Rock of Ages, the film adaptation of the popular Broadway musical, has attracted some impressive Hollywood talent. The movie, which tells a love story set to the music of Styx, Journey, and other 1980s rock staples, includes Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-JonesRussell Brand, and Alec Baldwin, among other Hollywood A-Listers.

Given the somewhat risky nature of modern movie musicals, why would so many big names join the film? I can't say for sure, but one good guess is that it's just a ton of fun. At least, it looks that way based on a recent set image from director Adam Shankman.

This morning, Shankman tweeted a picture of Russell Brand and Alex Baldwin on set and in costume as their characters Lonny Barnett and Dennis Dupree. For those unfamiliar with the characters, Lonny is the narrator of the musical and a close friend of Dennis, who owns the rock club The Bourbon Room. In the musical, the pair share a humorous duet of REO Speedwagon's "Can't Fight This Feeling."

Anyway, both Brand and Baldwin look good in their costumes (even though Brand doesn't really look different than he does in his everyday life). I get more of a late 1970s vibe from the picture than 1987, which is when the film is supposed to take place - but I'm no fashion historian.

With its star-studded cast and soundtrack of popular 1980s rock hits, Rock of Ages could be one of the surprise hits of 2012. As a fan of movie musicals, when done right, it'll be interesting to see how this popular Broadway show transitions to the big screen. It's definitely a tough task, which some films have handled better than others (Chicago, for example).

Do you want to see Rock of Ages? What do you think of Brand and Baldwin in their costumes? It's kind of hard for me to dissociate Alex Baldwin from his brilliant role on 30 Rock, but maybe Rock of Ages will change that.

Rock of Ages comes out almost exactly one year from now on June 1, 2012.
