Collider recently spoke with director Robert Rodriguez, as well as his regular cast member Danny Trejo, on the set of Predators, where they were asked about the different projects Rodriguez has in the pipeline. The main ones talked about were the two of most interest to fans right now - Sin City 2 and Machete. But if you’re interested, there’s also some stuff in there about another Spy Kids movie.

Sin City 2

With the amount of vagueness (“It’s happening… maybe… at some point!”) surrounding the much-anticipated Sin City 2, it’s almost gotten to the point where no matter what Rodriguez or anyone else says, it’s hard to believe it’s ever going to happen. Despite that, earlier this year we reported that Sin City 2 was moving forward, with Rodriguez apparently having spoke with “key players” involved. We even got a “semi-confirmation” from exec producer, Stephen L’Heureux, that the project would go into production in the second half of 2010.

Now that appears to (vaguely) still be the case, as Rodriguez told Collider they’re still talking about doing Sin City 2 as early as next year, but he said he’s not “gotten into that yet.” It’s still on Rodriguez’s radar, but things certainly don’t sound as concrete as a confirmation of filming we got wind of some months ago:

“I can’t say no because I don’t know its no. I know Frank (Miller) wants to do it I know I wanna do it and its always sort of time permitting kind of thing but its not like I can tell you definitely we’re starting… its not my next picture… I know that. Doesn’t mean that its not the picture right after because that’s still a possibility.”

He revealed that there’s actually been a script for Sin City 2 written since 2007 (obviously an early draft), one that would maybe need some things revised now that it’s two years later, but that they wouldn’t be that drastic or hard to do:

“Well it’s the one that Frank wrote and we have to look at it now and go is this really the one… I think its built up so much, like are we really going to satisfy everybody with what we have, should we add to it. It’s the thing we’ve always talked about but now two years later going on three we’d probably make some adjustments but nothing that would take a long time. It’s just a matter of… once we start… we can go into production… we can already start and in pre production for this up to anything we wanted to.”

Lastly on the Sin City 2 front, Rodriguez said that the script already written has some original stuff in it (read: not in Frank Miller’s original graphic novels), basically to, “catch yourself up with some character.” I’m guessing he means going from Sin City in 2005 to Sin City 2 at least 5 years later, there would maybe be some “filler” needed that the graphic novels didn’t have, to make it work for the sequel (read: things that work on the printed page may not translate that well to the big-screen).

I’m hopeful that Rodriguez will make Sin City 2 a priority over other projects, as I think it’s safe to say it’s the project most people want to see get made out of all those that the director has on his slate. Like I said, it seems like it’s a project that will forever remain “pending,” but we can always hope it gets fast-tracked.

Machete

We have an update from both Rodriguez and Dany Trejo about the upcoming Machete movie, which is a full-length version of the awesome fake trailer that appeared in Grindhouse. Whilst on set of Predators, Rodriguez and Trejo spoke to Collider about Machete, and had some interesting things to say about it:

Rodrigeuz says Machete is in the editing stages right now, and while that’s happening he’s writing some of the score for it (for those of you who don’t know, Rodriguez writes the music for most of his movies). Rodriguez also talked about the possibility of a franchise being made of the Machete character, revealing that he and star Trejo have been talking about the character since 1994.

The names for potential sequels – Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again – were originally mentioned jokingly when the trailer in Grindhouse was being made, but Rodriguez said it could be fun to keep those titles if a trilogy were to be made.

Trejo talked about the look of Machete, saying it definitely is the same as the look of the original trailer i.e. the scratchy “old” look of the grindhouse movie it’s parodying/paying homage to – “Yes Grindhouse. I love that. Get a bag of popcorn and just sit and watch and you go back to the 1960s.”

The cast for Machete was revealed back in August and “awesome” doesn’t even begin to cover it – Robert De Niro, Steven Seagal, Jessica Alba (remember, she was good in Sin City icon smile Robert Rodriguez Update: Sin City 2, Machete & More ), Michelle Rodriguez, Cheech Marin, Jeff Fahey (Frank from Lost), Don Johnson and Lindsay Lohan (okay, maybe that bit isn’t as awesome as the rest icon razz Robert Rodriguez Update: Sin City 2, Machete & More ).

Trejo talked to Collider about working with the cast, particularly the legend that is Robert De Niro (who Trejo starred alongside in Heat):

“When I first saw Robert De Niro on the set, he came up and his first words to me were, “Don’t leave me like this, homes.” You know, that was my line in Heat. And I kind of laughed and he said, “Man, Danny, I’m really proud of you. You’re the lead. This is it, this is you.” And I looked him right in the eyes and I said, “Can I get you some coffee, Mr. De Niro?” [Laughter] You know, cause that’s the guy. I couldn’t believe that Robert got De Niro. And then Jessica Alba, you know? And Lindsay Lohan. And Michelle Rodriguez, and Jeff Fahey, and Steven Seagal, and Cheech Marin. It just goes on and on. It was really hard like not just giggling, you know? I mean, when you’re working, just not giggling. You know, come on, grow up. But it was amazing, and that cast was amazing.”

Lastly Trejo hinted at the same thing Rodriguez did – that there may very well be two more Machete movies after the first one – and Trejo also mentioned the titles Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again. Personally, I’d be all for a franchise being made out of the character, as long as they can keep the “joke” fresh and not just rehash each movie two times over (having said that, wasn’t that what most grindhouse movies were?).

Spy Kids

To finish off, here’s a little update from Rodriguez on another Spy Kids movie (yay! icon razz Robert Rodriguez Update: Sin City 2, Machete & More ): He says he’s turned in a script for another Spy Kids, but revealed it’s some sort of reboot. He says it’s different kids this time (not the original pair, who are too old now, I think), and that he may do it sometime next year in March or April. He also said for ideas for another movie, he went back to his first draft of the first Spy Kids and took some ideas that he wasn’t able to fit into that one.

For the rest of the interview(s) with both Rodriguez and Trejo, you can head over to Collider. I highly recommend you do, as they talk about such other things as what type of projects Rodriguez would want to do in the future (apart from those mentioned above); Rodriguez elaborates on the Spy Kids franchise; and Trejo gives more of an idea of what we can expect from Machete. You can read the interviews at Collider HERE and HERE.

Thoughts on all that has been said by Rodriguez and Trejo about Sin City 2, Machete and Spy Kids? Which of those projects are you most anticipating? We’d love to hear your thoughts.

There’s no word on when Sin City 2, another Spy Kids or Machete will hit theaters, although for the latter Trejo says he thinks it’s coming out in April next year. Stay tuned to Screen Rant for release date news on all of these projects.

  1. Another Rodriguez “update”, another “nothing really is happening”. Until i see a trailer, i don’t believe it.

  2. So true… I am a big Rodriguez fan but lets face it, SC2 has been post-poned too many times.

But like they said Machete is in the editing process so we will get one definite trailer… We will have to wait and see for the other two… but knowing the way he works, Rodriguez does not leave these types of projects, they will just have to find a good time and unfortunately make us wait longer, but I bet it will be worth it nonetheless!

and Tarantino should special guest direct again, I loved his collaboration, even if it was for a few minutes I feel it put something different to Sin City, from a result of perfect chemistry between the two!

    Long live QT qnd RR

  3. I cannot wait for Machete. I’ve always been a big Sin City fan, but at this point I’m tired of waiting. The cast is getting old (which is a big problem seeing as a majority of the story takes place before the first one) and I’d much rather see Miller make another Sin City comic.

  4. A dang REBOOT for SK? Come on! I know Daryl, Alexa, Emily, Matt and Taylor are too old but still, i want a new Sk movie with the ORIGINAL CAST!
