Walking marble statue, business genius, and stupidly nice guy Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson cannot be stopped. Formerly the most electrifying man in sports entertainment, the builder of blockbusters continues to spark anything he puts his name to, and that includes the three films that he had set for release this year, alone.

Besides redirecting missiles in Fate of the Furious (because he can), Johnson also lent his talents to his upcoming big-screen adaptation of Baywatch, alongside Zac Efron, and is getting his game face on in the jungle alongside Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 star Karen Gillan in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

Some might be met with mixed reactions but there’s no doubt the Brahma Bull provides a golden seal of approval that very few actors can create. So besides the ones we’ve already seen, what else has The Rock got rolling into cinemas for the next few years? Glad you asked.

Here’s 15 Movies You Didn’t Know Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Will Star In Next.

15. Shazam (2019)

Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam and Armie Hammer as Shazam by Salman Artworks 15 Movies You Didnt Know The Rock Will Star In Next

DC fans know the story of schoolboy Billy Batson, who is blessed with the godly powers of transforming into The World’s Mightiest Mortal, Shazam! Johnson joined the ranks shortly after being given first dibs on taking either the titular hero, or his long-time foe and antihero Black Adam. The Rock chose to play the tortured fallen hero for a change.

While the idea of Johnson playing the film’s big bad with a glint of good is promising, there are still concerns for a project that’s been wrought with issues since its inception. Original Peter Segal said “so long” to Shazam! a while ago, and there’s also the concerning hiccup of no one stepping in yet to take the lead role; someone who can stand toe-to-toe with Johnson’s charisma and presence, and share the screen with the box-office behemoth.

Recently Johnson deemed Armie Hammer as a good choice for Shazam!, but The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Free Fire star has teased fans about taking up the Green Lantern, instead. Whoever gets the gig, we wish them the best of luck; whoever’s on the receiving end of a hit from The Rock better hit back just as hard.

14. Fighting With My Family (2018)

Produced by Johnson and directed by co-Office creator, Stephen Merchant, Fighting With My Family is based on the documentary of the same name that caught the Rock’s attention a while back and has become a passion project ever since. The film will tell the true story of the Bevis family, whose entire household have made a career for themselves as pro-wrestlers, with one that even has joined the ranks of WWE’s finest.

At the head of the table (right before he throws someone through it), sits Ian Bevis aka Ricky Knight (Nick Frost) and his wife Julia Hamer-Bevis, who goes by the stage name of Sweet Saraya (Lena Headey). There’s also their son Zak (A United Kingdom’s Jack Lowden) aka Zak Zodiac, and Saraya-Jade Bevis, who went onto achieve worldwide fame as WWE champ Paige (she’ll be played by Florence Pugh of The Falling).

Vince Vaughn has also joined the cast, and even Mr. Johnson confirmed that he’d be cameoing at some point, as well. He’ll also be on hand to lend his own wise words of wisdom alongside the real Bevis family, which should hopefully give the film an edge when this eclectic cast come to blows and body slams later this year.

13. Skyscraper (2018)

Hobbs Dwayne The Rock Johnson with gun The Fate of the Furious 15 Movies You Didnt Know The Rock Will Star In Next

Skyscraper is Johnson’s action-packed reunion with Central Intelligence director, Rawson Marshall Thurber. Johnson plays a war veteran and retired FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader, Will Ford, who now travels the world as a skyscraper security specialist, making sure that everything is running all tickety-boo, which it of course, it definitely won’t be.

During a visit to a newly constructed tower in China, the place goes up in flames and poor Ford has the crime pinned on him. From here’s it’s a fight to prove his innocence to the authorities, whilst the bad guys try stop him. To add even more hassle to the job, Ford also must consider the safety of his family, who are trapped inside the skyscraper that is only getting hotter.

It’s quite a shift from Thurber’s Central Intelligence and his previous comedic efforts, Dodgeball and We’re The Millers. Johnson taking on a towering inferno full of goons could lead to what may be his own Die Hard. Good. It’s been a while since Johnson took on the bad guys singlehandedly and this might fill the void. He’ll be going up to the top floor when Skyscraper hits cinemas July 18th, next year.

12. Rampage (2018)

Dwayne Johnson Naomie Harris and Jeffrey Dean Moran in Rampage 15 Movies You Didnt Know The Rock Will Star In Next

The Rock could lift the curse on video game adaptations with the help of Joe Manganiello, Naomie Harris, and an albino gorilla named George, in the big screen adaptation of Rampage.

The film will see Johnson as Primatologist Davis Okoye, whose gorilla pal, along with the rest of the unfortunate animals, falls prey to a scientific experiment that turns them into enlarged and enraged versions of themselves that tear across North America. Naturally, it’s up to our man to ensure that George can revert to his more chilled self before the government puts him down.

The Rock revealed a behind-the-scenes image of himself alongside Jason Wiles, the guy behind the gorilla thanks to the wonder of WETA Digital. Explaining that the two are going to have a strong bond that’ll be tested against the carnage, and that you’ll be able see all the emotions travel through George like you’ve come to expect from Peter Jackson’s coveted creature workshop.

“Joy, pain, sadness, love, aggression,” explained Johnson. “It’s insane when you get around this man and how he’s able to embody a gorilla.” We can only see if we go ape for this or not, when Rampage roars into screens April 20, 2018.

11. Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle (2017)

jumanji 2017 cast costumes 15 Movies You Didnt Know The Rock Will Star In Next

When it was announced that Jumanji was getting the reboot treatment, fear through ’90s kids across the internet. Thankfully, they regained some level of assurance when Johnson stepped in as the mysterious jungle game’s newest player. Joined by Karen Gillan, Jack Black, Nick Jonas, and Kevin Hart, image stills and The Rock’s insta feed suggest that we’re in for a very different take on the game that plays you.

Unlike the original Robin Williams-starring family gem, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle will see players taken to an overgrown nightmare through a video game, rather than that iconic Game Of Life (and Death) MacGuffin from the original film. It’s also confirmed that Johnson and co. will actually be the character’s avatars who decide to have a game and immediately regret it.

In truth, the plot is a risky deviation from the original, particularly as that movie even ended with potential new players coming across the game. We can only wait and see how this new squad of challengers handle the jazzed up version when Jumanji plays in cinemas this Christmas.

10. Big Trouble In Little China (TBD)

Big Trouble in Little China Dwayne Johnson 15 Movies You Didnt Know The Rock Will Star In Next

John Carpenter had delivered some fairly batshit films over the years, one in particular being Kurt Russell as a vest-wearing truck driver, Jack Burton, taking on ninjas and nefarious wizards in Chinatown. Somewhere in amongst the madness, Johnson decided to sign on to a Big Trouble In Little China remake. Announced back in 2015, The Rock confirmed that he was producing and starring in a brand new take on Carpenter’s 1986 classic. This was one of the few films in his pipeline met with a mixed reaction, from both fans and key members involved in the original.

Though The Rock assured fans that he sought Carpenter’s blessing, Carpenter stated that he had yet to talk to Johnson about the venture. As for the original Torrence, when Collider approached him about it, Kurt Russell nonchalantly stated, “nothing sacred, why not? I always think it’s interesting what’s gonna be done. Dwayne Johnson, I don’t know what his take on it is gonna be, I don’t know what they’re gonna do, I always look at those movies when I see a remake and it’s like, ‘okay…there’s gotta be a reason.’” Surely, he, of all people, should know that Jack Torrence doesn’t need a reason.

9. Black Adam (TBD)

Though his introduction may in be flying Shazam! into a building, there’s more to Black Adam than just pointy ears and a bad attitude. Following the recent announcement by the demigod himself, Johnson has revealed that the impending arrival of the DC antihero will also be followed by his own origin story to explain why he’s got such a massive chip on his shoulder, and how the hero became the villain, long before Billy Batson ever became Shazam!

Originally a hero in ancient times, Adam was gifted with the powers of the gods by a wizard to uphold justice and defend the helpless – definitely something suitable for Johnson and his usual modus operandi. This effort to fight the good fight quickly crumbles when his family is murdered and Adam abuses his gift. He takes his first steps on the journey that will eventually lead him to cross paths with Billy Batson centuries later.

Considering the somewhat spotty character development that DC heroes and villains have undertaken pre-Wonder Woman, Johnson’s solo gig might follow Diana Prince and actually get it right. The success could also make him a firm favourite to attend the DCEU for future films, as well.

8. Doc Savage (TBD)

Johnson is also putting his name to the one comic book character deemed by many – including Stan Lee – to be the first ever conceived. Bursting from the pages of 1930s and ’40s comic books, Doc Savage was a Herculean figure, trained by scientists since birth to be the perfect human being. It makes sense then, that Shane Black looked at the Brahma Bull and saw his Doc Savage.

Admittedly, Black had Chris Hemsworth as the first choice for Savage, but eventually settled on Johnson and began talks back in 2016. Explaining to Thrillist “I made a decision that Dwayne is the guy. I would to do Doc with Dwayne Johnson if we can make that work. It’s on the back burner while he’s busy.” Eventually the two had a chat and The Rock confirmed on Instagram that he would be taking the role of #TheWorld’sFirstSuperhero.

Currently there’s no confirmation as to when we’ll see the Doc, with Dwayne working on his DC stint and Black’s getting bloody again with The Predator. It’s somewhere down the line for sure, but it’ll no doubt be a great venture for the both of them when one of the sharpest script writers in Hollywood teams up with its most commercial star.

7. Journey 3: From The Earth To The Moon (TBD)

Brad Peyton and Dwayne Johnson on Journey 2 Mysterious Island set 15 Movies You Didnt Know The Rock Will Star In Next

Ensuring that his franchise-filling quota is met before he runs for office, Mr. The Rock has made sure not to abandon a film series that has helped steady his big screen career. Reuniting with director Brad Peyton (more on him later), Johnson will be set to reprise his role as code-breaking ex-Navy man Hank Parsons in not one, but two more Journey sequels, after his debut in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

In 2014, it was confirmed that Carey and Chad Hayes were writing the threequel before THR got word that Brad and Dwayne – aka The Bwayne Trust – would “take the project in a different direction than what had been in development before.”

Of all the films on Johnson’s to-do list, following on from a previous effort, these ones seem to have the least bit of attention, for now. It makes sense considering that key factors like Josh Hutcherson, who no doubt has been sitting pretty since The Hunger Games ended, has yet to confirm if he’ll be back for more fantastical globe-trotting action – that is of course, if they even stay on this planet. The Mysterious Island ended with Hutcherson’s character eyeing the moon for his next destination – after that, who knows?

6. Jungle Cruise (TBD)

jungle cruise disney movie 15 Movies You Didnt Know The Rock Will Star In Next

The Rock will take his first tour down the river on Disney’s Jungle Cruise. Based on the Disneyland theme park ride, the attraction saw visitors take a steady journey down the river only to encounter an array of wildlife including, lions, elephants and some rather aggressive hippos. Thankfully, the ship is steadied by the tour guide who knows how to handle such dangers and converse with the local tribesmen.

The Cruise has taken a long time battling with getting the engine going as far back as 2007, when originally Toy Story stars Tom Hanks and Tim Allen were set to share the screen. That plan fizzled out and Johnson took their place before eventually signing up (yet again) as a producer for the film, which be in the vein of The African Queen.

So far there’s been no confirmation of anyone else messing about on the river but Johnson has expressed his interest in Wonder Woman‘s Patty Jenkins, climbing aboard as director. Meanwhile The Rock has already insta’d a few shots of him joining the Cruise with Disneyland visitors for a few laps, so at least he’s doing his research.

5. San Andreas 2 (TBD)

san andreas dwayne johnson 15 Movies You Didnt Know The Rock Will Star In Next

The Rock’s San Andreas was a guilty pleasure of a blockbuster that gained enough interest (and ticket sales) to warrant a sequel. Johnson once again joins with director Brad Peyton to take on Mother Nature and try to find how many different occasions he can shout, “Hang on!” in a single film, with San Andreas 2.

The last movie saw Johnson as rescue helicopter pilot, Raymond Gaines, taking on the elements in an effort to save his family from danger and survive this earth-shattering nightmare. It’s safe to bet more of the same with both onscreen wife and daughter, Carla Gugino and Alexandra Daddario, though there’s no confirmation of if it’ll be an earthquake again.

If Paul Giamatti returns as weather wizard and predictor of certain peril, he could forecast The Rock taking on a volcano, a Day After Tomorrow style freeze, or perhaps a fine drizzle. With only a few tremors being picked up in terms of production, there’s currently no confirmed release dates but we can predict it somewhere high on Johnson’s list considering the dynamo results delivered from himself and his favorite director.

4. The Janson Directive (TBD)

Hobbs Dwayne The Rock Johnson Fate of the Furious 15 Movies You Didnt Know The Rock Will Star In Next

When it comes to The Rock in action movies, he’s often used realism like a punching bag. It’s undeniably entertaining, sure – but how would he handle himself in a world created by the man that gave us Jason Bourne? That’s the question posed for whenever he takes on The Janson Directive, a project based on another book from author Robert Ludlum.

When he gets round to playing the role, Johnson will star as Paul Janson, an ex-Navy SEAL and former member of a very shady government group, who is roped into rescuing a billionaire who’s recently been taken hostage. Janson agrees to the gig only for everything to go sideways and our hero finding a target on his back placed there by the U.S government.

This adaptation is being handled by Matt Damon’s franchise holders Universal, at the moment, with Akiva Goldsman penning a script. As for other members of the Janson Directive, neither a director or additional cast members have been mentioned, considering the early stage the project is in.

3. Baywatch 2 (TBD)

Dwayne The Rock Johnson Baywatch 15 Movies You Didnt Know The Rock Will Star In Next

It might not have been met with the best reception, but there’s no doubt that Johnson’s fans rolled out to see him crack wise alongside Zac Efron in the big screen adaptation of Baywatch. The Pebble to Johnson’s Rock, the two had a fairly decent chemistry and while a few jokes didn’t ride the comedic wave as well as others, the film’s leading man is still keen to return for a sequel. Even before its release, talk was stirring that we’d see the gang back in action thanks to some interesting titbits from producer, Beau Flynn, who is just waiting for the go-ahead to go back in the water.

Flynn revealed that “We have an amazing story already. We’re bringing back Shannon and Swift who wrote on the first one, and I know Dwayne would be in, I know Zac and all the girls would be. We just have this really cool idea to put them in this whole new world. We would take it overseas.”

2. Fast & Furious 9 (TBD)

Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto and Dwayne Johnson as Hobbs in Fast and Furious 5 15 Movies You Didnt Know The Rock Will Star In Next

He promised that Daddy would stay home, but as long as there’s tarmac to tear alongside Vin Diesel and co., chances are that one of Johnson’s most iconic characters, Luke Hobbs, will be back in action for the inevitable Fast & Furious 9. Even with the so-called rift that had been drawn between its two biggest stars, it was reported in April that both Johnson and Diesel had met on various occasions to fist bump and make up. The only uncertainty is just how much screen time the two will share in the next lap.

It’s worth noting that so far, the two haven’t been at the forefront of the action together, but mainly on opposite sides, or (in the case of Hobbs in Furious 7) out of the game for most of it. This time could finally see the team being led by both Dom and Hobbs as they plan a heist that could bring in even more than the billion-dollar installment they delivered this year.

All that, and there’s still talk of finally giving Hobbs a spin-off that would no doubt draw just as much attention – with a little help from a frenemy, of course.

1. Hobbs & Shaw Spin-Off (TBD)

Hobbs and Shaw Fate of the Furious 15 Movies You Didnt Know The Rock Will Star In Next

Besides steering us even further into blockbuster carnage, with the monster hit that was the latest Fast & Furious chapter, one highlight was seeing the bitter banter that grew between Johnson’s Hobbs and former Toretto target, Owen Shaw, played by Jason Statham. The two worked wonderfully together for the brief time they shared on screen, chipping away at each other and sparking a chemistry that even Johnson and Diesel have yet to match. This made the news of the two potentially starring in a spin-off film together all the more appealing.

It was reported after the release of Fate of the Furious that plans were already beginning to form over the idea of putting Hobbs and Shaw in a film together and see which one can punch the most henchman without breaking a sweat. It’d be the first test vehicle of what Universal plan to be a series of spin-off films, and this would make for a certainly great start.

For any other cast member in the Toretto crew, it could be risky business, but considering the massive fan base that both Statham and Johnson have separately, sticking them back-to-back against bad guys is a match made in action-packed heaven.
