Ryan Reynolds is the Frontrunner for the ‘Highlander’ Reboot

Published 3 years ago by , Updated July 23rd, 2013 at 9:48 am,

There hasn’t really been any progress or report on the Highlander reboot, since Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) signed up to direct the project – shortly before he officially jumped ship on another impending reboot, The Crow.

Reports are in that the newly-formed Lionsgate-Summit has potentially found the man to follow after Christopher Lambert as the revamped Highlander series’ protagonist [Insert obligatory “There can be only one!” joke here] – and it’s none other than Blade/X-Men/Green Lantern franchise alum, Ryan Reynolds.

Variety says that Reynolds has emerged as the front-runner for the rebooted Highlander; furthermore, their insiders are reporting that preliminary talks have begun, but that Reynolds is still “weighing other offers.” So there is no guarantee (yet) that he will commit to the project, which is being scripted by Iron Man and Punisher: War Zone writing duo Matt Holloway and Art Marcum.

All things considered, this announcement isn’t too shocking. Reynolds may have suffered a rough year in 2011, between the under-performance of Green Lantern and The Change-Up, but he followed it up with this year’s Safe House – which proved a box office success and earned the actor praise for his performance. Moreover, Reynolds packs enough star-power to help make the Highlander reboot a more bankable venture, but not so much as to overshadow the project’s main selling points: brand recognition and appeal to the built-in fanbase – which seems to agree that the franchise could use a fresh start, at this point.

Reynold’s potential involvement with the Highlander reboot should go over better with fans than, say, those old rumors about Channing Tatum being eyed for The Crow – but the buzz will probably still be lukewarm overall. That seems to be the general feeling about this project right now: it’s far from Hollywood’s worst planned reinvention of an older property, but there’s nothing really inspiring about how it’s come together either (so far).

Are you game for a Highlander reboot headlined by Ryan Reynolds? Sound off in the comments section.

  1. No.
I like Reynolds but there is only one person who can play Highlander and he looks EXACTLY like Christopher Lambert. Thomas Jane for Highlander or don’t do Highlander.

    • Thomas Jane couldn’t look more like anyone else. He needs to be in the reboot.

    • Ryan Renolds.. Boo! Lets just have justin timberlake as the kurgan and just completely stomp one of my favorite movies ever. Thomas Jane, no other options.

    • That’s exactly what I thoguht when I heard Hollywood was batting aroudn the idea of a reboot: Thomas Jane. http://thegeekrebellion.com/2011/03/is-highlander-getting-the-twilight-treatment/

I really think if this makes it to film I’m going to vomit.

  2. NO! Ryan Reynolds is not a good actor. He is not a super hero, he is not a vampire slayer, he is not deadpool, nor is he a secret agent. He has played the same character over and over and over and over. He has no acting ability. HE SHOULD NOT PLAY Connor MacLeod. I don’t even like the idea of a remake of Highlander. It should be left alone.

    • Have you ever seen The Nines? Freaking awesome movie, so to say he is complete garbage is a bullsnot rant. I would love to see Thomas Jane play MacLeod though, it’s freaky how much they look alike. It’s like he really is a highlander and immortal and he just reinvents himself every few years, lol.

  3. No he should not be Connor f’in MacLeod. First off he still has 2 other loose ends to tie up before he can even think of being in another fantasy based movie or did Deadpool & R.I.P.D. just suddenly vanish. No he’s not the greatest choice for DP & I’ve never read anything R.I.P.D. related, but damn it the least he could do is keep his damn word on things!! -__-

  4. i’m beginning to think that tamp is RR

  5. I am fan, but I also am the person that “ALWAYS” has a special place in my heart for the “UNDERDOG” Any mention of any project he has comming out and here comes the same nay sayers who make the same claim about numberous actors. Most people who go to his movies go and don’t post a comment on every board about how they feel. (Drama queens) But there is something about these “COMIC BOOK GEEKS” that just can’t seem to move on to other projects.

    • How is he an underdog? Getting paid a lot of money to make movies and jumping from one Hollywood starlet to another does not sound like a tortured life. People have a right to voice their opinion about something, and that is the point of this board and other ones like it. You say most people who go to his movies don’t post a comment on every board about how they feel, yet here you are doing just that multiple times.

Not everyone is going to like what every actor does, and they vote with their dollar ultimately. People posting on the Internet does not hurt Ryan Reynolds feelings in any way, the only thing does is how his marketability is perceived by studios. As an actor, movie star, or whatever the choices he makes with the roles he takes and how he plays them is what influences how people feel about him and the movies he is in.

Comic book geeks aside as you call them are only a small part of the equation since aside from the few comic movies he has done a lot of people still link him to Van Wilder and that whole shtick or the comedies that he has done. Stuff like Smoking Aces, Buried and even the Amittyville Horror were not on a lot of people’s radar. So when people hear he is being considered for a role in a remake (people already have it in for most remakes these days), the first thing that is going to pop in their minds is him running around with a sword, doing a Scottish accent I guess, and cracking jokes. Some people just don’t care for the idea of it and that is all they can see at this point when the project is being discussed. At the end of the day only Reynolds can alter that view with his performance.

      • My comments are my opinions and I have the right to post in defense of some of the criticisms posted as well. However I disagre because he has money does not “EXCLUDE” him from “UNDERDOG” status as well. And whom he takes to bed should not even be mentioned in this conversation. When you say at the end of the day only Ryan can change the view. I can disagree on that issue as well, because of “PRECONCIEVED” views voiced before anything has been can change some small minded thinkers. Rotten Tomatoes and other critics start chatter before a movie is shown and that has an effect on outcomes.

        • You seem to be more affected by this stuff then I am sure Reynolds is himself. You mention Rotten Tomatoes like it means something one way or another, maybe you should just stop visiting sites like these then.

          • tamp has been crying about peoples negative opinions of ryan renolds since this thing posted. he/she must be the head of his fan club or maybe its renolds himself who knows. Whos the dude from Wanted and Xmen first class? i thought he was gonna play the Highlander. Man why cant they just find some Scottish actor who is good for the part? I wish they would cast a talented unknown for the role.

            Antonio Banderas for Ramirez!!!

        • R u some kinda queer or somethin? u must really wanna blow Ryan Reynolds!

  6. Casting Reynolds would fit as well as Seth Rogan or Jonah Hill.

  7. Wow!! I did not think my personal opinions would matter so much. I am flattered!! Thanks Guys

  8. umm..no. ryan reynolds doing highlander would be like meryl streep doing tomb raider…if it has a really good script and actually reboots the character and origin-and also retcons the whole immortal b.s. that was always redone in every film to the point that even if you followed the series you’d still be confused..
Reynolds…hmm..now that i think about it maybe..but Thomas Jane or even dare i say the “name that should not be said” Nic Cage…

    • did you just compare ryan renolds to Meryl Streep? I dont know how many head injuries it would take to make me retarded enough to agree with that but I doubt id live.

  9. Ryan Renolds as Connor Macleod? NOPE.
