Reboots are as popular among television studios as they are among movie studios, as evidenced by Hawaii 5-0 starting this fall and Charlie’s Angels rumored to be getting a TV reboot as well. Even though a few rebooted shows have already failed – like Knight Rider and Bionic Woman – that hasn’t slowed NBC Studio Execs’ enthusiasm regarding a reboot for The Rockford Files.

The last we heard about The Rockford Files was that the Dermot Mulroney pilot co-starring Alan Tudyk and Beau Bridges had been cancelled after the suits at NBC watched it and thought “UGH!” (I’m paraphrasing). It would seem that even though the first attempt at rebooting the show failed, NBC is still high on making The Rockford Files happen.

Assuming Mulroney is now out of the question to play the lead of Jim Rockford (who ever thought he would be a good choice anyway?), one wonders who would be cool, cocky and have enough humor and swagger to fill the gumshoes’…shoes?

Rumor has it that the name being heard around the NBC water coolers is none other than “Sawyer” from Lost, Josh Holloway. As  Entertainment Weekly Michael Ausiello hears it:

…there are no serious talks going on at this time. Meanwhile, House exec producer David Shore—who is shepherding the reboot along with Steve Carell’s Carousel Prods and Peter Berg’s Film 44—concedes that Holloway is a “viable choice,” but adds that “it’s too premature” to start naming names.

David Shore also said:

NBC is still high on the project and they would like it to happen. Peter Berg’s involved producing and possibly directing and we will be looking for a new lead.

With his woman-pleasing good looks, ability to deliver sharp-witted dialog and not too shabby acting – Holloway is quickly becoming a hot commodity in Tinsel Town. At the beginning of summer, it was rumored Marvel was courting Holloway for a role in an upcoming superhero movie (though this was later denied).

I’m not big on rebooting shows, but if studios absolutely have to do it, then casting the proper people in the most iconic roles is a must. In this case, I don’t think they could go wrong with Holloway. I could see Holloway playing an extension of the original Jim Rockford as his son (after all, James Garner is still alive and well), who takes over his dad’s business.

NBC, I just gave you a great idea for a pilot, feel free to use it.

In order for a show like this to survive the reboot process, it has to be able to appease and draw in the original audience as well as entice younger viewers. Casting Holloway as Rockford’s son and including Garner as a secondary character would accomplish both those tasks. Of course if the writing and dialog stink, then this show has no hope for survival at all.

  1. My only problem with this idea is that The Rockford TV movies from a few years ago starring Garnerwere pretty terrible. of course, that wasnt his fault.
They were still pretty bad though.

  2. I always thought Bruce Campbell could pull off “Rockford”. Maybe they could bring James Garner back as his father, Rocky. I doubt he’d leave a sure thing like “Burn Notice” on a risky remake, though.

    • it would praticly ruin the sho to have garner as rocky or any other charactor on the show on a regular basis.

they would be trying to get someone accpted by the audiance as jim rockford and the original jim rockford is nearby reminding the audiance how great he was.

  3. Yeah this news was all the rage back at last years Rockford Files convention.

Gimme a break no body cares about this…

  4. The Rockford Files is universally known as one of the best private investigator shows ever to hit the airwaves. The thing is, James Garner’s personality was a huge part of that. As soon as they announced Dermott Mulroney, I knew it wouldn’t’ work. You need a guy women love, and men want to be, but without being James Bond-perfect. Rockford was just trying to get by with a sardonic attitude and world-weary demeanor. Dermott is okay, but he’s not that. Now Josh Holloway – he humanized a rather nasty con man. It wasn’t just the writing. Sawyers damage would have been cliche if not done to such perfection by Holloway, and he is the first-best choice for Rockford.

Oh, and the casting of Alan Tudyk as Dennis is a waste of his far-reaching talents. He’s is perfect for Angel. RECAST!

  5. Dermott Mulroney? Wow. Wow. NBC. Wow.

Cuz people can’t get enough of him?

  6. Josh Holloway needs to get back in the game..LOST is over…I actually liked the idea of his character from lost as a cop/conman in a spinoff-especially if its similar to Rockford..The dual identity dilemna would be interesting to see play out from episode to episode…Also the fact that he killed the original “Sawyer”,the repurcussions from that event could platy into his life as well..I think if NBC had any brains they would push this..most of the folks who loved LOST also loved Inception and the last STAR TREk so if they want a sure hit then thats the way to go..Also it leaves alot of room for guest stars from the original show…

  7. You know I don’t care who plays the “iconic” role of James Rockford, this films looking at a 30mil weekend (best case scenario.) Unless its a comedy starring Bruce Willis,,,
    ^
Give me a break Rowan, I watched the series in slow motion, real time.
The best part was the friggen opening with his (at the time high tech) answering machine starting off the show with that classic theme song. The rest was him and his older dad, bitching about how he needs to get laid.

    • 790 are you under the impression that this is going to be a film? I don’t think I said it was…NBC wants to make this a TV show not a movie.

  8. Bring it on!!!!! Garner is an acting god, Holloway is one in the making. He really could pull this off. I’ll follow this story. There may be hope for NBC after all.

  9. Josh Holloway would be absolutely perfect for this role!! Add Ken Leung, (Miles, from Lost) as his partner and this show would be a freaking hit!! Hey, NBC get in serious talks with Holloway & Leung!!!

  10. Kyle Chandler is perfect for Jim Rockford. PERFECT!!!!!
