spider man 4 villains Sam Raimi Discusses Spider Man 4 Villains

Spider-Man 4 has been receiving plenty of buzz in recent times with announcements and confirmations of it going into production next year for a 2011 release. On top of that, we’ve had countless reports and speculation about what storylines it may follow, the start of development for Spider-Man 5 & 6, and discussions of what villains will be the focus of the fourth installment in the super successful superhero franchise.

MTV spoke with Sam Raimi and got the director to discuss a bit about the villains of Spider-Man 4 and the results of a fan poll they ran on the site which saw The Lizard and Carnage come out on top as the most desired villains, with the highest percentages from an unknown number of votes.

Raimi responded to the two top choices but couldn’t reveal who they’ve selected as the villainous characters are for the next Spider-Man adventure.

“I love the Lizard… There’s a great story there in the Marvel comic books about Dr. Connors. I’m less familiar with Carnage.”

After this, you could tell Raimi wanted to be more open on the topic, but he must remain tight-lipped for obvious reasons with shooting not even expected to begin until next March. After a long pause, Raimi followed up by saying “I’m not allowed to say at this point.”

Normally, I’d think that The Lizard would be an obvious choice and that the other would be a character not introduced into the franchise yet. I can pretty much guarantee Carnage will not be in Spider-Man 4. After what happened with Venom in Spider-Man 3, they’ll be leaving the symbiotic villains behind until the franchise restarts and/or the Venom solo film gets underway.

However, Raimi later explains that the next movie doesn’t have so much to do with a character introduced in the films so far or about intertwining with/setting up the Venom spinoff. This partially puts a damper on The Lizard’s full introduction.

Of course, he could just be intentionally misleading. It seems like too much of a missed opportunity to not have The Lizard finally make an appearance after seeing Dr. Curt Connors introduced and slightly developed over the last few films.

Raimi continued by elaborating on the goal of Spider-Man 4′s story and how the villain will fit into that plan.

“What we’re trying to do right now is really understand the journey Peter is going to go on this time and have the villain maybe be a counter to that growth, something that he has to overcome… Or maybe he has to grow in a way to overcome the villain, because there always seem to be stories of coming of age, of a young man growing up and learning things about life, so once we are identifying the exact movement that Peter has to grow to, I think the villain—and we’re trying this right now; we’re trying to choose a villain based on who would be the proper counter to that growth, so we really have dramatic conflict.”

  1. oh yeah what i meant to say was if it`s longer there can still be more action scenes, “the way they hate spiderman” is another reason it can`t automatically be “too many villains” like people were saying. It`s probably that the movie didn`t work was cuz There were other plots in SM3 or that they forced Venom in while they were filming or finished the script.

  2. oh and when did peter “whine” in any of the movies?

  3. @ John K

Wow. Slow down turbo – it’ll be OK.

I think multiple villians is fine. You could have a simple 2 dimensional villian like Shocker just rob a bank and Spider-Man can stop him to start off the film. Just a straigtht forward action scene. No follow-up necessary.

And if Raimi thinks that Peter has to still grow as a man, then he needs some real problems, like a Aunt Mae dying, or Mary Jane betraying him, or something heavy like that. There’s a lot of issues that Peter has already dealt with so they would have to come up with something substantial.

As far as the other villians go, I like the Lizard idea, but I also like the idea of a villain that just likes hurting other people. This way Peter has to come to grips with the fact that some villians are beyond redemption. That could be the real growth the character needs.

  4. Wouldn`t it be pretty late to bring in the Lizard? He`s one of the least powerful villains, and Spiderman faced 3 of the most powerful villains, he should`ve been in SM2 and then later in Sm3 he could`ve become biiger and more powerful like in SM3 the game or the comics. Did you know he was used in SM3 the game and became bigger and more dangerous?

  5. oh and fury2701? do you think 3 villains is fine? ok, so you, like many people, think there was too much villains with the buzz story of the movie spotlight? I really don`t see why you guys are complaining so much about there being 3 villains in Sm3, it can work anyhow if the story is right, seriously, what would be so wrong with using lots of villains once in the series? fitting the complexities of each character in there makes it more vicious and more varietic, is there anything wrong with that? Since when do you need to complain about there being 3 villains in there, you need to get your head up straight, you`ve forgetten about other movies making it work, let me tell you something: Each character has a certain dimension in there, so it depends on if they have some sort of sub-plot or set up relationship together, OR if one of the villains are set up in the previous movie and the other two have alreeady gotten beaten by Spiderman and need to team up. It depends on the dimensions or lengths of each villain or what type of villain they are, which is why i`m saying. If atleast 2 of those villains have something in common with eachother, or if they both make common sense together, then it doesn`t matter if there`s 3 villains, it matters how heavy they can carry the storyline, the intention of the movie is just to bring something up that shows the dramatic institue Peter must learn with his responsibility, so even if some storylines are a little bit flinched, still the main thing that matters is that the villains still have side-descretional sense of believability, if they don`t both just keep trying beating up Spiderman, ALSO, as i mentioned, if they have enough time or the movie`s long enough. So if you know that`s not what it is then do you know how they film? Is it that easy for you to be judgemental over an issue like that is, which really, shouldn`t be an issue.

  6. To me the best idea would be a “man-spider” movie in which Peters power are advancing and making him more spider like so he would be force to reveal himself to Dr. Curt Connors (the Lizard) to try to find a cure and stop the spider transformation. Having Spider-man’s blood samples and knowledge of how he got his powers he would be able to apply it in a reptile formula to regrow his arm. This plot could also have Michael Morbious as an assistant, Kraven the hunter hired to capture man-spider/spider-man, and possibly scorpion, rhino, or vulture as lab rats.

  8. Rhino would be could in the sense of having a destructive battle

  9. You guys need to be serious. Let me repeat again, those villains are too silly, not lying to you.

“chhose any plot from the comics” is such a repulsive inverse.

Looks like we see things different ways.

  10. And I`m really curious, why before was everybody having their heights up to see Morbius on the screen?

  11. John K,

Im not complaining as to “there were too many Villians in Spiderman 3 which ruined the movie” that wasnt the case..Look at The Dark Knight movie for example..We had Two Face, The Joker, and alittle bit of the Scare-Crow..The movie made more than a Billion WorldWide because the movie was well scripted and well in place like how the Joker was introduced in the first film and people knew he was going to appear in the second film.. so having too many villians was not my complaint about Spiderman was the fact that the StoryLine to each Villian was rushed or wasnt properly scripted right..Spiderman 1 “was Awsome Loved it” (“How Peter Parker becomes the Spiderman and learns how to use his powers and only 1 villian was in it”) Spiderman 2 “Awsome Loved it” (How Peter Parker has a choice between living a normal life as a normal Human Being and Living the life of a Superhero 1 villian was in it but is was still awsome as well”) Spiderman 3 was awsome loved the villians loved how Harry gets revenge for his father by trying to kill Spiderman… the only reason why Venom was on the screen was because Marvel had told Director Sam Raimi that Venom had to appear in the picture somewhere in the movie as well it was a wasnt Sam Raimi’s falt that Venom was brought up in the last minute which is why the story wasnt going in the right direction with this film.

  12. It doesnt matter how many Villians are brought to the screen in a superhero movie..if the script for each Villian is well written and the costume designers do an amazing job making the costumes for each villian or superhero in the movie then the movie will turn out well.

  13. Going back with the villians in Spiderman 4..the Reason why I said Morbious would be a good character is because he is a doctor that studies medicine..Dr. Conners is also a Doctor which later turns into the Lizard and I know that the Lizard will appear in this Film because it is highly choosen and would fit the story well.. both are doctors both study medicine and both become 2 different villians…If they decide to go with Carnage..Well I dont really know because then they would have to bring out Venom again and well already saw him in Spiderman 3, then we are going to see Venom again in Spiderman 4, then again for the 3rd time for the Venom Solo Movie..thats too much they need to choose a character that they havn’t choosen before because we are already going to see Venom in the near future..Mysterio, Scorpion, Kraven would also be good Characters to choose from..I think if they choose betwenn Kraven, Scorpion, Morbious, Lizard, or Mysterio would be perfect Villians

  14. I also think if they choose a Villian that will enable Peter Parker/ Spiderman to grow up and believe in the superhero that he is..Spiderman has to believe in his powers and grow up like Superman for instance..they have to choose a perfect Villian that will enable him to do so…Spiderman 1 (Peter Parker learns how to use his powers and becomes the Spiderman) Spiderman 2 (Peter Parker has a choose between living 2 lives) Spiderman 3 (Peter Parker forgives his uncle’s killer) Spiderman 4 (Peter Parker Finally grows up)

  15. those are not “perfect” villains, the only necessary occupants wood b Lizard, Carnage, and maybe even Electro. actually i think Electro could be dark enough if he has a tie-in. They`re probBably not gonna “squueeze all those 4 villains in” though.

  16. Electro works fine for me too any one but Venom or Carnage..I know there not going to squeeze those all those Villians in.. im just saying what villians would best fit the picture out of the 5 villians I recenlty thought about like: Lizard, Morbious, Kraven, Mysterio, Scorpion, or even Electro..would be good villians to choose from..Dont get me wrong I do like Carnage too but I know if they bring out Carnage then they are going to have to bring out Venom as well..and we dont need to see Venom on the Picture 3 times..What are the odds that Carnage or Venom will appear on the screen between 1-100% 100% being the highest..but remember Sam Raimi already mentioned in an interview that he believes the Symbiote characters will probably be left out for this next film.. but then again most of the votes are on Carnage and Venom..I dont understand why People want to see Venom again…but then again it would be nice if they brought back that Black Symbiote Spiderman Costume again heheh! Really nice Outfit ;)

  17. As a matter of Fact I actually have a Black Symbiote Spiderman Costume at home too..Movie Quality Replica Costume really Nice Spiderman Costume..interested in a Movie quality Replica costume log onto really nice Movie Quality Replica Spiderman Costumes.

  18. Enought of that..I hope they choose at least 1 or 2 of the Villians that I recenlty mentioned..That would be Nice: Electro, Morbious, Kraven, Lizard, Scorpion, or Mysterio.

  19. What “recent interview”

  20. Ok, that`s it. I don`t know what to think. If they use those Rhino, Shocker, or Electro villains it will be a total disaster, i know Sam Raimi hated Venom and i can see the point he makes “lacking humanity” from the comics but if anything needs to get in the way of Venom,Carnage, And lizard skimmed through the screen then it`s all going down the deep end hinge.

  21. i liked the first two so i have faith in raimi. And i will see and no doubt enjoy the next one.

but from a -fan- viewpoint,, i am totally bummed raimi does not like the symbiots. Venoms like the evil version of spidey. he can block spideys sense and is stronger, even has stronger webbing. Carnage is awesome because the dudes freaking nuts, and hes way more lethal than even venom was. both are standalone , one movie bad guys.

  22. This Interview on this article “Sam Raimi talks about Spiderman 4 Villians” he said:

“Normally, I’d think that The Lizard would be an obvious choice and that the other would be a character not introduced into the franchise yet. I can pretty much guarantee Carnage will not be in Spider-Man 4. After what happened with Venom in Spider-Man 3, they’ll be leaving the symbiotic villains behind until the franchise restarts and/or the Venom solo film gets underway.”

But like I said guys the highest votes are on Carnage and Lizard.. So I really dont know what villians they are going to choose..or go with..I just hope they do a better job than Spiderman 3.

  23. I hope they choose really good Villians like: Electro, Morbious, Mysterio, Scorpion, Lizard, or even Rhino would be a good character..Carnage would be ok I guess but not Venom.

  24. You have to also see it wasn’t Sam Raimi’s fault that Spiderman 3 wasn’t as good as the other 2 or I should say at least the Villian Venom.. for many reason’s he said..that Marvel left a Notice the very last minute that somewhere Venom had to appear on the screen for Spiderman was a Requirement..He had to appear on the screen otherwise the movie wasn’t going to be released or somthing like that..its an interview somewhere here as well..Venom was created the very last minute..thats why the character didnt come out well and thats why the storyline sucked because they had to redue everything all over again in order to fit the story of the villian Venom in the picture…So it wasn’t Sam Raimi’s fault it was Marvels fault.

  25. JOSE,, sounds like you and i agree to have faith in raimi

YOU CAN NOT tell me that raimi didnt glitch/hack venom for creative differences.

WHY did evil tobey have a bad haircut and dance down the street?
He wasnt even trying anymore at that point. Raimi didnt like the character so he took it out on us lol.

  26. Here is the article guys read this piece: “Sam Raimi takes control of Spiderman 4″:

“They really gave me a tremendous amount of control on the first two films, actually. But then there were different opinions on the third film and I didn’t really have creative control, so to speak.”

There were rumblings that Raimi wasn’t allowed to truly do his own story and that producers forced him to include the popular Venom character as one of the villains in the story. When asked about that, Raimi responded:

“I don’t even want to comment on Venom, because I know he’s a great character and all the fans love him. I never want to say anything bad about a much-beloved character because usually it turns out that I’m the one that doesn’t understand what makes it great.”

It seems that the image above is more meaningful than at first glace…

More questions were thrown at the director about the issues surrounding Spider-Man 3 and the at-the-time Marvel head honcho Avi Arad’s rumored insistence on Venom’s inclusion, but Raimi responded professionally and didn’t name names or play the blame game in his answers.

“The best way for me to move forward on films, I realize…and this was a lesson I had to learn for myself…is that I’ve gotta be the singular voice that makes the creative choices on the film.”

So there you have it..If Raimi takes full control (which he will by the way) there is no way the movie will not be good. Rich, I do agree with you on evil Tobey Maguire dancing like an idiot on the street..that too me was too Corny and should have never been brought on the screen..That piece did ruin the movie..But like I said guys if Raimi has full control in this next film..I will guareente you the movie will come out good.

  27. There are many problems with this franchise, such as Tobey Maguire being too old to play Spiderman but looking exactly like Peter Parker. Also, another problem is that villains weren`t used in the proper movies, even if they were trying to make a “good movie for the fans” i for one am fed up that the Green Goblin was already used in the first one, this is the problem when a franchise like this is this popular, it gets way out of control and they use up all the wrong villains. But even if the villains weren`t used too early in the series Maguire would still be too old, that`s the problem. If Maguire was a few years younger he would`ve been perfect to portray the character, though it`d suck if someone else had to play Spiderman, cuz we want Spidey to be presented in a way not like other superheroes and just a “normal” looking guy right? I wish that all the actors were the right age for their roles and that the right villains were used at the right movie in the right time. I really can`t know what way to react, there are so many things wrong with the series. And i also wish these films were kind of dark, not too kid friendly movies, where it doesn`t rely too much on the action with Spiderman fighting the more tougher villains to make a “good movie for the fans” and it doesn`t focus TOO much on Spiderman being Spiderman swinging in his costume. Yes Spiderman is a “unique” character like Raimi said, so? He really doesn`t even praise himself being a superhero, he didn`t cause himself for his power, he has very much dramatic intimacy underlne in the world with connections and as being “outside of human” and he`s just a very mature, Normal-looking guy, so he Can go dark, but other problems with this series is that they`ve shown too much of Spidey`s supersrength with Spidermam stoopping the train, even if Spiderman was that powerful, but unfortunately, i wasn`t early enough as a ranter to tell them what they shouldn`t have done with this series. Spiderman is too dominated with doing too much crazy stuff with him. After what happened in Sm3 i`m only going to watch this movie probably just to see if they did anything wrong with Spiderman unless it can make people forget what they saw in Sm3. But even without Venom, what would there be, SM and harry against Sandman or Vulture? It`s not the studio`s fault for “pressuring raimi” it`s that villains were wasted. The first 2 movies are to blame, not just Sm3. They put too much dynasty treating this lke an ordinaary franchise.

  28. I see Raimi doing Spiderman 4 one of two ways. Either he figures this is his last time directing Spiderman and pulls out all the stunts or plans on directing more Spiderman movies and sets this movie up for future installments by going with only one or two villains. Either way, I think we will get a great effort from him in Spiderman 4. Yes, the studio had much to do with the mess that spidey 3 was but so did Raimi and we (the fans) get paid back with an awesome movie. here’s to hoping!

  29. Lizard and Kraven. Connor’s back story is practically there, an peeps had to wonder about the arm from the other films, so you gotta address that.I see JJJ bringing our favorie big game hunter to the big city to hunt down our spider.
