Rumor: Phillippe & Knightley Cast in Captain America?

If the insane amount of rumors and speculation surrounding the casting process of the title character in The First Avenger: Captain America were not enough for you, now we have the supporting cast to talk about!

As we know now, Chris Evans was cast as Captain America, joining Hugo Weaving who was previously signed for the villain role of the Red Skull. For fans, the next questions regard who will fill out the supporting cast including Cap’s sidekick Bucky Barnes and his girlfriend Peggy. Could it be Ryan Phillippe and Keira Knightley respectively?

According to an obscure yet interesting report up on Bleeding Cool, someone eavesdropped on a phone conversation of a stranger on a bus in London (where Captain America will be shooting come June) and said something along the lines of being done on Green Zone and now working on Captain America where, and here’s the kicker, Phillippe and Knightley have been cast.

While the source of the information is questionable to say the least, the two names that were dropped are not surprising at all. Ryan Phillippe confirmed himself that he was going in to read for Captain America, although perhaps that wasn’t for the title role after all? Or, like we’ve seen in the past with Marvel Studios, he read for the part but they found he may be better for another character.

As for Keira Knightley, she was one of the three leading British actresses named to be in the running for the role of Peggy by a Deadline report at the time it was confirmed that Channing Tatum and Ryan Phillippe were in the running for the title role. The two others named in consideration for the part of Peggy were Alice Eve and Emily Blunt, the latter of which had the role of Black Widow in Iron Man 2 until she was contractually pulled away for Fox’s Gulliver’s Travels.

As with Kenneth Branagh’s Thor, the plan with Joe Johnston’s Captain America is to support the lead with a cast of recognizable actors and these two certainly fit the bill. It won’t be long now before we start hearing who Marvel Studios signs for these roles and others and if Phillippe does get to be Chris Evans’ sidekick, I guess the buzz about Robert Buckley was all for naught.

What I’m interested in is finding out who will be playing the Invaders and what those characters will look like in live-action. For those unfamiliar with them, they are an international team of heroes who Captain America joins to help combat Nazism during the second World War.

How do you feel about the idea of Ryan Phillippe playing Bucky and Keira Knightley playing Peggy?

The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.

  1. Very interesting indeed, well if they got anthony hopkins for Thor why not do the same for Cap? Also Rob it won't happen but how cool would it be to see Cap run into Wolverine while battling Nazis? Oh we can dream can't we lol

  2. I think Phillippe should be cast as captain america instead, mostly because Evans is already the Human Torch. both are equally good actors but i still dont want one actor to play 2 superheros in the same universe, even if they do never meet

  3. I kinda like that. I really have no idea who Phillipe is. But I like Kiera Knightley as Peggy.

  4. We're jumping the gun here on Phillipe, he absolutely bears no resemblance at all to Bucky and he's too old. Bucky is younger than Cap and Phillippe is either older or around the same age as Chris Evans. However,…..Ryan Phillippe does resemble Hank Pym and could possibly be in the “book end” parts of the movie as Hank Pym. All I know is he'd be 100% wrong for Bucky. And I don't want him to be Union Jack either, they aught to give that roll to a talented British actor with a sub-plot or Easter-egg lead into Captain Britain.

  5. How funny would that be if it was all just a rumor and Phillippe is actually Cap and Evans is really The Human Torch AGAIN.

  6. The Original Human Torch who years later becomes……..

  7. lol, I made the same comment back when they were starting the first Wolverine that Cap should appear in the WW2 scene.

  8. It's not the same universe.

  9. He may not resemble Bucky in a way, but I do see him as Winter Soldier later

  10. I am totally down for Chris Evans as Cap, but somthing i think is funny, is that one of the members of The Invaders is The Human Torch, granted hes an andriod. I think this character is where Johnny Storm get his name for his alter ego.

  12. i could see keira as possibly the female lead peggy carter if it doesnt go to alice eve/emily blunt who are also rumored to be up for the role. As for philippe i doubt they would hire him to be bucky and be much older then cap. if its any one who was a possible steve to be bucky i see it being vogel, stan, buckley.

  13. Just from a look sensibility point of view I have to agree with Ulik and moviefan. I can't envision Phillippe as Bucky at all. Knightley seems wrong for Betsy as well but I don't feel as strongly about that as the whole Bucky issue…

  14. Agreed i don't like the idea of Chris Evans as cap either, but there's nothing we can do about it,but we should have a good year of films come 2011.

  15. LOTS of Comic Book movies next year and possible two X-Men movies if Fox gets their way. (Wolvy 2 & First Class).

It's the year of the superhero

  16. I'm not crazy about the idea of Evans as Cap but I think he's a terrific actor , so I'll give him a shot. ( I thought Michael Keaton was going to be a terrible Batman and I was wrong about that , so bring it on Evans – lets see what you can do ).

Hey , can anyone tell me …… has Evan as Cap been officially confirmed yet by Marvel or Evans' people ??

have your people call my people , we'll discuss it over brunch.

  17. What about Phillippe as the original Human Torch? Is this a possibility?

  18. Union Jack?

  19. It is the same MARVEL universe. It's just not the same film studios.
