Ryan Reynolds Snags Green Lantern

Published 6 years ago by , Updated February 15th, 2014 at 4:24 pm,

We told you to check back regularly for this news to drop, and now it’s dropping!

Variety is reporting that actor Ryan Reynolds has been cast as The Green Lantern in Warner Bros.’ upcoming live-action adaption of the DC comics superhero. This announcement comes on the heels of earlier news that DC/Warner Bros. had narrowed the long search for their Green Lantern down to three finalists.

Reynolds has been a fast-rising star: his performance as Wade Wilson/Deadpool in this Summer’s Wolverine led Fox to create a spinoff film for the character. His most recent flick, the rom-com The Proposal with Sandra Bullock just passed $100 million and the actor has another film on the way, a psychological thriller called Buried, which is already generating mild buzz.

For all these reasons – and the fact that Reynolds has proven (keyword) he’s a pretty good leading man with a variety of range – he obviously deserves the role, and, in my early uninformed opinion, will handle it well. Congrats to him.

The Green Lantern casting has been a long, semi-entertaining drama but I’m glad I can now say that the film will be directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale), with a script by Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim and will star Ryan Reynolds in the titular role of Green Lantern/Hal Jordan!

I am Ryan Reynolds.

Phew. Over and done with. Now all I gotta do is let you know every time  they add another cast member, shoot a scene, shoot a photo of a scene, cut a trailer, premiere a trailer…yadda, yadda, yadda. At least this part got figured out.

The Green Lantern is slated for release on June 17, 2011. Filming is set to start this Fall.

  1. Ryan Reynolds playing both a DC and Marvel character? ehh…
I understand him being cast as the smart-mouthed Deadpool because he fits into that role SO well. I’m having a hard time picturing him playing the greatest Lantern to ever wear the ring. Maybe he’ll convince me, maybe not… too early to tell.

  2. naw, he is good for the part, better for kyle -but good as hal as well…

  3. AWESOME NEWS!!! He can play that cocky swagger of Hal Jordan easily..THe more news we get on this movie the better it seems it is going to be..

    Big budget – 150 million
    Great director – Martin Cambell
Great lead role casting – Ryan Reynolds
    Great Script

One of my most anticipated in the next few years along side IM2, Avengers, Cap, and Spiderman 4..

  4. Great news!! The prospects for this film keep getting better and better…all the pieces seem to be falling into place..

  5. I am reading `Rage of the Red Lanterns`as we speak..Can`t wait for this movie..

  6. WOW, Ryan Reynalds will be playing TWO super heros??? WOW, that’s so weird! Hey, it’s much better than Justin Timberlake! lol

This should be good because Martin Campbell seems pretty awesome in action movies.

  7. So Reynolds will be playing TWO different comic book characters? I do like Reynolds but I still think that another face would have been better. Chris Pine, for instance.

  8. Why not ?
    Way to go Ryan!

  9. Ok, so it’s not the WORST casting ever but I still don’t totally support this.
He’s too comedic as an actor to play Hal, who’s rather serious.

And he’s too young, or atleast looks too young facially.

  10. When i saw that picture in the earlier story today I thought,
    HAL !

  11. Is this really true? I guess when the time comes people will make comparison about which character he played better. Personally, I’d bet it on Deadpool. But hey, this is cool!

  12. He also played Hannibal King in Blade. That would make three comic book characters – a real big trifecta for him.

  13. Xigbar,
    when you say too comedic,
You mean kind of like casting Michael Keaton for Batman?

  14. I wonder who is going to play Sinestro?

  15. I hope they consider Dennis Quaid for Alan Scott.

  16. Not bad. Not great.
    I imagined Jim Caviezel.

    A more mature and serious
    a Hal Jourdan than what
    is being envisioned.

  17. »Jordon

  18. »Jordan. I give up.

  20. Well it is better than Justin Timberlake. Although I would prefer Bradley Cooper. Good actor. Not over exposed. And he looks like Hal Jordan. Just kind of tired of seeing Reynolds. Hollywood does it again. Using one guy to play every important male lead. Way to go Warner Brothers. Good luck with making that Superman flick before the copyright slips.

  21. @ Xigbar.

Not a serious actor? Please go watch “the Nines.”

  22. I could see why he’d sign up for this project. If things go according to plan, we’ll never even see his face in the Deadpool movie, so he decided to take a role that would let him show off his good looks.

  23. Great news and a coup for WB’s to take Reynolds away from the small time dead end Deadpool film with crappy Fox studios. Now the GL film has a chance to be epic and fun much like Iron Man. Timberlake or Cooper as a lead in a big time franchise type of sci film like GL??

What a joke that would have been!

Now things can get rolling with the potentially awesome GL film! Reynolds has screen presence, charisma and versatility and is a solid choice! An Oscar caliber actor is not needed for this role. A fun charismatic actor with screen presence is needed!

  24. he was great in “the nines”,
now not only deadpool but Green lantern.
    this is wonderful News.

    cant wait.

  25. I like Reynolds as much as the next guy but I think this decision is extremely nearsighted and cynical. He’s a pretty boy where they needed someone a little rougher around the edges; an obvious fanboy choice where an RDJ-style, left-field one would have given the film some genuine oomph.

It could have been worse and been Timberlake, sure… but Bradley Cooper would at least have been interesting. Reynolds’ casting is a shameful act of uncreative mediocrity – much like Nathan Fillion would have been if fans unable to step outside genre entertainment had their way.

  26. I don’t like this move. I’m with the “Reynolds as Deadpool? Fine. Reynolds as the Green Lantern? Nada.” camp.

  27. Reynolds as the GL, very good casting in my opinion.
I know he’s mostly remembered for being the comedic/smart ass-remarks guy but I still liked what he did in the Amittyville Horror remake. Not funny at all but very scary, so he can be imposing on screen.

I’m glad they didn’t pick Cooper. Some reason, all the roles he has done he comes off like such a douchebag. Maybe thats just the way I see it.

  28. He was MY choice out of the three. Great casting.

  29. Thank god its not timberlake! Im pretty happy with this casting, i think he will handle it well. Itll be wierd to see him as another comic character…but ill think i can get past it!
