Two buzzed-about sci-fi projects coming soon from Sony/Columbia – the RoboCop remake/reboot and Elysium from filmmaker Neil Blomkamp (District 9) – have each been pushed back several months from their previously-set release dates.

In addition, the studios have bumped up the 3D animated followup to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which appears to have abandoned its original title Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers (in favor of the more generic, but easily identified, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2).

Acclaimed Brazilian filmmaker José Padilha (Elite Squad) is overseeing RoboCop‘s makeover for the 21st century, with a cast populated by rising stars Joel Kinnaman (The Killing, Safe House) and Abbie Cornish (Sucker Punch, Seven Psychopaths) - as well as big-name players like Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson and lauded character actors such as Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), Michael Kenneth Williams (Boardwalk Empire), Jennifer Ehle (Contagion), and Michael Keaton. Filming is ongoing on the remake, with leaked set photos revealing the titular character’s ‘updated’ cybernetic design.

Sony/Columbia has pulled RoboCop from next year’s competitive summer season, in favor of a release beginning on February 7th, 2014 (where it will open against the Need for Speed video game adaptation starring Aaron Paul). The move might have been motivated by concerns over the viability of the RoboCop brand name, seeing how the property has traditionally had cult (rather than mainstream) appeal. Then again, negative buzz in response to an early script draft and claims of creative control issues might’ve also contributed to the decision.

Elysium, on the other hand, is an anticipated sci-fi project (without the remake stigma) that boasts an impressive cast lineup featuring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley (District 9), and Alice Braga (Predators). Hence, studio heads have decided Blomkamp’s sophomore directorial effort is a better (re: more bankable) fit for RoboCop‘s original August 9th launch date next year. The film will now open against the comedy We’re the Millers, rather than Oldboy director Park Chan-wook’s Stoker on March 1st.

The ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ sequel arrives next year

Lastly, since RoboCop has taken Cloudy 2‘s prior date, the latter has been moved forward to a September 27th, 2013 release date. The computer-animated toon will serve as counter-programming to a pair of action-thrillers, in the forms of Runner Runner (with Justin Timberlake) and The Tomb, teaming Arnold Schwarzenegger with Sylvester Stallone. Moreover, Sony/Columbia is looking to replicate the box office success of its similar buoyant 3D animated flick Hotel Transylvania (which opened on September 28th last month).

So, in summation: Elysium will release on August 9th, 2013, followed by Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 on September 27th. RoboCop hits theaters the year thereafter on February 7th.

  1. well, it’s poop

  2. February is the month of poop movies.

  3. I hope they use that time to minimize the scenes with that rubber looking suit of his and focus on the other ones (which I hope look better than that).
In any case I hope it’s at least better than RoboCop 2, and it just HAS to be better than the awful part 3.

  4. So what I’m hearing is…I can see new Die Hard next Valentine’s Day and Robocop the year after. My wife is going to love that!

    • Professor P. Let me know if you find a good Divorce Lawyer, I may need them.

  5. it does not look that bad when you compare it side by side, but lack of silver really brings it down, in original while they where building him some girl said that they can save his arm, but bob said to cut it of, in this version they decided to keep it…

  6. just a bit more silver, wouldn´t be bad. i love the new design and it has so much simillarities and details to the original armor.

  7. February is the dead zone for movies, yikes!! Not looking good.

  8. there you see it, a great movie like -dredd- failed at the box office, because of the negative reactions. maybe hollywood should change his marketing tactics and should show less trailers or just one trailer without spoiling scenes and they should hold a movie secret and introduce it 2 months before it comes to cinema.

  9. Yes for cloudy 2! The first one is hilarious.

  10. So the Robocop reboot is released on my birthday? Cool I guess even if the suit looks crap.

    • would it look cooler, if it were like the old one with 80s shoulderpolster-armour and silver, put some silver on the parts were it belongs and it is the same suit, just in black and shaped up. you must see the new pics, but it think you won´t like it,too. i love the desihn so much, that i really can´t understand it. oh – sandy- i dis asked you a question and last week i was on your site , where -jersey schindler- did made your journalist work down, and defended you. at first, thank you that you don´t answer my question, and next time if someone attacks you and critisize your work, then i won´t be on your site.

  11. Wait I have to wait even longer to see elysium now? NOOOOOOooOoo… oh wait now its basically a summer movie now. YAY!

  12. Don’t really care about Cloudy or Robocop, but I was really excited for Elysium! District 9 was great, Matt Damon is awesome, and the concept sounds great. I love original sci-fi movies (LOOPER!!), especially amidst all of the remakes/reboots/sequels that have taken over Hollywood, so I was excited for this. Oh well, I’ll have to wait a few more months.

  13. thanks for disrespect, no answer is an answer, too. that was my last comment to that.

    • I’m not quite sure what you’re getting at. You feel disrespected because Sandy hasn’t answered you? People can be busy, especially sites such as this. Not really understanding your behaviour there.

As for your response to my comment, in my defense of my opinion, if this wasn’t Robocop I wouldn’t mind because it’s a cool looking suit but because the first movie was such a loved movie for me growing up, it just doesn’t have that “feel” for me.

Commando is one of my favourite movies of all time and the plot could easily be adapted once a decade as a brand new movie (and probably has been already, after all, Commando 2 became Die Hard when Schwarzenegger said no to coming back for the sequel) but that would still mean that a movie named Commando and with the exact plot wouldn’t go down well with me due to my fondness for the original.

That’s how I feel about Robocop.

Even if the main character’s look was the greatest thing ever and won me over (which it just might do), the only other issue would be that I think Clarence Boddicker is the greatest movie villain of all time and nobody could ever top it.

      • yeah i know what you mean, but everytime if someone asks -sandy- a question, you see that she answers to all after 2 minutes. so, i know how hard people work, you mustn´t teach me and i didn´t critized her work, eitherways defended her. you must go back to last week and read how direspectless -jersey schneider- against her was. so, if i see that a screenrant reporter answeers questions after 2 minutes for everybody, and i get no answer or get an answer after 1 week. no, problem,i´ve just added it because it´s direspectless.

        • Awkward… Sandy’s a guy. Click on his name at the top of the page, and you get a bio.

        • I don’t think that Sandy answers everybody’s questions. I’m sure plenty go unanswered, and I would think that the ones that are answered are because he was checking the comments at that time.
Online writers can be quite busy and don’t always have time to check comments, so if your question/comment doesn’t get answered promptly, I’m guessing it probably won’t. You shouldn’t be offended by it.

        • Maybe you might consider taking an “English As A Second Language” course – or use a better translation program…
          …and I don’t mean to be disrepectless.

          • listen, bigmt, i´m getting sometimes overheated. so, don´t jerk with me,alright. i don´t know who you are but you are not funny, and you are making me angry. go to france and try to speak your language, they will show you the middle-finger. for the reason that i was never in your country, i think i speak and write better then other foreigners. i would be proud if a foreign person would try to learn my language, but otherways the english language is uninteressting. nearly the whole world speaks your language. i think my knowings are enough to make some comments, but don´t put me in a discussion.

    • My apologies, no disrespect intended, I was just behind today on comments.

Anyway, yeah, I know there are a lot more RoboCop set photos out there than what we’ve posted, but there are also a lot which we just cannot post directly on the site (for copyright reasons).

      • i know, but you can link to that site, like screenrant do it with other articles before, too. but, let´s forget the pics, they are now some days old.

  14. By lookin at the two Robocop costumes. Meh to the latter one. You can tell it’s a guy in costume while Peter Weller in the first two films looked believiable. I can say the reboot can’t be any worse than the Prime Directive films. The only person that comes to mind that could take Kurtwood Smith’s Boddicker’s character if they used the character would be Quentin Taratino.

    • I agree. The earlier RoboCop actually looks like a robot/cyborg and intimidating.
The new one just looks like a futuristic cop/soldier and definitely human.

  15. That sucks.I was really looking forward to Elysium since the first day it was announced which was about two years ago n now I gotta wait another year
