We recently learned that the Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning-starring indie biopic, The Runaways, was picked up for U.S. distribution by Apparition. The rights were secured by the company a month before it was due to appear at Sundance, a place where distributors usually go to look for films to pick up – the flick must have some hook to get a deal ahead of that.

Written and directed by music video director Floria Sigismondi (making her feature film debut), The Runaways is a biopic about Joan Jett (being played here by Twilight star Kristen Stewart), set during her time with her first successful band, The Runaways in the mid 1970s. It focuses on the relationship between Joan and Cherie Curie (being played by Dakota Fanning), the band’s lead singer. After them both starring in The Twilight Saga: New Moon together, it’s no wonder folks were interested in having them together in another film (read: Twilighters will see those two names together again and have instant interest in it).

We recently got our first official look (see below) at both Stewart and Fanning in their respective roles (after a lot of paparazzi pics), but now we have the first ever teaser trailer for The Runaways to give us a feel for the film. It’s not very long, but at least gives us a sense of the grungy atmosphere of the movie, something which it very much needed to tell this particular rock star’s story. Check out the trailer below, thanks to MTV:

I’m not overly familiar with the band The Runaways (I know a few of their songs, notably Cherry Bomb), so I’ll be someone going into this pic with a clean slate, so to speak. I bet Stewart will be glad to shed her Twilight image for a bit, dye and cut her hair, and just let loose as Joan Jett. And Fanning fits the role surprisingly well, too – she sure has grown up since War of the Worlds just 4 short years ago, hasn’t she?

Your thoughts on the first teaser for The Runaways? Do you like that Twilight star Kristen Stewart is branching out and taking on a role like this? Are you a fan of the band or, like me, will you be going in knowing little-to-nothing about them and Joan Jett?

The Runaways is set to be released in theaters on March 19th, 2010.
