UPDATED: New Sources Suggest Supergirl is NOT in Man of Steel 2 <-- Click for the Latest Update.

A new rumor regarding Man of Steel 2 is currently making the rounds online, suggesting that Supergirl will be introduced to the DC Extended Universe via the sequel film. With much clamor regarding female superheroes making their way to movies (thanks to Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman) this particular speculation has fans excited for the possible team up of Kal-El and his cousin Kara on the big screen.

With the DCEU slowly expanding with the introduction of other main members of the Justice League, a lot of fans are still wondering when a sequel for the pioneering character of the franchise will have his sequel. The Henry Cavill-led project launched the shared cinematic universe for DC in 2013 and since then has appeared in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and is scheduled to reprise his role in the next two Justice League films. At this point, everything about the proposed Man of Steel 2 is unclear, without an attached director and even a target release date, but that does not mean that folks in Warners Bros. and DC could not be piecing the project together.

Speculation from an anonymous source who posted in 4chan.org claims that Man of Steel 2 is being discreetly developed simultaneously with other DCEU properties that have already been scheduled for release. Further, the tipster also said that the follow-up movie will be the entry point for Supergirl on the big screen:

Polarizing Films Man of Steel

"The sequel to Man of Steel has been developing in secret. Geoff Johns and Zack Snyder finished writing a story for the film back in November. Multiple writers were approached to turn into a screenplay including the writers from Watchmen and the 300 movie series. Brainiac will be the villain and Supergirl will be introduced to the DCEU."

By all means, this bit is only a rumor with DC and Warner Bros. unlikely to confirm or deny it in the near future given the slew of projects in the pipeline. But it is certainly an interesting notion to ponder, especially with the DCTV Universe already having its own version of Kara in The CW's Supergirlplayed by Melissa Benoist.

The Supergirl series has already been running for 2 tremendous seasons with its third one being geared up for bigger and better things with the addition of two new showrunners. At this point, fans have already attached Benoist to the character, which could make introducing another incantation of the superhero a little tricky. Then again, the show has also introduced its own version of Superman in its sophomore year played by Tyler Hoechlin, so its a good bet that viewers are well aware the separation between the two universes by now.

For now, this should be treated as extreme speculation, but we will keep an eye out for future developments regarding Man of Steel 2.
