Harrison Ford Joins Cowboys & Aliens (Updated)

[Update: Jon Favreau has confirmed it. Ford is in Cowboys & Aliens!]

Last week, Latino Review received word that Harrison Ford was “about to join a huge comic book movie to be directed by a director coming off a soon to be released huge comic book movie.” Logically, the writers at the site guessed the film in question is Jon Favreau’s upcoming Cowboys & Aliens since his Iron Man 2 hits theaters on May 7th. Sylvain White is the only other director that could possibly fit into this category; The Losers opens on April 24th and White has been attached to a film adaptation of Frank Miller’s Ronin comic for a while now. But I don’t think either The Losers or Ronin qualify as “huge” comic book movies, so I tend to agree with Latino Review’s assumption.

While Favreau hasn’t officially confirmed this little casting rumor as of yet, today he updated his Twitter account with the following: “Some very cool Cowboys & Aliens casting news coming soon…” Sure, you could argue that this could mean just about anything – but what fun is that? Latino Review has been a consistently impressive source for breaking news in this industry, so I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and trust their instincts on this one.

Cowboys & Aliens is written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Damon Lindelof, the same team that brought us J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek. Favreau is set to direct the project for DreamWorks and Universal. Daniel Craig will play Zeke Jackson, the cowboy hero who leads a group of gunslingers against invaders from another world. Olivia Wilde has also been confirmed; she’ll play a woman named Ella who joins forces with Zeke to help battle the aliens. And adding an interesting spin to the formulaic dynamic, the cowboys in the story must team up with the Native Americans to defeat their common enemy.

But what role would Harrison Ford play in this world? This film is based on a comic series by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, and since I haven’t had a chance to read it yet, I’ll leave it up to you to speculate until we receive some solid confirmation. If you have read the graphic novels, let us know which character you think would be a good fit for the iconic actor who has embodied two of the most famous personas in film history.

Update: This late-breaking tweet from Jon Favreau confirms that Harrison Ford is in Cowboys & Aliens:

Please stop asking if Harrison Ford is in Cowboys & Aliens. Okay? He is. Please don’t tell anybody.

Can’t really confirm it any better than that, folks icon smile Harrison Ford Joins Cowboys & Aliens (Updated) .

Cowboys & Aliens supposedly begins shooting in July (a quick turnaround for Favreau after Iron Man 2), and the film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 29th, 2011. What do you think about Harrison Ford’s potential involvement in this movie?

  1. If Harrison Ford is in it I'm gonna see it – otherwise, i've never read the comic so I probably wouldn't be interested. Guess i'll have to check it out!

  2. For some reason, I find myself quietly hoping he's one of the aliens. I don't believe I've ever seen Ford under heavy make-up. I know he's more likely to be made the priest, if sticking with the first issue, or even the Native American chief . . . but I quietly hope they give him the alien treatment. That would be so ridiculously different for him.

  3. the guy who finds the alien gun first.. or does he die early? he can be Dan's foil–or jester guy… the friend who always gets “in trouble” that needs help. Am I close?

  4. Please tell me they won't cast white actors in the Native American roles! Harrison Ford as the chief?!?!?!

  5. Daniel Craig as a cowboy? PLEASE. He's blonde. He can't be a cowboy.

  6. Great news

  7. Redford as Sundance?

  8. Hmm can anyone say Crystal Skulls part Deux? Perhaps Independence Day meets Bonanza…

  9. This is GREAT news! I'm putting this on my must-see list!

  10. I was just tossing out thoughts given what I've seen from the comic and how Ford looks. I just didn't find a lot of other older, grizzled-looking fellows in the story except for the chief. I'm still very much hoping he's an alien. :)

  11. Scared me for a second. I thought this was an article about Ford joining Scientology.
