.

Looks like we see things different ways.

  10. And I`m really curious, why before was everybody having their heights up to see Morbius on the screen?

  11. those are not “perfect” villains, the only necessary occupants wood b Lizard, Carnage, and maybe even Electro. actually i think Electro could be dark enough if he has a tie-in. They`re probBably not gonna “squueeze all those 4 villains in” though.

  12. What “recent interview”

  13. Ok, that`s it. I don`t know what to think. If they use those Rhino, Shocker, or Electro villains it will be a total disaster, i know Sam Raimi hated Venom and i can see the point he makes “lacking humanity” from the comics but if anything needs to get in the way of Venom,Carnage, And lizard skimmed through the screen then it`s all going down the deep end hinge.

  14. i liked the first two so i have faith in raimi. And i will see and no doubt enjoy the next one.

but from a -fan- viewpoint,, i am totally bummed raimi does not like the symbiots. Venoms like the evil version of spidey. he can block spideys sense and is stronger, even has stronger webbing. Carnage is awesome because the dudes freaking nuts, and hes way more lethal than even venom was. both are standalone , one movie bad guys.

  15. JOSE,, sounds like you and i agree to have faith in raimi

    BUT,
YOU CAN NOT tell me that raimi didnt glitch/hack venom for creative differences.

WHY did evil tobey have a bad haircut and dance down the street?
He wasnt even trying anymore at that point. Raimi didnt like the character so he took it out on us lol.

  16. There are many problems with this franchise, such as Tobey Maguire being too old to play Spiderman but looking exactly like Peter Parker. Also, another problem is that villains weren`t used in the proper movies, even if they were trying to make a “good movie for the fans” i for one am fed up that the Green Goblin was already used in the first one, this is the problem when a franchise like this is this popular, it gets way out of control and they use up all the wrong villains. But even if the villains weren`t used too early in the series Maguire would still be too old, that`s the problem. If Maguire was a few years younger he would`ve been perfect to portray the character, though it`d suck if someone else had to play Spiderman, cuz we want Spidey to be presented in a way not like other superheroes and just a “normal” looking guy right? I wish that all the actors were the right age for their roles and that the right villains were used at the right movie in the right time. I really can`t know what way to react, there are so many things wrong with the series. And i also wish these films were kind of dark, not too kid friendly movies, where it doesn`t rely too much on the action with Spiderman fighting the more tougher villains to make a “good movie for the fans” and it doesn`t focus TOO much on Spiderman being Spiderman swinging in his costume. Yes Spiderman is a “unique” character like Raimi said, so? He really doesn`t even praise himself being a superhero, he didn`t cause himself for his power, he has very much dramatic intimacy underlne in the world with connections and as being “outside of human” and he`s just a very mature, Normal-looking guy, so he Can go dark, but other problems with this series is that they`ve shown too much of Spidey`s supersrength with Spidermam stoopping the train, even if Spiderman was that powerful, but unfortunately, i wasn`t early enough as a ranter to tell them what they shouldn`t have done with this series. Spiderman is too dominated with doing too much crazy stuff with him. After what happened in Sm3 i`m only going to watch this movie probably just to see if they did anything wrong with Spiderman unless it can make people forget what they saw in Sm3. But even without Venom, what would there be, SM and harry against Sandman or Vulture? It`s not the studio`s fault for “pressuring raimi” it`s that villains were wasted. The first 2 movies are to blame, not just Sm3. They put too much dynasty treating this lke an ordinaary franchise.

  17. I see Raimi doing Spiderman 4 one of two ways. Either he figures this is his last time directing Spiderman and pulls out all the stunts or plans on directing more Spiderman movies and sets this movie up for future installments by going with only one or two villains. Either way, I think we will get a great effort from him in Spiderman 4. Yes, the studio had much to do with the mess that spidey 3 was but so did Raimi and we (the fans) get paid back with an awesome movie. here’s to hoping!

  18. Lizard and Kraven. Connor’s back story is practically there, an peeps had to wonder about the arm from the other films, so you gotta address that.I see JJJ bringing our favorie big game hunter to the big city to hunt down our spider.
