UFC 193 was held last night at the Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia. The event drew over 56,000 fans to watch the fights, breaking the previous UFC live attendance record. Easily the most anticipated fight of the night was what many thought would be the latest in a long line of easy victories for champ Ronda Rousey. In a shocking twist of events the challenger, Holly Holm, pulled out a crushing victory.
The stage was set for yet another battle for the undefeated UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion. Rousey had experienced an impressive winning streak of 12 wins until last night’s fateful match. The 28-year-old champ went into her match with Holm brimming with confidence that her streak would continue. The also undefeated Holm is no slouch, with her own UFC fight record of 9-0-0. Ronda’s record will now dip to 12-1-0.
The fight lasted two rounds, the first of which began strong with Rousey, the normally dominant fighter, chasing Holm around the cage rather recklessly. The lack of focus by Rousey was certainly uncharacteristic and it served as foreshadowing for the jaw-dropping finish that was to come in round two.
The second round of the fight was brutal, as Holm riddled her with blow after blow to the face, giving Rousey a bloody nose that wouldn’t stop. She kept her arms low throughout the match and maintained her “Rowdy” style, even though it clearly wasn’t an effective tactic with Holm. Not long into the second round Holm delivered a crushing headkick knockout, followed by a few punches that ended the match and crowned Holm the newest UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion. There are a lot of fights that have disputed or controversial results that end up being debated heavily among sports fans, but this match was not one of those. The win was clean and on the level, elevating Holm a new top name in the sport.
Rousey was left in such a state that she wasn’t even able to attend the post-fight press conference. UFC President Dana White confirmed in a UFC video interview that Ronda’s condition was grim, revealing that, “Her lip was split in half in half right, so they had to sew it, took her and transported her.”
“Rowdy” Ronda Rousey was amped up for this match. In fact, their official weigh-in on the afternoon of Friday, November 13th was riddled with controversy, as Rousey attacked Holm physically and verbally, calling her out on having the facade of a good-girl act, due to her being a preacher’s daughter. Rousey shoved into Holm and went on a verbal tirade against her during the conference, which served only to amp up the anticipation for the huge title bout.
It is very likely that Rousey will be granted an immediate rematch with Holm and a chance to regain her championship title. White said the following at the post-fight press conference: “Obviously, we don’t make fights the night of the fight, but the rematch makes a lot of sense, I think the rematch is what people would want to see.”
