Apple is on a roll today as not only did it premier the new trailer for The A-Team (which we posted earlier) but it’s also got the latest trailer for the new Angelina Jolie action film, Salt. You can check out the trailer below.
Jolie stars as Evelyn Salt, a CIA officer who goes on the run after she is accused of being a Russian spy. Here’s the official synopsis:
As a CIA officer, Evelyn Salt swore an oath to duty, honor and country. Her loyalty will be tested when a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy. Salt goes on the run, using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture. Salt’s efforts to prove her innocence only serve to cast doubt on her motives, as the hunt to uncover the truth behind her identity continues and the question remains: “Who is Salt?”
You can watch the trailer in HD over at Apple.
I like the parts at the beginning and end of the trailer where it rewinds everything that you’ve seen. I know it’s been done before (both in trailers and within movies themselves) but I thought it was effective for this movie.
Although some of the action is way over-the-top (such as Salt jumping onto a truck traveling at high speed), Jolie still impresses in a leading role. I don’t think it’s going to be the type of heavyweight acting we’ve seen her give in recent films like Changeling and A Mighty Heart, but this shows she can be diverse in her choice of roles (in the very same year she did both Changeling and Wanted, for example).
The dramatic actor and the action star – what more could you possibly want?
The interesting thing about Salt is the fact that the lead role was originally written as a man and was even set to be played by Tom Cruise at one point. However, Jolie was then brought in to replace Cruise and the script was rewritten to account for the change in gender.
Thoughts on the new trailer for Salt? Do you think Jolie makes a good action star?
Along with Jolie, Salt co-stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Liev Schreiber. It’s directed by Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games) and written by Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium) and Brian Helgeland (Green Zone, Robin Hood). The film opens in theaters on July 23rd, 2010.
