Flash forward to now, and the Deadpool film is in pre-production with Ryan Reynolds at the helm. Two weeks ago, IGN got an exclusive sit down with the Canadian star to talk about his current projects and the Deadpool spinoff.
“We’re just trying to get it right. There’s so many variables to play. It’s tough because when you have a character like Deadpool, to the greatest extent of your power, you want to bring as much authenticity to that character as possible. And by “authenticity,” I don’t mean that you’d want to make him somebody that you’d have a Starbucks coffee with, I mean that you want to make him as close to the comics as possible. And there’s nothing that I wouldn’t do to make sure that ends up on film, but sometimes things are out of your control, things that you can’t change. But I’m really happy, in these early talks, that the studio is as obsessed with making it as close to the comic book source material as possible. And that’s all I really needed to hear. Cuz I will husk-f*@k a herd of cattle to bring Wade Wilson to life as the real deal.”
Uhhh… a little extreme but I love it. IGN also asked him if he had a message to give to fans who are worried about the Deadpool character and how he will be portrayed from what happened to him in Wolverine.
“If they can imagine if one of them were given the opportunity to do a Deadpool movie, just imagine that’s what’s happening. Just to have faith in that. And to have faith in the studio. It’s hard for fans to do that, but I feel like they really want to do an authentic Deadpool movie….He’s like Jason Bourne meets Phantom of the Opera by way of Caddyshack. And that, right there, is a wholly originally character, and that’s what excites the dark overlords who fund this film. And me.”
It’s a great long interview and Reynolds’ responses are pretty funny. They also talk about how the film will likely not tie-in too much with X-Men Origins: Wolverine and they hit on many other topics relating to the film as well – Check it out at IGN (link at bottom).
To give you the latest and best info yet, Reynolds interviewed with MTV on Thursday and talked about getting his dream job and confirmed some things for the film what should get fans excited. What’s also awesome about the interview and what we’re hearing is that Fox is seemingly not overly controlling it (at least not yet) and they’ve given Reynolds, who’s a big fan of the comics, control and input over pretty much every aspect of the movie.
“I love it, because I get to be involved… And I’m such a huge fan of the character.”
“I get to be the authentication police, in a weird way… To their credit — the studio’s credit — they want to make an authentic ‘Deadpool’ movie; they want to make it as close to the source material as possible.”
Great news! In addition to that, Reynolds explained that the studio and him have agreed to some important points:
“He’s going to be the Merc with the Mouth, [we’re going to give] all those answers that everyone wants… He’s going to have the scarred-up face, he’s going to be in the suit — and, it’s going to be incredible.”
Currently, he and the studio are on the hunt for a director and writers and figuring out how to best tell the story. Reynolds said they’re thinking of ideas like using flashbacks to his pre-scar days or using flash-forwards to the present and of the discussions with the studio, they’re figuring out who the villains will be and what Deadpool will want to do in the story.
Things are definitely looking up for this film and it has the potential to help turn the franchise around.
What do you think about Reynolds’ passion for the character and do you think the Deadpool movie is something to look forward to?
