Rocko's Modern Life is coming back, in the form of an animated movie next year. While perhaps not the most popular among the well-remembered Nicktoons stable of the 1990s, Rocko's Modern Life was truly most of the unique programs ever broadcast on Nickelodeon. Similar to the more high-profile Ren & Stimpy Show, Rocko's made a name for itself partially on its ability to seemingly sneak very adult-oriented and raunchy jokes past the Nickelodeon censors. This led to a sizeable cult fanbase for the cartoon, which is now looked back on quite fondly by many.

For those too young to have watched the original run, Rocko's Modern Life was set in the fictional location of O-Town, and centered on the title character, a wallaby who emigrated to the U.S. from Australia. Surrounding Rocko as he tries his best to get through life unscathed are his faithful dog Spunky, and best friend Heffer, a steer with a good heart but a small brain. Rocko's had a fairly short run of 52 episodes on Nick, stretching from 1992 to 1996.

Now, over 20 years since the last episode of Rocko's Modern Life aired, TV Line reports that the series' original voice cast is set to reprise their roles for a reunion TV movie. Said movie will air in 2018, and starts with Rocko, Heffer, and the other principal cast members returning to Earth after having been stranded in space since 1996. Understandably, not all of the characters adjust all that well to the many stark differences between 1996 Earth life and current day Earth life.

The above premise is a pretty interesting way for a Rocko's reunion to go, as the idea of directly contrasting the life Rocko fans knew when they watched as kids with the current age of advanced technology residing in everyone's pockets could make for great comedic fodder. Of course, this being Rocko's Modern Life, things will probably get pretty weird, not that fans would want it any other way.

Rocko's Modern Life is the third Nicktoon to recently be given a new lease on life, with a Hey Arnold reunion movie set to hit screens this fall, and an Invader Zim reunion special in the works as well. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, and Nickelodeon clearly plans to mine it for all it's worth, when it comes to its old-school Nicktoon lineup.
