If the insane amount of rumors and speculation surrounding the casting process of the title character in The First Avenger: Captain America were not enough for you, now we have the supporting cast to talk about!

As we know now, Chris Evans was cast as Captain America, joining Hugo Weaving who was previously signed for the villain role of the Red Skull. For fans, the next questions regard who will fill out the supporting cast including Cap’s sidekick Bucky Barnes and his girlfriend Peggy. Could it be Ryan Phillippe and Keira Knightley respectively?

According to an obscure yet interesting report up on Bleeding Cool, someone eavesdropped on a phone conversation of a stranger on a bus in London (where Captain America will be shooting come June) and said something along the lines of being done on Green Zone and now working on Captain America where, and here’s the kicker, Phillippe and Knightley have been cast.

While the source of the information is questionable to say the least, the two names that were dropped are not surprising at all. Ryan Phillippe confirmed himself that he was going in to read for Captain America, although perhaps that wasn’t for the title role after all? Or, like we’ve seen in the past with Marvel Studios, he read for the part but they found he may be better for another character.

As for Keira Knightley, she was one of the three leading British actresses named to be in the running for the role of Peggy by a Deadline report at the time it was confirmed that Channing Tatum and Ryan Phillippe were in the running for the title role. The two others named in consideration for the part of Peggy were Alice Eve and Emily Blunt, the latter of which had the role of Black Widow in Iron Man 2 until she was contractually pulled away for Fox’s Gulliver’s Travels.

As with Kenneth Branagh’s Thor, the plan with Joe Johnston’s Captain America is to support the lead with a cast of recognizable actors and these two certainly fit the bill. It won’t be long now before we start hearing who Marvel Studios signs for these roles and others and if Phillippe does get to be Chris Evans’ sidekick, I guess the buzz about Robert Buckley was all for naught.

What I’m interested in is finding out who will be playing the Invaders and what those characters will look like in live-action. For those unfamiliar with them, they are an international team of heroes who Captain America joins to help combat Nazism during the second World War.

How do you feel about the idea of Ryan Phillippe playing Bucky and Keira Knightley playing Peggy?

The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.
