Popular Young Actors Want To Join Denzel Washington In ‘Safe House’

Published 5 years ago by , Updated February 15th, 2014 at 4:25 pm,

It appears that many of the “hot” young actors in Hollywood at the minute want to work with veteran Denzel Washington on his next movie Safe House. Ryan Reynolds, Shia LaBeouf, Taylor Kitsch, Chris Pine, Sam Worthington, Garrett Hedlund, Zac Efron, Channing Tatum, Chris Hemsworth and Jake Gyllenhaal are all after a supporting role in the crime drama about a young CIA agent who is forced to move  a dangerous criminal to safety when they are attacked at a safe house.

Who will get it?

Word on the street (via Deadline) is that The Green Lantern himself, Ryan Reynolds, is the frontrunner for the role at this point, although it has to be said (just like Tyra Banks would say) that competition for the part is “fierce.” Reynolds is still far from a lock on the project, which is currently prepping for an early 2011 shoot.

The furious rivalry to grab the Safehouse role has led to a flurry of meetings and even a series of auditions. It’s odd that some of those names on the list would even have to audition, but I can only assume that Efron and Hedlund would be the ones who are likely to want to show off their action chops to director Daniel Espinosa.

Pine has recently finished working with Washington on Tony Scott’s Unstoppable, so he may have the inside track, however he may be out of the running due to his commitments to the new Jack Ryan movie Moscow and Star Trek 2. Worthington is also a man with a packed slate, due to his attachment to several other action films including a Clash of the Titans sequel, so his schedule may lead to him dropping out of the race.

Tatum has been growing a steady action portfolio over the last few years, so he may be have a shot, while Hemsworth and Kitsch are also becoming more and more bankable due to their lead roles in Thor and John Carter. Shia LaBeouf has shown his action credentials in Indiana Jones and the Transformers franchise, and he also seems to be taking the Tom Cruise road to stardom by working with strong, older actors like Harrison Ford and Michael Douglas (in Wall Street 2), so this fits right into his career trajectory. Gyllenhaal has recently come off the underperforming action film Prince of Persia, so producers may be a bit worried about his pulling power in this sort of film.

A good action role can make or break an actor – just ask Bruce Willis and Will Smith, who were known as television comedy actors before Die Hard and Bad Boys catapulted them into the leading man action arena. Safehouse could do the same for the likes of Efron, but will the studios and audiences be willing to accept him in such a role?

We will find out soon enough. So keep reading Screen Rant for more news on Safe House.

  1. oh lord, please leave shia, zac and jake out of this…cant dtand any of those guys

  2. Isn’t Shia possibly busy too?

Zac Efron is buffer than Shia LaBeouf, he’s just not as ugly. Plus he looks a lot more manly now than that old picture looks. http://bit.ly/be5oDu

    Poor Jake Gyllenhaal.

  3. I thought ID4 launched Smith in action not bad boys.

Honestly Reynolds and Pine seem like they have very little chance given GL and Trek commitments. I’d imagine Hemsworth would be busy with Avengers and a Thor Sequel.

I actually like Shia to be honest I think he’s good actor he’s made a few bad choices and 4 years ago I’d of said I hated him, but I think now he’s about equal to my views on Leo. I like Jake G as well he’s a good actor and has proven that several times. Like the films or not Donnie Darko and Jarhead were great performances.

Tatum is a horrible actor and shouldn’t be allowed near this and is anyone seriously considering Zac Effron ? Lol

  4. Since they seem to be taking anybody for this role,I just wanted to say tht I am available!

  5. Eww keep Zac off that list.

Ryan or Shia would do for me.

  6. Can you please tell me what mov ie id4 is please daniel.

  7. Sorry about that I like to call it ID4 but that can be confusing it’s just Independance day.

  8. I would consider Zac for this, I think he is a better actor then anyone gives him credit for. But yeah, Shia wouldn’t be to bad for this one either.

    • zac is not a good actor, everyone thinks he is a good actor but he is not.

  9. Ryan Reynolds!

  10. why not like james franco, hayden christensen, josh duhamel, they are way better actors than shia, tatum, zac, and sam.

    • You cant be serious john…Hayden single handedly ruined Star wars for the next generation lmbo.

  11. I like James Franco, Josh Duhammel or Shia lebouf…dude was awesome in Eagle eye…one of my favorite movies. Denzel and chris pine in a movie together should be pretty friggin intense.

  12. Deadline Hollywood says Reynolds is currently in negotiation for the role.
